man informs ns that the Degrees on Mr. Daniel
Lesesne's plantation, in Christ Church Pariah,
are cutting down tho wood and bringing it to
. Charleston by the boat load two or three times
. a week.
BOUND OVER TO KEEP THE PEACE.-An alter
*> . cation occurred between two parties yesterday I
in Meeting-street, wbioh resulted in a pistol
and knife being drawn, and finally the taking
out of warrant aid cross-warrant, and each
Dinding the other to keep the peace.
THE BAPTIST F ALB_The ladies were busily
.engaged yesterday afternoon iu arranging tho
-wreaths and decorations for the ball, and
whilst they have beon somewhat delayed in ar?
rangements, they will, no doubt, be in timo for
the opening Monday evening.
REPORTED DISORDERLY SOLDIER.-Report
having reached the Citadel yesterday that ono
. of the privates of the garrison was on a "ben
-der" in the vicinity of the guardhouse, a Bquad
-of soldiers was sent down to arrest him; but it
turned oat that the rumor was unfounded.
REMOVAL.-Messrs. Sayas & Merinas, having
.removed from their old stand in Market-street
to No. 80 Market-street, two doors from Meet?
ing, where they are fixed up in elegant style,
are prepared as ever to supply their customers
with the beat cigars, snuff and tobacco to be
found in this city. They offer a good Havana
.cigar forton cents.
GRAND ORATORIO AT ST. PAUL'S CHURCH.
Io mentioning the grand oratorio, noticed in
yesterday's paper as about to come off shortly,
it should have been said that it would be tba
third of a series of oratorios wbich ara being
given at St. Paul's Church, instead of saying
that it would be a repetition of St. Patrick's
oratorio.
UTILIZING THE BBOEEN ASPHALTUIL-On re?
newing the pavement in Cuniberlard-street.
00 which tho asphaltnm coating had been
originally laid, it was supposed at first that
? tho broken parts taken np would be unservic
able; bat it proved otherwise; and Mr. Habe
nicht manipulated it so successfully that he
hopes to make a considerable innovation on
the old patent.
WANTED, A FATHER AND MOTHES.-Somo J
time ago an infant was found in the streets, I
and was sent to the City Hospital, where it bas
received the kindest attention. Il is now
somewhat grown, being three months old; has
fine tea tares, and is toll of life. It is desired
that some one should adopt it while it is
yoong and its affections yet to be won. Ap?
plications of a respectable character will bo
entertained at the hospital.
FEINTING rx COLOBS AND GOLD.-This ait
has been brought to groat peifection, and
some of the work in this line done by Messrs.
Walker, Evans & Cogswell, of this city, cannot
be excelled by the oldest printing houses at
the North. They have recently printed a busi?
ness card for Messrs. R. Mure & Co.'s steam?
ship line, which is a very handsome specimen
of printing in two colors; and the gold and
colored lettering for tho wrappers of thoir
?. packager of lotter paper is in the highest
style of the art.
ACCIDENT AT BELVTDEBE-FALL or A BUILD?
ING.-Yesterday morning, at Belvidere Farm,
-on Cooper River, the frame work of a building,
which was being erected foi the manufacture
of phosphates, fell in, and injured several of
the workmen. One of the men, a colored man
named Hamlet Campbell, was struck across
the head by a falling rafter, and was knocked
senseless, in which condition he continued up
to a late hour last evening. Another mon had
his arm badly injured. Both these men were
carried to the City Hospital in a cart, but only
Campbell was so badly hurt as to compel bim
to remain there.
SUNDAY SCHOOL CELEBRATION.-We invite
attention to tho advertisement ot the anniver?
sary celebration of the Methodist Sunday
School Union, to be held at Bethel Church,
to-morrow afternoon. An address is to be de?
livered by the Rev. John T. Wightman, and
several of the Sunday School scholars will also
apeak. The singing will be conducted by the
.children, and good music may therefore be
.expected."
Those interested in the cause of Sunday
Schools-and what Giristian'or philanthropist
is not-are invited to attend. The exercises
will commence at three o'clock.
CAMDEN.-From our attentive correspondent
in Camden, who kindly endeavors to suDply
the place of tho Journal, we obtain the follow?
ing items of intelligence :
The surveyors of the Chatham Railroad are
within ten miles of Camden.
