A HOUSEBREAKER CAUGHT.-A few nights - since a residence at the corner of Meeting and -Henrietta streets was entered at night by s seme adroit thief, who scaled the fence and got 'into the second story. Once inside he made a -general liaul of hata and clothing, and succeed? ed in effecting his escape unobserved. The -ease being reported to the detectives, John Henry Thomas, alias Savannah Slocum, a well Irao+fh colored thief, was arrested. A portion of the stolen property, was recovered, and Slo . cum locked in a cen. PUBLIC IMPROVEMENTS.- Tho repairs on the High School, which were imperatively needed, haye been at last commenced, and the build mg will soon be again an ornament to the city. The contract has been awarded to Mr. Curtis, who is BOW actively engaged in changing the ? exterior from its foi mer dingy color to tho . more fashionable cream tint. Mr. C. C. Trumbo, the contractor for the Phoenix Engine H?use, is now rough-casting the same. DnoOBAtlO CLUB, WA.HD No. 7.-At a regu? lar meeting of Domocratic dob, Ward'No. 7, held on the evening of 29th Joly, the following gentlemen were elected a Finance Committee to solicit subscriptions from the residents of Ward No. 7: E. C. Thann, E. D. Ensfon, H. M. Manigault, Leider Schalman, Eogene Walter. ST. MICHAEL'S CLOCK.-This venerable lime keeper now present s to the world a clean face and a pair of hands that mark the fleeting bom3 with unerring certainty. The dial plate was repainted some day J since, and yesterday the black numbers were added and can now be easily seen at a distance of several squares. It was thought that gilding the tips of the bands would render their movements more dis? tinct, and this plan was tried on the south face, but it did not fulfil expectations, and the bands will be painted black, as originally in? tended. The horologist, who bas charge of the striking apparatus, has not yet been able to arrange it satisfactorily, and the erratic strokes were the cause of much comment on 'Change yesterday. _ A SUCCESSOR TO DILL.-A correspondent writing from Camden states that on the 6th instant a Radical convention was held in that place to nominate a successor to Dill, and for other purposes. As the previous meeting, which nominated White was not considered legitimate, not having been called according to Gunter or Jillson, that nomination was thrown out, and one John A. Burnell (white) nominat? ed instead. Birnen is' from North Carolina, but has lived in Camden for several years. He lost an arm from the bursting of a cannon fired in celebrating the fall of Fort Sumter, and bas of late been on the moat intimate terms with the freedmen, politically and socially. White* was for a long time disconsolate, but after can? vassing the town and ascertaining the strength of the convention nominee, he, with the in? gratitude of republics, became disgusted, and retired into the shades of private life. There are many persons in Camden who are still strong in the faith that he will yet go to Co? lumbia, notwithstanding the later nomination. THE YACHT BAOE PHIZES. -The committee to whom waa awarded the task of selecting suit? able prizes for the winning yachts, performed that pleasing duty yesterday. The Ella Anna, as the winning boat of the first race and the queen of the Charleston waters, will receive a large and elaborately ornamented silver salver bearing the following inscription : "Awarded to the yacht Ella Anna, the whiner of the race of August 8,1868." In the centre of the wait? er is a beautiful engraving ot the Ella Anna under full sail. The Maggie Mitchell, the winner of the se? cond race, and the second boat to reach the wharf, has been awarded an elegant silver set, coiunrtfog-of htf<S0^6th^^ pair salt spoons, one mustard spoon, half doz? en eilver forks, and a butter louie. These arti? cle? have all been engraved with the initials of Mr. E. J. Black, the owner of the Maggie. The presentation .will take place on Thurs? day evening, at the Charleston Hotel Club Room, at 8 o'clock precisely. WALHALLA,-This quiet little village, seated among tho hills near the monntains, iu the northwestern regions of oar State, seems(to be bat little known to oar people in the. low country, and yet it baa-advantages which will recommend it to those who may desire to pass a month or two ont pf the relaxing climate of j the sea shore; or to invalids seeking to renew their health. Being contiguous to the moun? tains (it ia quite near to the great tunnel of the Blae Bidge Railroad), it has a bracing at? mosphere, 'cool nigh te, and excellent water, as cold when taken from the -well aa if it had ico in it. Being, the present terminus o? the Blue RidgeBailroad, it ia conveniently accessi? ble to visitors, and