Scarce? ly anything was saved. The origin of the fire ?.waa unknown. NEW Ornea ALS AT THE JAIL. -Sheriff Mackey iaa formally appointed Albert Fellippi (white) 48 Jailor, G. M. Magrath (colored) as chief ?clerk, and S. D. Howard (colored) as turnkey of the Jail. No changes have boen made thus Jar in the aheiiff's office. A CHANCE FOR A TRIP.-The steamer Chris? tiana, which was chartered by the Forest City ?Club, leaves for Savannah to-night, at ten -o'clock. Those persons desirous of visiting -the Forest City can embrace this opportunity, -?nd thus save both time and money, the fare / -being only $L_ CAUGHT NAPPINO.-Several negroes were -arrested. Saturday night for sleeping in the market, and were furnished quarters in a less .conspicuous place. This is the first swoop -that has been made upon the market sleepers, and if followed up will add nightly to the popu? lation of the guardhouse. F.iVTLT JARS.-A mass meeting, assuming to spetk for "the Republicans of Charleston," has passed resolutions ratifying and confirm? ing the action of the Bowen faction, in nomi? nating delegates to -the Republican State Con? vention, and repudiating and condemning the - action of "the small minority which seceded." Now, what have the Epping faction to say to this? _________ THE EDIHTO STEAMEB.-The fine steamer St. Helena having been thoroughly refitted, will 'this week resume her regular trips twice a week to Edisto and the way lan dinge, leaving - Charleston every Tuesdav and Friday morn - iug at half-past 6 o'clock. CAMPAIGN SOHO.-We have received from -Zogbaum & Young, Music-3eliera, King-street, a copy of "Sweet Hiram Ulysses Come Home," - ? campaign song, composed by H. Briggs and published by A. C. Blackman, New York. The -words are poor and the music is worse, but the good intentions of the writer will cover a -multitodo of sins. Will not some one write us a good Seymour and Blair campaign song? It is wanted .""badly. _ ANOTHER COTTON PRESS.-The cotton press :at the corner of St. Michael's Alley and Church . street, which, was brunted-lng the war, is to be rebuilt and the workmen have already com? menced op?rations. A larger area will be en? closed than heretofore, and the facilities for "pressing and ntoring cotton be corresponding 'ly increased. The chimney is in a good state ?of preservation and will be used in tbs new ^building, which will be completed about the mi ddlo of October, in full time for tbe cotton -business. ? THE DEMOCRACY AT BRANOHVLLLIWe '"learn by a special telegram that there was a .large and enthusiastic meeting of white, and - -colored voters at Branchville on Saturday, un " -der the auspices of the Democratic Club of 'that place, and that the spirit prevailing was .such as to afford good ground to predict an . overwhelming de'eat of the Radiaala - that TJoriion af the State next November. Thomas, two colored speakers, -and others._ THE WEEHAWEEN.-The work on the wreck .of the Weehawken, sunk near the Lighthouse -Channel, bas been suspended for tho present, .:and the boats and material used in endeavor? ing to raise her will be employed elsewhere. -During the late stormy weather a large air -tank was broken- to pieces, and the further progress o t the work delayed. It is stated that -an off j: t will be made to raise the Housatonic, .which was sunk off the bar by the famoua ?cigar boat during the war, and that curious -.piece of naval architecture may again see the .light of day._ Pos Torn CE . THIEVES.-The detectives ?on Saturday arrested two small mul? latto boys, charged with taking letters from the postoSce, br&iking them open and ii they did not contain money dastroying "them. They were in the habit of asking for 'Jettera at the windaw, giving any n?_es that they fancied. This was kept up for some time, .but suspicions were aroused, and on Saturday ?one of the boys was caught by a clerk of the .office and turned over to the detectives, who soon secured his accomplice. THE COLORED D EM OCRA CY_The m seting of the colored Democratic Club held in Ford -ham'sHall on Friday was remarkable from '.the fact that a number of colored Radicals - were present. They went theie to hear what 'was said by the Democrats, and tho only ex? citement during the meeting was that which ?gr 3 w out of objection made t > allowing Lang? ley, the colored Radical lawyer, to speak. Tue leading white and colored Democrats who were present urged tho meeting to allow Lang? ley to speak to his heart's content ; and, when he had finished, ho was replied to by one of the white Democrats in an able and convincing manner. The meeting was presided over by John Cross, the Chairman of the Club, and - adjourned regularly and io good order. THE FALL FASHIONS are beginning to make their appearance. It may interest the ladv readers of THE NEWS to know that the ..pan? nier" style is to continue in vocue; also, that hoop-akirts are to bc worn rather largor at tte - bottom, and about the same size at the top as at present worn; also, that trains are to be worn, not so long as formerly; also, that bon? nets have undergone but little chan e; if any? thing, th J size is smaller than usual. Some of the latest importations, made of velvet, are pnffdd on the centre, with a coronet or diadem