BARE BALL.-A match game of base ball was
playe-i yesterday afternoon between the Athens
.and Eosehill bose ba'l clubs, which resulted in
favor of the Athens.
TO? BOLL WOBM.-The boll worm has made
its appearance in the vicinity of Columbia. A
-cotton plant shown at the Phonix office was
terribly cut up. The plant contained living
-specimens of the caterpillar and black worm.

of the late Master in Equity, arrived in this
city yesterday on a visit to his famil y. Mr.

TIME COMPUTATIONS.-The new year of the

53d year of American Independence, and the
80th sinc9 the adoption of the constitution.
ACCIDENTAL DROWNING.-A note received
from Cain Hoy states that on the 18th instant
a colored man named Jack Williams waa acci
.dentally drowned near the village by the cap?
sizing of his boat. Efforts were made to save
"him and to recover the body, but without suc?
cess. Williams was about 40 years of age.
SALE OF CUBA MOLASSES.-Tho cargo of
molasses per brig Scio ' from .Matanzas was of
-fered yesterday at public sale by Mr. F. P.
Salas, and partly disposed of. The following

lasses at 42c. per gallon; sixty hhds. Muscova

THE EUTAW BAND.-This fine baud, which
was attached to the 25th Sooth Carolina Vol?
unteers- the Eutaw Regiment-during tho war,
bas recently returned to the city, after a tour
-through a portion of tho State where their
well-known notos sounded the Democratic
rally. Their rest ?ill be but of abort duration,
-as their services are engaged during the re
mainder of the campaign.
HIGH TIDES.-The tides of the past few days
nave been extremely high, and the low and

PAINFUL ACCIDENT.-In Columbia, at a late
hour on Monday night, as two young mon,
Charles "Radcliffe and William Bowers, were

party fell on the floor and exploded, the ball
grazing the heel of Radcliffe and burying itself j
in the calf of Bowers' leg. , -The ball was ex

immediately pounded, and shipped to New

per, and amounted to about nino hundred

rocont Democratic gathering at Florence, a
letter was read by Captain Gilbert, from the
editor of tbe Bostoa Courier, which stated
that during the war tho Rev. B. F. Whittcmore,
while in service, appropriated tho sum of S?OOO.

ABHEBT OE CATTLE THIEVES.-Magistrate
McTants, of Goose Creek, Berkeley District,
has arrested Reuben Thompson and Cicero
Gibbs, two colored men, charged with stealing
the cattle mentioned in yesterday's NEWS.
Those men have been noted in that section for
their depredations, and for ovor six months
have been preying on tho neighborhood. They
were brought to the city yesterday, and turned
over to Lieutenant Hendricks for examination.
THE CHARLESTON SCHOOL AND HOSTE.-The
following is the report of the Board of Trus?
tees of the Charleston School and Home, re?
ceiving aid from the "'Baltimore Pioneer South?
ern Educational Aid Society," for the month of
August, 1868 :
The Board report that tho months ot August
and September have been given as a vacation
to the Home and School. The only expense
tor August, for which they ask ymir aid, is the
sum of $50 for the matron and assistant at tho
Home, and $20 for the janitor of the school
total $70. We aro compelled to keep theso
officials to preserve the property and to pre?
pare tor the opening exercise.-) in October. Re?

Esq*. At Ward 5 a beautiful illumination of
gas jets was arranged over the main entrance
to the hall, th? gas shades on which were in?
scribed "5th Ward Democracy." The whole
wai in the shape, of an arch, each globe bear?
ing a letter. The illumination was designed
by Messrs. J. H. Devereux and R. Arnold, and
could be seer at a long distance. Each meet?
ing, was well attended, and the speakers listen?
ed to attentively.
MES. R. F. W. ALLSTON.-An announcement
of interest and importance to the yonu? ladies
of Charleston, and indee 1 of the whole State,
appears in our columns this morning. The
select boarding and day school of Mrs. R. F.
W. Allston wdl be reopened on the ?5th of noxt
month. This institution, established since the
war by one of the first ladies of the State, has
met with deserved succeed. It affords every
facility for obtaining a kuowledgeof the higher
branches of education and those a.complish
ments deemed necessrj-y to young ladies enter?

