Charleston for three yeats to come is at last
over, though tho result has not yet been de?
clared. For months past there has been
more or less excitement ia the city in regard
to this municipal contest; but during rhe hst
ten days it was rapidly intensified. Yesterday,
the result of reqietration having justified the
previous showing of THE NEWS that there was
a chance of success lor theptrty of law and
order, the excitement was deop and universal,
und although the white people restrained
themselves with commendable self control
.from any violent outburst of feeling, interest
.and determination were evinced ia every look
.and gesture. Men of property and responsi?
bility, colored a3 well as white, exerted them
.selves with indefatigable energy throughout
the day to secure the election of a city ad
.ministration which could be trusted with their
interests, and about seven o'clock ta the eve?
ning the gratifying impression grew very gene?
ral that ibo Hon. H. D. Lt-sesne had been
electol by ai least 200 majority, together with
a large proportion of the Aldermen on his
?ticket. This was no wild conjecture, but based
on facts and probabilities, as iollows : The
=total registration showed a colored majority of j
C?O. The voting yesterday, by actual count,
?showed that 717 cf those registered had not
.voted. O: tacso non-voters it is fair to pre?
suma that at least four-fifths were colored
tmen. This would reduce the colored majority
to a mere trills, less than a hundred, leaving
the Citizens' Party nothing to contend against
but such white \'Otes as might be cast for
Pillsbury. Ihe30 may fa rly be considered to

.the independent colored men, consisting most?
ly of the former'Tree persons of color,'-' who

ia made up from tho returns of managers who
kept the run of the vote as weh as it was pqs:

estimate every imaginable doubt was con?
strued in favor of Mr. Pdlsbury. The ticket
for Alderman was so "scratched,"'changed aud
varied by particular individuals to suit their
own notions, that it is impossible to make
. any estimate as to the Aldermen elect.

THE ELECTION EXCITEMENT.