has a dairy mail, an ad? vantage not pceaogn?d by many of the interior villages of the State. Bat it may be inquired what sort of ac com modationa"does the village afford for the com? forts of the visitor or invalid. These are very good. At tho Walhalla Hotel (owned by Mr. Biemann, one cf the few Democratic sena? tors to the-, present Radical Legislature in Co? lumbia) a good- table is {bond, provided with an abondance ana* variety, with attentive ser? vants and a. moat industrious, obliging land? lady, who, in the'absence cf Mr. Biemann, is very watchful over the comforts of her guests, especially of thoa? who may be sick. But one cf (he distinguiflhtDg peculiarities of Walhalla ia their moderate price for board. Whilst in moat of the'hotels in. the State, from Charles? ton upwards through all the interior towns, the price of board is from two dollars and fifty cents to three dollars per day, or from fifteen dollars'to twenty-one dollars per week, the price at Walhalla for board equally as good, if not better, is bot seventy-five cents per day, or five dollars per week-a very important con? sideration ir these limes of pecuniary distress among oar people. Walhalla is surrounded, too, by an indus? trious, thrifty German population, from whom the village receives a good supply of poultry, fresh batter, vegetables and trait ia their sea? son, all of which may be procured at moderate prices. RADICAL MEETINGS nv KERSHAW-WB3TTE BXOBE ARD JiLLSON BLOW THEIR HORNS.- Last week the Rev. Congressman Whittomore and Senator Justus K. Jillson held forth in the African Church of Camden. A correspondent kindly furnishes some account of the dusky meeting. Whitemore said that "although Sey? mour's record was good in the early part of the war, yet in '65 he countenanced, if he did not aid, the New York riots, and the murder of six hundred colored men, women and children." Then, after a moment's pause, the reverend demagogue barst forth in his well known sten? torian tones-"Great God, my colored friends, will you vote for the gubernatorial murderer, Horatio Seymour, and know that six hundred colored men, women and children lost their lives, by him?'' Jillson folfoWed the r?v?rend blower^ but his remarks were" rather commonplace, with the exception of the prediction "that if the Dem? ocrats succeeded in electing their President there would be the bloodiest war on record." A County Convention (Radical) was held in Camden on the 6th, for the purpose of nomi? nating candidates to the State Congressional Convention and the Convention for Presiden? tial electors. Jillson was the orator of the occasion, and addressed a large and dusky as? semblage on the electoral question, explaining to his bearers what Presidential elector^ were, and how the machine worked. He also in? structed them in their duties to themselves, their children, the State, and the "whole on bounded universe," in casting their votes for a member of Congress when the time came for an election. He said there might be attempts made to influence them against one who might be nominated, one who had done more for the colored people and the State than could have been d me by a forty-parson p iwer worked by any other min. He would not name the com? ing man, but there might be occasion to do so during the proceedings, though he had no in? terest in the matter, and addressed them onlv for their own good. When the nominations were made for the State Congressional Committee, Jillson was elected one of them. He thanked his cons tit ents for this honor, and assured them that in the convention he would vote every time for the Rev. B. F. Whit tem ore (his anticipated father-in-law). It should be twelve cents anda half', inspection and classification of rosin fifteen cents per barrel, when it should be twelve cents and a half-a difference in favor of Wil? mington market of eighteen cents on spirts and three and a half on rosin. To the Editor of the Ntws: A paragraph has appeared in various papers alluding to Governor Scott as having been i resident of Philadelphia, and as having left that city in debt and disgrace. To correct this erroneous impression and do justice to Govern? or Scott, it is only necessary to 6ay, what is literally true, that Robert Kingston Scott, now Governor of South Carolina, was never a resi? dent of Philadelphia, and never passed six hours in that city in his life. The person against whom the.injurious statements above referred to is supposed to be made is one Rob? ert Kean Scott, and whatever may be true of | him, it is quite certain that Robert Kingston Scott, formerly of Ohio, and now of South Ca? rolina, is ready to pay at sight any lawful claims against him, and has means to do so fifty timeB over.