DEMOCRATIC MEETING IN ST. PAUL'S PARISH.
A Democratic meeting was held at St. Paul's
Church, in St. Paul's Parish, on Saturday, the
12th instants The meeting was called to
order, and M. E. Hutchinson requested to take
the chair. A committee was appointed to
nominate officers, and reported the following :
For President, Col. Thomas Limehouse; Vice
Presidents, Captain Tennant, Philip Hutson
and Thos. Peoples; Secretary, Philip Messer
vey, and they were unanimously elected. The
Democratic platform was adopted, and the
nomination of Seymour and Blair endorsed.
The speaking commenced with un appropri?
ate address by M. E. Hutchinson, Esq., follow?
ed by Hon. F. D. Richardson* who occupied the
stand for nearly two hours. Speeches were
also made by B. J. Limehouse and Thos. P.
Lockwood, Esq. The meeting; then adjourned
to dinner.
After dinner William Biiley, (colored,) came
forward and asked to be allowed to speak. He
was conducted to the stand by the president,
and was greeted with throe hearty cheers. He
spoke in favor of tho South, claimed tc bo a
Democrat, and urged his colored friends to
stand by tho platform and caat their vote* with
him.
After an address by the president, tb o meet?
ing adjourned with nine cheers for Seymour
a _d Blair. .
THE HEALTH OF CHAELESTON.-The sum?
ming up of the bill of mortality for last week
only one death among the whites and twenty
among tho blacks-affords two subjects for
serious reflection-?rst, tho extraordinary
health of the city at this soason of the yoar;
second, the remarkable contrast between the
mortality of tho whites and negroes. In re?
gard to the health of tho city, Charloston is
always healthy except when visited by epi?
demics, and there is,.with that exception, of
course, but Little difference between the ave?
rage mortality in winter and summer. From
epidemics; we have been entiroly free since the
close of the war, uuless the small pox io 1865
and 1866 was entitled to bo so-called. That
wo have been'free from yellow fever is easily
accounted tor by the strict quarantine which
has been maintained, and tue absence ot trade
with yellow fever ports. As tc whethor that is
the true way of accounting lor it, doctors differ.
Thc large mortality aaion;' the colored pop?
ulation as compared with that among the
whites, will aston's'a no ono who Las seen the
squalor and filth in which tho majority of the
negroes of this city live, to gay l.o'.btug of
their addiction to mid light carousals of every
kind. Thoy live iu tho wurst Louses and in
the moat unhealthy localities in thc city. Un?
accustomed to take care of themselves, they
aro satisfied to Uve from hand to mouth, often
s lending in a day tho belter part of ibo carn- j
ings of a week, or even of a mon'ii, and nearly
stirvmg themselves until thc next pay day.
Of course there arc mauy creditable exceptions
to this account, but it is correct as regards
the largo body of the negroes, and especially
of those who havo drifted to thc
city irom tho plantations of tho hw country.
Want of cleanliness, tho lack of proper nutri?
ment, and thc abicnco of skilled medical at?
tendance, doubilcss render many cases among
the colored people falal, wh ch. but for these
causes, might have a more favorable termina?
tion. Thc wreck cf the prosperity oi the white
people has of course enhanced, m a great de?
gree, thc misfortunes of thc blacks. From thc
very nature of thc negro, however, these
causes must continue to work with more or
less fatality, no matter what may bo (ho condi?
tion o? tho whites; and although in ela very thc
negroes increased rapidly, in freedom they will
gradually disappear.

for ladies-ornamental texts-German, old
English, Roman and nondescript, and uhtpely
flourishes in great variety. Instructicus aro
given to teachers and pupils in regard to the
use of tho books, tho positioa iu writing, thc
grasp of thc pen, and tho movements by which
the letters are to be executed. In this system
the long letters are more deeply shaded than
the rest; thc small a's and -s's are similarly dis?
tinguished-a peculiarity which seems to bo a
mere conceit until one observes how it breaks
the monotony of the mating, which would
otherwise tire with its delicate strokes and
consummate fiuish. Congdon's penmanship
needs o ily to be examined in order to win its
way to general favor and use.
