as a valuable assis ta nco in his own labors and
. excellent means of propagating the knowledge
of the art._
Too MUCH NOISE.-The intersection of Broad
-and Meeting streets is one of the noisiest
places in tho city, mach to the disgust of the
-city fathers, who aro anxious to find some
ways and means of quelling the turmoil.
They will report on some plan at tho next
'meeting of Council, as at the list session tbeir j
voices could scarcely he heard above the din.
ARRIVAL OF THE GOLCONDA AT BALTIMORE.
. -Tho Baltimore Sun of Tuesday says: 'Tho ship

had died suddenly, and a poet mortem elimi?

and F. L. Parker. The jory weie then ad?
journed to tina morning, when the post mortem
will bo concluded.
QUICK WORE.-Tho steamer Champion,
which arrived on Tuesday night, brought the
largest freight of the season. Most of it was
'for the South Carolina Railroad, and through
the activity of Mr. J. Gay, the Transportation
Agent, over two hundred and twenty-five dray
loads were taken yesterday from Adger's Wharf
?to the Sooth Carolina Railroad Depot.
' THE ' CATER FILL AR IN CHRIST CHUROH.
-Several specimens of tho cotton plant showing
the worms in every stage of development, and
'the ravages committed by them, were exhibit?
ed yesterday on East Bay, at the store of ]
.Messrs. La urey & Alexander. The plants came
: from Mr. B. Boddin's place in Christ Church;
one was completely "denuded by the third
growth caterpillar, while the other showed the
-different stages of development from the co?
coon to the foll grown worm. The caterpillars
are very rapacious, and the . field s which they
liare passed over look as if scathed by fire.
THE BOAHDS OF COB MTSSIONKBS. - It is under?
stood that the new County Commissioners
haye prepared a statement, which will be sub?
mitted to the Governor, and that the question
sato their legality will be settled byan ap
plicatior. for a writ of qw voarmnto, which
will be beard bet?re Judge Willard, before the
adjournment of the Legislature. The Com?
missioners of Public Buildings, who are the | i
. stumbling block in the way, held a meeting
recently and elected Mr.- Mortimer W. Yen?
ning, to 611 the vacancy occasioned by the
death of Mr. Jas. P. Earle. The following are
the members of this board as they now stand:
.C.: M. Furman, Jas. M. Eaaon, Juc. Schnierle,
Wm. Houston, Geo. H. Hacker, E. L. Roche.
M. W. Yenning. Neither board has any funds,
the new commissioners having never made a
raise, and the money in possession of the old
board having boen expended on the Court?
house and Fire-Proof building. The new
board have a table and a few chairs, whose
anetlon value is about one dollar and fifty
cents. The old board have several hundred
-dollars in the hands of ex-Sheriff Hastie, which
was collected on executions, and will be re?
gained until Lhe qua warrinto is settled.
BASK BALL ON THE BRAIN.-The recent
of the Forest City Club from Savanna!
{riven an impetus to the base ball fever, re
ing in the forming of the Queen City Club,
have already signalized themselves by sen
their first challenge. The newly fledged
ists, who aro mostly printers, have forn
invited the compositors of this paper (or
best nine in the lot), to a friendly joust at
Half-moon Battery, on next Saturday,
printers of THE NEWS bavo signified their
ceptanca, under certain eruditions, and
game will be played with all the lute impr
ments k'iown to the fraternity of cypo3. It
be the biggest thing of the season, and wil
the most exciting gamo on record, as the ch
pions will bs awarded new shooting sticks.
COTTON TN FLOBID?,-Accounts from vari
parts of Florida represent the cotton croi
being irretrievably ruined by tho calerpil
and the yield will be lesa than last year. !
following is an extract from a letter recoivec
a factor of this city:
HOUSTON, COLUMBIA Co., FLORIDA,
September 5,1868.
Cotton in thia and adjoining counties is ho
lessly ruined bv the caterpillar, not a leaf 1
and all the topbolls eaten up in some field
all more or less injured. There can be no do
as to tho reBult in this vicinity-a half cror
compared with last year's crop, is tho utm
limit.
In some places the fields look like a fire 1
passed through them.
