CHARLESTON THURSDAY MORNING. NOVEMBER 12, Our Defeat. Our reasonable hopes and expects have not been realized, and the fute v we most dreaded has befallen our bel city. Wo do not desire to speculate i the causes of our defeat. Wo do not d to underrate the difficulties and dar which now beset our path. But in midst of the gloom there is this glea brightness, that our people have I roused from their apathy and have wai to the necessity of fighting boldly and sistently against a rule of ignorance shame. This, at least, is something, it be the beginning of the end. Sadly and mournfully do we now tur the contemplation of the future, thant our people in the name of Charleston their noble industry and energy, thank them for the fire and zeal with which t espoused our common cause, and urg them to remember that their manhood still their own, ttud that il is resolved our heart of hearts that we never will Bpi'ir. One Duty. There is one duty which wo must i neglect iu our defeat, any more than would have neglected it had fortune crow: our labors with success. It may not in our power now to reward fully th who with us have borne the heat and bt den of the dreadful days now past, but is due to the colored mcu who, with courage and sagacity beyond that of th? race, voted for the Citizens' candidat* that they should receive frcm us that pi tection which from the civil authoriti they are too often unable to ob'.aia. At the elections of Tuesday hundreds worthy and industrious colored men vot for Lesesne. Many of them did this open and without concealment, and some of (he number were beaten and hissed, and escap death but by hasty flight. One at lea faced his assailants with a coolness whii could not be surpassed, and ho has Bini been chased through the streets of Charle Lon by a howling, hooting mob who thirstt for his blood. These things must not be. Wc mu; stand by the colored men who have stoe by us. If the law cannot or will not prc tcct (hem the citizens must do it; for would be a reproach and a shame upon ot awn good uame if Ihe colored men wfa tiave been and aro our friends should t injured and abused, and wc not be read to save them from harm, or at least to shar their danger. The election held yesterday will be con? tested on the grounds that persons enti? tled to vote were prevented from voting by intimidation, threat and actual force : that persons not en?tled to vote were per? mitted to vote ; th it ballots about to bc deposited were taken from voters by force and fraud, and other ballots substituted for them, and that there were, in conduct? ing the election, such manifest irregulari? ties and illegal and fraudulent conduct as make it irregular, illegal and void. ?