in front, adorned with bead coronals, and trimmed with tufts of feathers; strings of lace, clasped by a flower, with lon j satin onds fail? ing from this lace to near the bottom of the dress. BASK BALL-ARRIVAL OF THE FOREST CIT? CLUB._The steamer Christiana, which arrived from Savannah yesterday morning, at half-past seven o'clock, bronght the members of the Forest City Club, who are to engage in a match ga mo of base ball with the Alert Clnb of this city. The visitors were met on the wharf by a delegation from the Alert? and escorted to the Charle."ton Hotel. The guests are mostly young men, the majority being Georgians, and after recoveriug from the fatigue of the trip, they spent the groater portion of yesterday in sightseeing. Tho visitors will be the guests of the Alerts during their stay, and the match game will be played on the Citadel Green at half-past two o'clock this afternoon. Every arrangement has been made tor the accommodation of spectators, and one hundred arm-chairs have been placed on the rising ground in trout of the east wing of the Citadel for the special use of the ladies who may wish to witness the game. The play-ground has been marked ont, and all spectators are requested to keep at a proper distance and not impede the motions of the players. Both clubs are in good practice and sanguine of victory. It wdl be the en? deavor of the Alerts so to entertain their visit? ing friends tb at they shall hereafter cherish pleasant recollections of their trip to Charles? ton. A trial game between the second nines of the two clubs will be played this morning, and at the conclusion of the evening game the contestants will meet around the festive board, at the Masonic Hall, and forget base ball in the discussion of something more substantial. ! THE CLERKSHIP OF THE COURT.-Mr. A. C. Bich mond, the lately elected Clerk of the Court, made a written demand for that office on Saturday, which was answered by Messrs. Duryea & Cohen, the attorneys of Mr. Brown? field, declining to give up the office, unless compelled to do so by legal process. It is probable that a hearing of the case will bo had at an early day before Judge Willard, in Colom? bia. The following is the correspondence which passed between the parties : J. W. A LIN ORBING LEGISLATOR.-The Macon Jour? nal and Messenger gives tbe following account of the nigger who is costing the State of Geor? gia three thousand dollars per day. A hearty laugh went round town yesterday morning at the pretensions raised in the Legis? lature.by Fy all, who fives in Macon, and is "the honorable member from Macon County," that he was a white man, born in Charleston, and of French parentage. He is, according to tLis, a French gentleman, But this is not exactly so. His biography is briefly as follows: His father was a Charleston French dancing master, by the name of Fyall, or Fiai, who baa been run out of San Domingo for some political rascality, and his mother a negress. He ran away from Charleston on a vessel going to Europe, and some years later returned as the ste wail of a ship. Hfe waa recognized, taken charge . f, and sold to|Habersha>n, of Savannah. He ?as first owned in ttiis city, many years before the war, by Dr. M. 8. thompson, who sold him to Mr. A. .Patterson, proprietor of the Georgia bar and billiard saloon, Mulberry-street. Pat? terson had him tending tbe bar, waiting on the billiard room, and working around the house generally. Ho soon detected him steal? ing from the money drawer, put bim in jail, had him thrashed, and sold bim to Judge ?. A. Lochrane. Whilo he waa the servant of the judge he started a small tinker shop and dead fall near Rsa & Cotton's old corner, on Cotton-Avenue, which the police soon discov? ered to be tho receptacle for stolen goode. They turned bim out and closed tho concern. Ina few nights after that the shop \v..s set on fire and tli9 whole comer burn d out. He was Rtrougly suspected with being the in? cendiary, but no positive prool was ob'aiued against him. Inibimatiun Wanted. To the Editor of the Newt: In the early part of the present year an inof? fensive and quiet white man named Bradford was most brutally murdered in the Yillase of Walterboro' by three discharged colored sol? diers. We were then uud?r military govern nrnt. Much time elapsed before the villains were identified; then wc heard that they had been arrested aud confined in Castle l'iuckn y to await their trial by a milucry cour t. Ibis was about May last. A?'ain, wo hoard that the court had convened-was proceeding with ihe trial, and that the testimony against the ac? cused was overwhelming-one of thom ha ving been taken as witness for the prosecution. This was the very last we ever heard of thoso Bame follows. Two or three months at least hive elapsed since then. Where are the prisoners? Did the court conclude the trial before the change of the government from military to civil? If not, have the prisoners been turned over to the civil authority ? If it did conclude the trial, what was the decision, and where now are the murderers ? We desire to call tho Governor's attention to this matter at one?, for a more unprovoked and cold blooded murder, never has been per? petrated since the world was formed.
