MORE BBAN-NEW MAGISTRATES.-Governor .Scott has recently appointed a number of new magistrates, six of whom received their com? missions yesterday. Several of the managers of elections also appeared and qualified. BASE BALL.-A match game of base bail, .played yesterday evening at the west end of .Broad-street, between the Atlantic and Oceola Clubs (colored), resulted: Atlantic, 22; Ocoola, io. t RECOVEBT OF STOLEN PROPERTY.- The vigi? lant detectives have recovereJ a large number of articles that have been recently taken from different houses. Two colored funerals that were passing at the time added to the throng, and Calhouu-street was the liveliest place in the city. THE TURNVEREINS.-This social club of Ger? mans gave another popular entertainment last night, et their hall, in the lower part of King -Btreet. The performances were agreeably varied with tho drama and tho dance, and twinkling feet kept time to the music until a late hour._ NEW PAVEMENT.-The city authorities have ?t last taken in hand the wretched pavement that has so long disgraced the sidewalk on the south side ol Wentworth street, between King and St. Philip streets, and it is to be hoped . that very shortly that public thoroughfare will .be passable, even at night. "MAJOR ANDERSON, OF FORT STOTER."-The Northern papers are discussing the propriety of a public token of gratitude for the services of General Robert Anderson, of Fort Sumter. It is stated that the General has an invalid wife, who lost all her own means during the wax, and two young children, whose education must be provided for; and his salar}- is his only resource. His health is broken by long ser -7ice in the army. : PILLSBURY AND THE MAYORALTY.-It was a current rumor on the street yesterday that an offer had been made to Pillsbury by Senator ~8Awyer to use his influence for him ;n obtain? ing the United States Internal Revenue Collec - t sr ship, provided he would withdraw from the contest for the Mayoralty in favor of another -candidate. Some say that Pillsbury bas ac? cepted the offer, and others that he has de? clined, thinking that a bird in the Ir? nd wt s "worth two in the bush. HOTEL ARRIVALS, October IS.-Charleston Hotel-A. CIRCUS.-John Robinson's great original, in? tellectual and entertaining show is bound for this promised land, and the handwriting .on the wall tells of thc wonders that will eoon be niado public. The huge posters -stuck up ia Meeting-street yesterday were sur? rounded by admiring crowds of darkies, who feasted their eyes with the wonderful birds -and beasts depicted thereon. This show is iepresented as being a big thing on sawdust, -and the best equipped in every particular that has ever visited Charleston. Certainly no - other circus or menagerie ever had a Tartary Valpus, or any other Valpus that we everheard of, and we very much fear that Mr. Robinson's '.Tartary Valpus may turnout to be a Gyaschu . tus under a new name. TRUCK FARMER'S CONVENTION.-A conven? tion of all persons interested in shipping fruits -and vegetables to New York will assemble at -Stone Mountain,. Ga., to-morrow. Noticing -this movement, the Allanta Intelligencer says : Not only have asnculturahsts, but all other intereste, languished for the last three years. . If the farmer carries his produce to Atlanta, Augusta, cr any other Southern market, he . receives unremunerative prices for it. The country is daily growing leaner and leaner. Something must be d:ne to remedy this evil. We must carry our produce to markets where capital is abundant, and cultivate that charac? ter of products that the wants of that market demand. This will give employment to the railroad and steamer, and biing 'money to the - exhausted pockets of our farmers. Then all interests will feel its beneficial effects. Wo hope that our commission merchants and railroad and shippins agents will be re? presented in this convention. SALE OF AN OLD BUSINESS STAND.-Every one interested in the welfare of Charleston will regret to learn that the old finn of Hastie, Cal? houn & Co. are about to close their business, - and leave vacant the important place which they have filled for many year3 iu the mercantile community of thjs city. This house was estab? lished in 1815 D.v the Hon. William Wright, . United States senator from New Jersev, and has been in operation every since. The firm has been a very successful one. and in thc course of its history several members have re? tired with comfortable fortunes. The large stock of hardware and saddlery offered for sale at cost affords an excellent opportunity for country merchants to invest with prospects ol a handsome profit;' and the new iron front store in Hayne-stroet, together with the ware? house, opening on Market-street, is one of the best business stands in the whole city. RANDOLPH.-The murder of this Reput leader created quite an excitement yest* among the colored people, many ot wlion lected at the street coiners and discusse* event in all its bearings. There were, ever, no outbreaks of violence, and one nt quaintcd with the act might not bavo sus ed that any laing unusual had occurrec' was at first supposed that tho body woul brought to chis city, and preparations made for aieception; but the more mod advised against any display that would tei increase* the excitement. The passengei yesterday's train reported ?hat Randolph to bo buried at Columbia yesterday. No was obtained to the murderers. THB THEATHE-BENEFIT OF ALICE VA: The play of Fanchon, or the Cricket, dr crowded house last night. This was pro! owiug to ttvo causes-it was the benefit ol popular and versatile Alice, and it was known how admirably she sustaiued the of Fanchon. Though this play is of um length, the interest was uuflacging, ant each appearance the fair Alice was gre with rounds of applause. The pit bas ! generally assigned to the c'aqun's, but thc ing was so true and perfect that the ci house partook of tbe furore, and she was r ly smothered with hoquets. The characti Fanchon, a wild, impulsive girl, is one p liarly suited to Miss Vane, and the plav sh be repeated before the close of the seasoi it is evidently a hit. DIRECT COMMUNICATION WITH EUROPE. advertisement appears in our columns morning, giving full particulars of the lin steamships already noticed between this and Liverpool.
