CTBCTOSES.-Quite a number of circuses, each
promising to exhibit the moat impossible feats
ever performed under canvas, are now making
their fall tour through tbe South, foremost
arning them is John Robinson's renowned
.show, which wo are told has been refitted and
. reorganized upon a most grand and gorgeous
scale. It will reach Charleston in a few weeks.
RADICAL CHAMPIONS.-The Radices an?
nounce that their party will be represented at
ih3 debate in Christ Church Parish, on the
17th inst., by C. C. Bowen, Rev. R. H. Cain,
and D. H. Chamberlain. They also announce
that Senator Wilson, of Massachusetts, and
Ex-Governor Hawley, of Connecticut, wdl be
amone their campaign speakers for this month
in Sonth Carolina.
TiBBAPLNS.-Tho supply of terrapins in this
. City ia so abundant at present that they can be
. bought readily at ono dollar per dozen, and
when bought by tho hundred they can be had
for one or two cents each. Terrapins are sell?
ing in Washington at $23 per dozen, and ns
they can be readily carried alive from Charles?
ton to Washington, they would seem to offer a
fivorablo opportunity for successful specula?

CLEBK OF THE COUST OF COMMON PLEAS AND
. G ES EBAL SESSIONS.-Mr. Brownfield, Clerk of
the Court of Common Pleas and General Ses?
sions, yesterday made a formal surrender of
his office to A. C. Richmond, to whom it was
awarded by Colouol Willard, sitting as Judge
in Chambers, on a writ of quo warrante. The
receipts of the office since September 5, tho
day on which the claim was first made, were
included in th9?^urrender.
RECOVERY OF STOLEN GOODS.-Lieutenant
Hendricks, the Chief of the detectivo force, bas
be-n recontly engaged in the investigation of
sundry larcenies tint have taken place in the
-city. A number of old offenders-released jail
birds-have boon captured and a qumtity of
the stolen property recovered. He has now in
his offico varions articles of clothing, jewelry,
silverware, ftc., that have been traced to the
thieves, who will now be enabled to renew their
. acquai ilanco with the jail.
THE ELECTIOS NEWS.-There was a groit ruBh
yesterday for THE DMXV NEWS containing ta?
bular and comparative statements of the re?
sult of tho election in Pennsylvania, Ohio and
Indiana. Tue general impression was one of
.gloomy foreboding, andevery man condoled with
his neighbor on tho general misfortune. Some
keen Democrats, however, obtained consolation
for their disappointment by berting on the
Oily of Philadelphia, which, notwithstanding
the beasts of sanguino Radicals, wont decidedly
Democratic. One Democrat alone won fivo
hnudrrd dollars, which he hal distributed in
small bets on the result of the Philadelphia
?election.
BLACKFISH PBESEBVED.-Dr. Sim, a North?
ern man who has settled in this State sinco the
war, has invented an antiseptic lor the preser?
vation of meats, which on trial has proved
.quito successful. It was tri;d as an experi?
ment on somo mutton, whiebjwas eaten twelve
.days afterwards with great relish and without
. suspicion, by gentlemen supposed to be judges
in 6uch matters. Dr. Sim proposes to apply
lois antiseptic in au improved form to the pre?
servation of blackfish, which caa be caught ia
great abundance off the coast of this State. It
is supposed that the supply of blackfish here
is equal to that of tho salmon or thc codfish,
. and that when preserved as proposed they will
form aa important article of export.

THEATRE-ALICE VANE AS CAHILLS.-Miss
Alice Yn.ne, in ber personation, last evening,
of toe character of La Dam J aux Camillas, fairly
took a very crowded house by stoiui. lt was
difficult to detect the vein of false seutinieut
whuh runs through thia mest famous of
French melodramas, in the prcseuc: of so del?
icate a perception, so exquisite a tact in the
reudition of tho varying shades ol character
and feeling which maleo tho artistic imperson?
ation of Camille at once .so seductive and diffi?
cult a task. That the bouse warmly appre?
ciated the truth and beauty of tbe brilliant
young actress' conception was abundantly
manifest from their rapturous and continued
applause. The play of Caniil lo has a more
sustained tone than most of tho stock
dramas of tho modern stage. There ia less
ol that sadden transition which ia thc
great resource of mediocre artistic talent, and
which seldom fails to attract applause from
audiences less tliacriminating than impulsive.
Rut this only makes the role of the inrpers-ma
tor the more difficult, and renders thc present
triumph of Miss Vane more remarkable.
"Camille" is certainly net best conception, and
she deserves a hearty "well don." from all
lovers of delicate and artistic acting.
To-night the play will be Don Camr de lta
zan, once a very popular play in Charleston'
but which has not been performed here for
many years._
BOBBE s Y o? THE SOUTH CABOLXXA RAILBOAD.
On Tuesday night both the South Carolina
Railroad up trains were robbed. Tho Colum?
bia train left the city at the usual hour, but
when near Rose Hill, thirty-seven miles from
Charleston, the engine commenced Blipping,
and the train was delayed several minutes.
During this time som* persons unknown broke
into one of the freight cara by cutting through
the door pancel with an axe, and several bar?
rels of fish, a crate of crockery, and a bartel
ot sugar were thrown out w.tbeut dcloction at
the time. When the train resumed its mo?
mentum the conductor chanced to look out,
and observing the merchandise stopped tue
train and recovered the gi eater pat t. The
thieves were evidently disappointed at this
contrelenxps, and laid iu wait nntd the Augusta
train arrived, about two hours later. The
train slipped as before, and tho same scene
was enacted. The car was broken open, and
several boxes of cheese and other merchandize
taken therefrom. This robbery was not dis?
covered until th? cars arrived at Reeve's Sta?
tion, fifty-two miles from tho city, and it waa
then too late to return. Information of tho
robberies was sent to the city, and on the next
day a large part of the stolen goods was found
concealed in the woods, though no clue was
obtained that would lead to the airest of thc
robbers. It was found that the rails bad been
greased with slush, and the delay caused ena?
bled the thieve* to break open the cars.
BASE BALL-A CHALLENGE.-Tho return of
fall, and especially the near approach of win?
ter, has caused quite an excitement in base
ball circle?. Bate are lively and bolts aro tight,
while the rise in balls is marked. The opening
of the season by the Forest City and tho Alerts
has given an impetus to the game in this State
which will piobably make it more popular than
could have been imagined. Thc following let?

Sou the score of a game of ''muffins," plaved
y the Cosmopolitan Base Ball Club ot this
place. The ?fame was played Friday afternoon
on the green in front of the library building.
The ground is a good ono and ?. good ordei.
The day waa cool and pleasant. Thc players
began to assemble by 3 o'clock and thc gamo
commenced at lnlf-past 3. Messrs. Wright
aud Wallaoe wero chosen captaius, and tho
game wis opened by Wright tilting the bat.
Six innings were played, when tho game waa
called on account of the darkness, tho score
standing Wright ten to Wallace nine.
I he batting was moat of it very good nud
several fine "fly catcher" wore made. The
cause of the small score was the good fielding
rather than poor battiue. Below I send the