The Town Council have been installe 1 in their
positions, and have established a small bat
-officient police organization.
A protest has been forwarded to the Attor?
ney-General against the sufficiency of the se
?curity of tho bond of the coanty clerk.
B. F. Whittomoro, ii. C., is negotiating for
thc purchase of a house in Cam len.
TBOUPE OF CAMELS AND A WAR CHARIOT.
The illustrious showman, Dan Castello, will
enter Charleston, December 9, mounted on a
magnificent gilded Eastern war chariot drawn
by eight sacred camels. He will be followed
by his entire caravan of wild animals, includ?
ing six African hons, unde- the special charge
of Herr Langel; a royal Bengal tiger and two
cubs, a camcleopard, an elephant, a gyaschu
tas and other beasts too numerous to men?
tion, and also his monster circus troupe, con?
sisting of fifty performers, one hundred trained
horses, two CIOWDS. one jackass, three p.-nies,
and a striped mole, the whole forming the
most wonderful collection of wild animals that
ever celebrated the ninth of December in the
streets of Charleston. On arriving in the city
Dan Castello will drive at once to thc Artesian
well, where the sacred camels will perform
the celebrated feat of taking in a three days
supply of waler at one time, two extra pipes
being furnished to the well, and Castello pav?
ing half the expense of the new tronghs. He
will then march through all the streets, big
and little, arriving at the Citadel Green jost in
time for the night's performance^ which will
fcurpaea everything before seen in Charleston.
SoBoEBY rs Si. P_XI_P-8TE__.T.-The resi?
dence of T. W. Johnson, Esq., in S*. Philip
street, north of Rado'iffe, was entered yester?
day morning before day, and robV d of cloth?
ing, china, and some valuables. The entrance
was effected by forcing tho shutter in the rear
of the house.
THE CRIB AT BETHLBH-M.-It is tho inten?
tion of the Sisters at the Academy of Our Lady
of Mercy, Queon-strect, lo pot up another alle?
gorical representation of this scene, so ten?
derly described ?T Sacred 'Writ. They com?
menced yesterday the incipient arrangements,
and will endeavor this season to make the em?
bodiment of the ideal as good as the one of
last year, and indeed somewhat better. We
have no doubt that it will provo highly success?
ful, and create as great an interest as the
former one, which was visited by upwards of
two thousand persons, who ackn .wledgod. in
unequivocal terms, its decided merits.
THE THEATRE-LAST PEKFOBMANCE.-An?
other full house last evening s'iowcd that Gil?
bert's troupe did not suffer by acquaintance.
The more the people of Churleston know them
the better they seem to lite them. ' Ten
Nights in a Barroom" was received with im?
mense applause, and little Kate Gilbert, as the
Drunkard's Daughter, made quite a reputation
for herself-not only as an embryo actrens, but
as a voca'ist of unusual sweeiness and power.
This was the last peiformance of the troupe
in Charleston, and they left during the night
on thc City Point for Savannah, ibo samo
manager, Mr. Gilbert, will probably introduce
on the Charleston boards, in January, Stra
kosch's first-class Italian Opera Troupe.
FREE FIGHT TN A NEWSPAPER OFFICE.-Every
morning before daylight, about fifty newsboys,
white and black, collect in the courtyard of the
buildings of THE DAILY NEWS to purchase their
twenty-five cents, fifty cents, or dollar's worth
of papers, according to the abundance of their
fractional currency. The papers are delivered
to them open, and while they are folding them
for convenience of carriage, they exercise their
juvenile talents in stealing papers from each
other. Detection always leads to fighting, and
yesterday morning tho row was general. One
unfortunate little blackamoor was fallon upon
by two others, who knocked him down and cut
bim over the head with their knives, and would
almost certainly have killed bim if it had not
been for tbe timely interference of tho mailing
clerks._
GRAND MOVE ON THE TAPIS.-Tho enter?
prising and energetic firm of McLoy & Rice
will, in a few days, movo to tho commodious
establishment on the corner of King and Hnsel
streets, within a ?tep of their present too
limited location. The repairs that arc b .un g
perfected in the new quarters by Messrs.