Accounts from adjoining counties are nea
as bad._
COMMERCIAL CTBCULAB.-Messrs. Willis
Chisolm, of our city, have favored us witl
copy of their Crop Circular, dated tho 7th it
It appears to be a fair and moderate view
the situation and prospective yield of the p
sent growing crop, in which they estimate 1
probable receipts at the ports at 2.185,
bales. Tho coming crop of sea islands a
Floridas they think will produce about 22.1
bags, and the rice crop of Carolina and Ge
gia some 50,000 tierces. They take a hope
view of affairs. While the labor has improvi
by a more extended experience and less int
terence from outside advisers, the position
the planter is strengthened by a good p:
vision crop, and in many cases by bavi
straggled through the year without having c
tained a single large advance.
THE PALMETTO FIOWEEB CO-OPEBATIVB A
SOCIATION.-A few (acts concerning the histo
and prospects of this experiment, in soc
economy, are worthy of note. As the rest
of last quarter's business, the actual divide;
upon the amount invested in supplies, ai
that paid towards the permanent fund, at on
establish the claims of the Association upi
every student of economy and thrift. The
exista an almost absolute guarantee that tl
saving yearly upon expenditures for supplii
will reach fifteen per cent, and tho interest <
permanent investments six por cent. Tl
conditions of membership aro tho paymei
of one dollar on entrance, ana the reguli
weekly payment thereafter of a like amount.
A few shares in the Association are still m
sold, ant1 can be subscribed for at the etoi
of the Af sociation in Market-Btreet.
CHATLESTON E5TEBFKL3E.-The vari cns a
gumente in favor of Charleston as a market f<
South sra mermante in preference to New Yoi
and other Northern cities, have often been pn
eented to the public, but perhaps never in t
Buccin ct and attractive a form as in the circi
lax which Messrs. John 8. Fairly & Co. ha\
prefixed to the catalogue which they are no
sending to their customers in Georgia, Nort
and South Carolina and Florida. We may n
publish this argument at some future time, bi
notice it at present moro particularly for th
purpose of calling attention to the manner i
which the catalogue and circular are printer]
Ihey are gotten np in neat pamphlet form b;
Messrs. Walker, Evans A Cogswell, whose im
print, ever a guarantee of excellence, is on thu
catalogue, as fine an advertisement for thei
extensive job printing establishment as th
catalogne is for Messrs. John 8. Fairly tc Cc
The catalogue tells the world that Messrs. Johi
S. Fairly & Co. have on hand an extensive as
aortment of white goods, hosiery, gloves am
fancy goods ; but the pamphlet proves by it
typographical appearance that the job printing
office of Messrs. Walker, Evana & Cogswell ii
complete both as to the extent and quality o
matenal and the number and skill of the work
mon. _:

HEBE TS A PICTURE drawn from life by ?
Colombia correspondent of the New Yorl
World: "Passing np from Charleston, ant
looking ont on the right of the road, be tweet
Langville and this place, there is an immense
clearing, which a few years ago was undei
splendid cultivation, and, at this season of th?
year, white with cotton, with hundreis ol
hands busily employed. It is now growing ii
weeds, and has no fencing, and, indeed, pre?
sents no sign of life. As the train lashed
along, a solitary negro man was seen 8'anding
in the open fiel ; he was very tall, hatless,
shoeless, and the OD ly garment he were waa, a
loose cotton shirt reaching to his knees-a
style of dress, or absence of dress whi :h, how?
ever common formerly among the Lt tl j negroes
on the large plantations, was never l:nowo
among the adults. This tall, coal-black negro,
in a state o. almost nudity, had over his i,boul?
der a long fishing-rod, and presented a strik?
ing and suggestive tableau as he stood looking
at the flying train, with miles of once fertile
but now uncultivated lands lying all around
him-lands lying fallow for the want of just
Buch labor. In thous inda of instances like
this, emancipation and the Bureau have con -
verted useful tillers of tho soil into idle,
vicious vagrants, who are rapidly going back
to barbarism, and must become a baneful
curse to the country. "
DEMOCRATIC CLUB MEETINGS.-The different
Democratic Ward Clnb3 held meetings at their
respective halls last night for the purpose of
electing five delegates from each to form the
Central Committee to nominate a Congressman
for this district. The following are the names
of those elected in the several wards :
Ward l.-B. O'Neill, W. A, Wardlaw, W. L.
