The Protestant Episcopal Triennial
Convention.
In the Episcopal General Convention, on
Monday, tho tommittee on Canons reported
against the amendment to Canon 12, title 2, to
the effect that a member of a church removing
from one parish to another should still be
amenable to the jurisdiction and subject to the
pastoral care of the parish to which he should
remove. The committee were of opinion that
a member of a church was distinct from a
communicant, and was not subject to canoni?
cal discipline. After some debate the commit?
tee were discharged from the farther conside?
ration of the Bubject.
Rev. Dr. Haight submitted a report from tho
same committee in relatk n to the duties of
lay readers, placing them under proper disci
pibe, Ac. The committee hold that lay read?
ers are the creatures of the bishops, and could
be removed at their pleasxiro. Discharge from
farther consideration of the subject was asked
and granted.
The same conrse was adopted with refer?
ence to a report from the Committee on the
Prayer Book, in regard to these words in the
communion office: ' that He may dwell in them,
and they in Him." The committee held it in?
expedient to make any change.
The Committee on Prayer Book reported
that tho stereotype plates of the prayer book,
which were formerly in the possession of Har?
per Brothers. Lad been sold, and then: where?
abouts could not be discovered. They also
stated, Mr. James Pottp, the publisher of reli?
gious works, in this city, had a set of plates,
which be was willing to sell.
They offered a resolution appointing a spe?
cial committee, consisting of the Bev. Ben?
jamin J. Haight, D. D., of New York; Bev.
Thomas L. Colt, D. D., LL. D., of New York,
and Bev. M. A. D. Howe, D. D., of Pennsyl?
vania, to negotiate for their purchase and core
for their safety. The resolution was adopted.
The Bev. Dr. Richard 8. Mason, of North
Carolina, from the Committee on the Prayer
Book, reported that, in their opinion, the alleg?
ed grammatical error in the Prayer Book is
unworthy of notice, and they asked to be dis?
charged from a farther consideration of the
matter. They were discharged.
An animated debate followed on a resolution
offered by Mr. Tazewell Taylor, of Virginia,
"That it is inexpedient to make any alterations
in the Book of Common Prayer." The resolu?
tion was finally made the order of the day for
Wednesday.
The question as to an increase of the Epis?
copate, by the election of assistant bishops, en
- gaged the time of the Convention down to the
adjournment. The prevailing sentiment seem?
ed to be that additional assistant bishop? were
absolutely necessary. Judgo Conyngham, of
Pennsylvania, and Judge Otis, of Illinois, spoke
in favor, and Bb v. Dr. Adams, of Wisconsin,
and others, against.
