IMPORTANT TO TAX-PAYERS.- The City Trea? surer is now receiving the third installment of the annual tax, and those who wish to save their credit should walk up to the office and settle at once. BEAL ESTATE SALE.-L Y. Westervelt ?fc Co. sold last week, at private sale, a farm of fifty acres, known as the "Cottage," located in St. James' Goose Creek Parish, on the Northeast? ern Railroad, about seventeen miles from Charleston, for $500 cash. THE AMERICAN BOOKSELLER AND PUBLISHER. The October number of this valuable magazine has reached ns. A PERSONAL RENCONTRE.-A personal ren? contre took place yesterday evening on the :Summerville train, between tbe South Carolina Railroad depot and the city limits. The trou? ble arose out of a business transaction between Mr. R. D. Taylor, of this city, and Mr. Lime house. of Summerville, in which the latter was . charged by the former with improper conduct. Mr. Taylor, consideri ng himself deeply aggriev? ed, determined to obtain satisfaction, and went .ap to Mr. Liniebouse and asked him to walk ?ont of the ladies ' car. When the next car was reached Taylor, accused Limehonse of ungon -tlemanly conduct, and struck him several times, as we anderstand, with a cowhide. Limehonse defended himself, and s ime blows were exchanged. Taylor then drew a pistol, bat the weapon was jerked out of his hand by . some one of the passengers. Taylor formally notified Limehousc that he was ready and wil? ling to meet him at any lime, and then left thc train and returned to the citv. How REBEL OUTRAGES ARE MADE_A letter was received in this city last week, in which it was charged that "Mr. Rose, the senator hom York, on his way homeward from Columbia, on Friday night (October 2), was mobbed at .Chester and compelled to return to Columbia." The letter waa not official, bat it was written by a gcutlcman who is presumed to have ac . cess to tho official information collected by Bureau agents and miscellaneous Radicals Knowing the quiet and inoffensive temper of the people of thc State, we inq aired into the matter of thia alleged outrasre, and have re? ceived the following account from an eye-wit? ness, for whose veracity we can vouch : After caref-il inquiry I leam that a small party of young men serenaded Mr. Rose at the hotel where he wai stopping, singing, in de? rision, '-The Last Roso of Summer," and that whea tho Yorkvillo train was about leaving, one of them exclaimed to the conductor, "Loos, out, the Senator Rose is on your train." It would have been better perhaps to have omit? ted these demonstrations which have no sig? nificance whatever, inasmuch as the ci.izeus here treat him and his stripe with the most si? lent contempt. The report of his being mob? bed ia a sheer fabrication, and of coarse got ap for political effect. THE OPENING OF THE THEATRE LAST NIGHT. A fine audience {rreeted thc first appearance of thc new dramatic company list night, and the evening's entertainment passed off with as much eclat as Manager Templeton could have wished. Miss Alice Vane, as Little Barefoot, looked and acted more charm? ingly than ever, and her singing of ii Bacio was received with a degree of enthu? siasm seldom manifested by a Charl: ston au? dience. Of the new actors, Mr. Charles Web? ster is probably destined to become especially popular, bv dint of his droll ballad singing. The orchestra last evening was quite effective, and a great improvement upon ihe piano vhich was used last season. To-night wo are to have !; Still Waters Bun Deep." RADICAL MEETING LAST NIGHT.-Thc meet? ing last night on the Battery was attended by about three hundred unenthnsia?tic Republi cans. The first speaker was Mr. Mackey (for? merly of Mackey & Baker), who delivered his maiden speech in favor of Pillsbury, who spoke next, giving a sketch of his lifo and a description of his sufferinirs in tho cause of his dear people. Mr. Pillsbury was pathetic in the extreme, and was followed by Dr. King, formerly of thc United States Army. None ot the Republican leaders, white or colored, were present, but a series of resolutions approving the election of Pillsbury wore adopted. BUSINESS iN'OTIClCS.