Doggett, J. L. Toomey, Chas. Ioglesby.
Ward 2.-M. W. St. Amand, Joseph Hilton,
John Grimball, W. H. Easterby, John ]?ur
kamp.
Ward 3-J. Campsen, Theo. Cordes, L. C.
Nowell, W. Knox, H. Robertson.
Ward 4-J. A. Wagener, E. L. Roach, E.
Baynard Seabrook, W. A. Kelly, J. B. Lafitte.
Ward 5.-H. P. Archer, Dr. J. L. Dawson, A.
Burnett Rhett, Dr. Alfred Raoul, Chas. Foster.
Ward 6 -Up to a late hour no election had
been held.
Fara* 7.-E. D. Enston, J. M. Eason, J. E.
Carew, H. L. Brandt, J. W. Wardell.
Ward 8.-No election returns had been fur
lished.
Addresses were made by Wm. Wbaley, Esq.,
in Ward 4, and by F. D. Richardson, Esq., in
ff ard 8. Dr. E. Montague Gnmk > was elected
:he secretary of Ward 7, vice Hacker re?
signed.
A resolution emanating from Ward 2 was
read in each ward, requesting the other wards
to nnito with them in an invitation to Hon.
Howell Cobb, Hon. Benj. Hill and General J.
B. Gordon, of Georgia, to address a mass
meeting to be held in Charleston at some fu?
ture day; the presidents to form the committee
of invitation and the vice-presidents the com
mitte of arrangements. The resolution of
Ward 2 was adopted in each instance before
adjournment.
SMOKE'S CBOSS ROAD DEMOCRATIC CLUB.
In accordance with a published call, the citi?
zens in the vicinity of Smoke's Croes Roads
assembled at that place on Saturday last, the
5th inst., for the purpose of organizing a
Democratic Club.
Quite a respectable number of intelligent
planters, and some negroes, wore upon the
ground at the designated hour, and the tem?
porary organization of the meeting was effect?
ed by calling Benjamin Stokes, Esq., to the
chair, and P. J. Malone and Jefferson Warren,
Esqs., to act as Secret aries.
Mr. Stokes, in taking the chair, addressed
the meeting at considerable length.
A committee was appointed to prepare busi?
ness, and Capt. William G. Godfrey and Robert
Campbell, Esq., of Walterboro', delivered
plain, practical and solid addresses. Messrs.
Godfrey and Campbell wero appointed by the
District Central Club to canvass the district in
the interest of tho party, and are doing their
work with energy and effect.
Resolutions were adopted endorsing tho
principles of tho Democratic party, and or?
ganizing a club, and tho following officers
were elected :
Pr. PETER STOKES. President
Major D. L. SMITH, First vice-President.
Capt. ROBERT BLACK, Second vice-President.
T. R. WILLIAMS, Third vice-President.
Col. WM. STOKES, Corresponding Secretary.
JEFFERSON WARREN, Recording Secretary.
DISTURBANCES AT ADAMS' RUN.-The follow?
ing communication is vouched for by three re?
spectable gentlemen:
ADAMS' RUN, September 3.
Mr. Editor-The quiet of this parish bas
been broken by a meeting held near this place
on the 29th nit., which was addressed by Capt.
J. W. Grace and J. S. Craig;. Captain Grace
holds, he says, the office of magistrate; and
this, added to the machinery of the League,
causes the deluded free amen to consider them?
selves his abject slaves. It was no surprise,
therefore, to bear them state that they were
uo dared" to assemble. Finding upon this oc?
casion that politics alone did not interest their
audience, those orators painted /or them a
diabolical picture of their condition should the
Democrats succeed. Craig stated that if the
Republicans were defeated, ho must leave tho
cou itry or be hung to the nearest black jack.
Capt. Grace was more jovial, and promised a
supply of whiskey at a future meeting.
As a result of these harangues labor strikes
have begun, and tho lives of foremen report?
ing misconduct to tnoir omployers are threat?
ened. Some ot the most sensible of the freed
-ffien seemed quite reiievedwhen informed that
the Democrats are not such demons as depict?
ed; but others of them in this vicinity are so
excited that the desire is expressed openly,
even amongst their women, to "shoot every
rebel and Democrat from the faco of the
earth." _ _ST. PAUL'S.
