THE MONTHLY MEETING of the Catholic In stito*e will be held this evening, 8th instant, Rt half-past seven o'clock, at the hall, No. 263 King-street. BASE BALL.-A match game was played yes? terday afternoon between Excelsior and Eutaw Ba3e Ball Clubs. After two innings the game was called by the umpire, resulting in favor of | the Entaws. THE STEAMSHIP SEA GULL.-The steamer Sea Gull, of the Baltimore line, which left that city on Saturday last, and which was due here on Tuesday, has been detained in Hampton Boads by h 3avy weather. The dispatch stiting this fact does not give any information in refer?*::.e to her time of leaving. DEMOCRATIC WARD MEETINGS.-The Demo? cratic clubs of the different wards held their weekly meetings last night. There was a large and enthusiastic attendance at each club, and addresses were made by the prominent lawyers and public speakers of the city, on the principles of Democracy, aud the necessity that existed for every man to put his shoulder to the wheel of party progress. STEEL RAILS.-The South Carolina Railroad Company received, by the schooner N. W. Smith, a shipmen: of four hundred bars of i steel rails, which will be laid in the depot yards where the trame is incessant. This will be, as far as we know, the first time that steel raila have been used in the South. The durability of steel rails ia so great that they are really cheaper than iron rails, of which, in time, they . must take the place. A JAIL DELIVERY AND A WARNING TO HOUSE KEEPERS. - A number of colored prisoners, who have been confined in j iii for larceny and other misdemeanors, have been lately released and are now prowling over the city-free ;o steal and vote. It is Bhrewdly ourmised that the right of suffrage, which they now possess, was - the cause that induced the powers that be to open their prison doors and give them a chance to play a part at the coming election. This . election is still a month distant, and it be? hooves all housekeepers to be on the alert, or they will find that the newly enfranchised have abused their liberty by making free with their Lares and Penates. THE MEDICAL COLLEGE OF SOUTH CARO? LINA.-AS wiU be seo a by an advertisement in another column, the exercises of this valuable institution of learning will be resumed on Mon? day, November 2. No medical college in the country has a brighter record than the Medi? cal College of South Car oh'na. Noted from its foundation io the present tims for the high standing of the members of its faculty, it numbers among its graduates distinguished physicians, who now. ocrapy important pro? fessorships in other medical colleges and in universities, or who are reaping the profits of j large and lucrative piactioe at home or abroad. KiNO-STEET ?MPEOVE1ENT3-VON S ANTEN'S '.NEW BAZAAR.-The business portion_of King street is gradually assuming its former gay and festive appearance. The stores are being refitted and refurnished, and the old mer? chants aie gradually reoccupying the promi? nent stands on this thoroughfare. The store immediately north of the Adger building, for? merly occupied by Messrs. E. Scott & Co., is now undergoing a complete repair before it is occupied by Mr. F. von Santen as a toy and fancy goods bazaar. The heavy stone front has been replaced by a light iron structure, and the interior changed to suit the new busi? ness. The stand, in many respects, is one of the best on the street, and Mr. von Santen is prepared to make it one of the most attractive resorts in the city. MEETING OF THE MAGISTRATES. -The differ? ent Magistrates in the city mot at Magistrate Schroder's office, in the rear of the Court? house, yesterday morning, to ascertain how the acts passed by tho Legislature had affected their jurisdiction. Attorney-General Chamber? lain was present, and stated that they would act as heretofore, but with an enlarged juris? diction, tho amount being raised from ?20 to $99. There would be no removals, but the offi? ces would be held at the will of the Governor, who would also make such new appointments as should seem proper. The Attorney-General in conclusion stated that the bill to provide for Justices of the Peace had not passed, and he could give no more definite information until he received an official copy of tho act concerning Magistrates from Columbia. The meeting was then adjourned. THE CLXBK OF THE COURT AND THE QUO WAB BANTO.-The State ex relatione the Attorney General vs. -Tno. W. Brownfield, or, as il is bet? ter known, the quo warrante -mse regarding the Clerk of the Court, will be hoard before Chief Justice Willard this morning. Messrs. Duryea & Cohen wdl appear for Mr. Brown? field, and D. H. Chamberlain, Esq., the new Attorney-General, will represent A. C. Rich? mond, the claimant of the office. Thc sugges? tion of the claimant shows that at the election held on the 2d and 3d of June last Addison C. Richmond was duly elected to this position. He qualified on tbe 1st of July, and subse? quently demanded the office and records .which demand was refused, and he now prays that in consideration of justice due to tho people and to himself that the said Jno. W. Brownfield bo summoned to appear beforo tho Chief Jus? tice, anti sho^ by what authority he retains the office. This paper was sifrnod by the officers of the law and duly nerved upon Mr. Brownfield, who will appear through his counsel to-day and plead his cause. The precedent already es? tablished shows that but one decision will be rendered, and A. C. Richmond will soon as? sume the duties of the office. APPLES.-"We Dotice the receipt of apples by steamer from New York. This naturally loads to the inquiry : 'Have we no apples nearer homer" Yes, there are plenty-a large crop this year in Gree nville, Pickons" and Anderson Districts; and apples, too, equal in flavor to any coming from the North. 'Ab, but the the freight.' Well, the freight is less than a dollar a barrel from Walhalla to Charleston, a distance of about three hundred miles. Now cannot our dealers make arrangements with producers and forwarders in our up-country towns to lay apples down here in Charleston, at a lower rato than when purchased in New York, and brought here? We think this can be done, and hopo it will be done." Now, sir, apples shipped from New York by steamer are laid down at our doors two days and a halt from date of shipment, more than twice the distance from Greenville, S. C.; whereas shipments made at Greenville, S. C., October 1st, 1868, have not yet arrived in this city. 8ix days since date of shipment. How encouraging for up-country producers and shippers 1 Oh, for an ox team ! A. N. C. f We know of no reason why apples should not be sent from Greenville to Charleston in less than two days and a half.