Thc raia yesterday morning somewhat I
damped the ardor or' tue patriotic citizens,
black anet white, who hal trono to be.l the
night before wich the detertninaticn of votin.tr
the very first thing iu the morning, bludgeons,
brickbats and empty stomach to the contrary
notwithstanding. Nevertheless there was ti
goodly crowd who defi:d the elements, and
about the tune that most people were well
fortified with their morning's meal, there
w.ro to be seen at the different precincts
lo: g strings of white and black voters,
with their pantaloons roiled up and um?
brellas over their heals, waiting patiently,
or impatiently as the ease might be, in the
rain for their turn to denosit their ballots. As
a general iule the white men after casting
their votes went about their ordinary business,
but a large number of negroes continued to
hang around the polls. In rtie ?ist part of
the day while there was a lars ) number cf
white men at the polls things were conducted
with tolerable fairness, but when the white
men chop red oa, the Radical negroes became
insolent, and every colored norm who voted for
Lesesne wa9 put in terror of his Hie. Their
votes were often snatched out of theil hands,
and they were hooted away from thc polls with
cries of "Kill him! club lum! beat him!
knock bini down ! follow hun ! burn down
his house!" &e.: A-e. The so-called
special constables, so far from trying to put a
atop to these proceedings, very vfcen took part
in them, and throughout tho day acted
practically as a working committee ol the
Pillsbury party clothed with the sanction of
official authority. Notwitlutanding these and
many similar provocations, the white people
kept their temper, and it is owing to their good
sause and admirable seli-commana that the
city was not involved m a serious riot. It
must not be supposed, how.ver, that the ordi?
nary calm of the city was uninterrupted dur?
ing the whole day. On thc contrary, there
were some disturbances.
EXCITEMENT IX WARD NO. III.
A colored mau at Piecinct 3, Ward No. 3, ac?
cidentally discharged his pisto!. The shot
aroused the already excited" crowd and ho was
badly beaten, though it was soon ascertained
that no one had been shot.
A little later a colored mau voted th? Lest sue
ticket, and was immediately sci upon by s^rne
black and white Radicals. The affrighted ne?
gro ian down the bay and sought protection
from some gentlemen iu a carriage. Tb Ls was
accorded, but tho horde of freedmen com?
menced an indiscriminate assault with th:ir
clubs, and beat the negro badly. During the
melee a shot was fired, the bullet cutting the
vest of Mr. T. J. Mackey, but doint; no dam?
age. Tho carnage party succeeded in effecting
their escape, and the crowd returned to
the polls. An angry controvcisy then arose,
and the negroes taking offence at sonic
remarks mads by a Mr. Rook, rushed at
him, and he ran down East Bay. In his
flight he drew his pistol, and to intimi?
date his pursuers, fired in the ground.
Thia shot, however, only increased the irrita?
tion, and Mr. Rook was compelled to take
refuge in the Johnson's Row of buildings,
whero he succeeded iu eluding lr.s pursuers.
The negroes were ail armed with clubs, som j
of them formidable weapons, with loaded heads.
They were very turbulent aad riotous ia their
behavior, aud collected in crowds around
Bennett's Mil!, breathing veu^cauco against
Rook, and threatening to kiil him when found.
THE SPECIAL CONSTABLES.
Sheriff Mackey appointed a number of colored
deputies yesterday, who were distinguished by
white aud green badges, and were designed :o
act as peace officers. They were seldom seen
near the polls, but marched throog'a tho
streets and along tho wharves dragooning the
frecdmeu and compelling them to vote the
Pillsbury ticket. They wore ali armed with
clubs, and were very rule and boisterous iu
their behavior. Ia several instances they
anatched tho tickets from colored voters and
tore the Liisesae ballots to pieces, substituting
the green ticket of Pillsbury. Instead ol hoing
peace officers they proved to be an clemant of
discord, and, by their unnecessary aod illegal
officiousness, caused most of the disturbances
that occurred yesterday.
"CONSCIENCE MAKES COWAEDS OF Vi ALL."
Ono duty of the special deputy sheriffs and
poace conatn^s was to allay the fears ot the
ambitious Gilbert, sud they wera organized as
a body guard to keep watch and ward around
bia domicile on Monday night, and prevent
any K. K. K.'s from interrupting his peaceful
slumbers. The v liant guard screwed their
courage to the staking j oint, and quailed not
while the champion of the Radical party chewed
the cud of reflection, and enjoyed tho plea?
sures of tho Mayoralty in his dreams. Thc
guard remaine 1 at their posts until daylight,
when they were relieved for other duties.
SEIZING AND CH NGTNG VOTES.
At Ward No. 2, some officious intermcddlers
rendered themselves very obnoxious by stop?
ping tho colored voters and asking thom tor
their tickets. When these were for Lesesne,
they were instantly destroy ed amt the P ll^bury
ticket substituted. A number ol' unsophisti?
cated freedmen lost their votes m this way, and
the fow white men who were present were de?
terred by intimidation from interfering.
A M .tr. L'S NEST DICOVE:;LT>.
/" Some of the peace depucy sheriffs, in their
anxioty to servo their country, discoveied a
mare's nost. They reported to thc Sherm's
office that several colored voters wc: e held in
durance vile at Bennett's Miil and elsewhere,
and prevented from exorcism:: the right of suf?
frage. A habeas eorjy? wsa procured, and
Sheriff Mackoy, armed with this document,
made a descent upon the mil'., bu:, to the aston?
ishment and di.^'iust o:' the Sheriff, iiie so-call?
ed captives., twenty-five ia number, positively
refused to leave or to adm:: tlitit their freedom
was in aiy way curtailed.
A FIT EMELEM.
Some of thc colored PiUsburyites who were
under tho voting age, tim us od themselves by
parading through the principal business streets
behind a leader, who bore aloft a bundie and
a carpet-bag. They were very noisy a d disa?
greeable, and obstructed thc -sidewalks.
LET VS HAVE PEACE.
A horse that was frightened by the crowd at
thc corner of Broad and Meeting streets, yes?
terday, fell down and i commotion ensued.
Some ol' the "peace officers" took to the tree
boxes and implored those persons who were
trying to raise the horse to keep the peace. It
is needless to stale that iu this solitary instance
they succeeded i:i accomplishing their desired
ead.
SELLING PLACES l.V THE QUEUES.
Thc different polling precincts were crowded
at aa early hour, and tuc voter ? formed ina
long lino waiting patiently for their turn to de?
posit their ballots. The colored voters were
largely in the majority, and, being early on
the ground, Ind secured the best places. Their
anxiety to vote carly was uot proot against the
chance of tut tiing aa honest penny, and their
places in the v.tu of the queu were sold co the
leo? fortunato for twenty-five or fifty cents, ac?
cording to the hurry of thc parcha??T. The
seller would drop back to the ead, aa J, ai lie
worked up, sell out agata.
THE OUAEDS OF THE E.VLLOT-BOX.
The ballot-boxej of the different precincts
were dosed and sealed yesterday evening and
taken to the Upper and Lower Guardhouses lor
safety. Twelve boxes were taken to thc Cap?
tain's room bi the Lower Guardhouse, and
those of Ward No. 8 and the Second Precinct
o?' Ward No. G taken to the Upper. They
wore guarded by the Democratic and Republi?
can managers, who remained with their
charges during the night to see that they were
not tampered with.

COUNTING THE VOTES TO-DAT_According
to law. the votes will be counted in public, at
the City Hall, to-day. It is to be hoped that
the established practice of counting the Mayor's
vote Sr?t may be followed, as otherwise it
may be midnight before the result is definitely
ascertained.