Sawner & Ferguson will be both unique and
capacious. This move on the part of this first
class dry goods house has been necessitated
by the increasing demands of an already large
trade, which will no doubt considerably in?
crease under the new covering and their
characteristic energy. This house bas the
credit, and very deservedly so, of keeping
within a range of moderate prices that bavo
brought them a healthy and increasing
business.
THE WIDOW'S HOME-H?MOBS OF RECON?
STRUCTION.-James P. Cow?rdiu, Esq., will re?
peat his inimitable lecture on the "Humors of
Reconstruction" at the South Carolina Ball to?
night, foi- the benefit of the Widow's nome.
The lecture is the most attractive and enter
tai ning that tbe people of Charleston have had
the good fortune to listen to for a longtime,
and the'Widow's Home is deservedly the pct
charity of the city. Mr. Cowardin not ouly
had every opportunity of becoming thoroughly
ac quamtod with his subject, but he had tho
g enius to perceive DIB advantages and to im?
prove them, and ho has the enviable talont of
communicating to his hearers not only his idea
of the ridiculous, but bis appreciation of it also.
His account of the Virginia Reconstruction
Convention is an admirable comedy in which one
versatile performer acts all the parts. A dozen
good actors in a good farce often fail to pro?
duce half the laughter which breaks forth ir
resi stibly during the recital of Mr. Cowardin*s
lecture.
Of the Widow's Home, so much is known
that little can be said. Tho care of tho widowB
and orphans of our Confederate dead is a
sacred duty, which has been well performed by
the supporters of this noble institution. Mr.
Cowardin has shown his appreciation of the
value and merit of this charity by the offer of
bis services. Let the people of Charleston
show their appreciation and approval of hi?
generosity by turning out C7i masse to hear
him.
BUSI_V__SS NOTICES.
THE HOME GTMNASIUH.-Mr. Von Santen,
ameng the many hand.-omc ai tides in his es?
tablishment suitable for Christmas presents,
has none more worthy thc attention of parents
and guardians of children than tho Home
Gymnasium.
The apparatus is supported by two strong
screw-books in tho 'ceiling, about cightem
inches apart, and screwed five inches into thc
joist. It can also bo used out of doors by
erecting a framework such as is used for
swines. The straps are of the strongest
lmen, handsomely colored. Tho rings are of
thc patent bent wood, about nine inches in di?
ameter. By an ingenious device, tho rings
and stirrups can be instantly raised or lowered
to any desired height, or tho stirrup straps re?
moved, or the rings removed for the insertion
of the trapeze bar. The apparatus can bc put
up in any room and removed in a moment,
leaving only the two email eyes in the ceiling
visible. It can be used in different rooms at
pleasure, b/ having extra sets of hooks for the
ceiling. A space six or eight feet wile is
ample for any of the exercises.
0. E. & A. S. JOHNSON.-One of the oldest
and most reliable clothing houses in tho city
is the concern whose names heads this notice.
Their establishment has been in existence up?
wards of twenty-six years, during which it has
sustained a high reputation for bapincss dis?
patch, and tho admirable get up of all articles
they select from first class sources, or manu?
facture themselves. They have always on
hand an elegant stock of gent's, youth's and j
freedmen's clothing, and are now offering a
fall and winter stock of goods well worthy the j
attention of purchasers. This house ci ve 3
employment to a number of respectable
females, whose circumstances have been
changed by the late war, and this should in?
duce a liberal patronage in their behalf, for by
so doing indirect assistance is rendered to
those who are so worthy consideration.

son, at the Temple of Fashion, No. 269 King
Btreet, has just received a fresh invoice of
this stylish hat, which he introduced into oi*r
city some six weeks ago with greal success.
SxYjarrr-aoHT.-By that sign we live; yes, and
let Uve. You will never be cheated at ?Seventy
eight, however thick your understanding may
be. Your understanding may be thickened,
but you will bo benefitted thereby. True, it is
a den of Lyons, but you may enter it with bare
feet. This is ridiculous, but the cheapness of
"78" is J/urray-culous. See advertisement
of "78."

NEW AND FASHIONABLE MDLLINEBT.-Mrs.
M. J. Zernow keeps one of the most attractive
millinery stores on King-street. New, sub?
stantial, beautiful and fashionable goods adorn
her windows and grace her shelves, and the
work done in her establishment is the very
best. Her prices, both for work and material,
arc moderato aud reaso .able.
