They have ceased to hope for the donation of land and moles. They have ceased to apprehend any attempt to reduce them again to bondage. They labor with more regularity, and although the pro? duct of their labor is not so great as formerly, it can be relied on aa a fixed quantity. -Telegrams from a number of localities in the States of Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa and Minnesota, with two or three exceptions, an? nounce the crops of small grain unprecedent? ed, both in quality and quantity, and tho corn never looked better. There are also thousands who make the pilgrimage by the Bed Sea, from Soez to Jedda h ; these had returned previously. -It is s tated in the English papers that Cap? tain J. M. Hodson, whose trip across the At? lantic, starting from :he Bay of New York, in the little ship, Bed, White and Blue, excited mach attention, is in reduced circumstances in London, and without the meane to return to this country. A serious accident to his wife has been the chief canse of his embarrass? ments. His little ship is now under seizure for debt, and an appeal hos been made in London in his behalf. -Of Elliott, Tacker tells this very amusing anecdote. It seems the jovial artist was paint? ing some divine, who felt it incumbent upon j him to sive the painter a moral lecture during ' one of bis sittings. Happily, the State is now united in timent and opinion. Charleston and Cc bia, Edge?eld and Beaufort, are work: the samo end, and all Carolina is thoron aroused to the necessity of wresting State from the hands of the adventi who are now wasting our substance and nianing our fame. The Presidential electors to be nomi ted in the coming Convention will be, hope, our ablest and most popular men. they are early in the field, they will be a to use personal as well as party influen and as the nominees of a Convention which are represented the intelligence < property of every distriot in South Caroli they wilL have a power which cannot possessed by the alien and stranger. We trust that arrangements will promptly made throughout the State the election of delegates to the Conventii and that the necessary meeting will called in this city without any delay. The Daily News. When the proprietors of THE DAILY NE determined to give their readers the chea est, as well as the best, newspaper in t Southern States, by reducing their subscri tion price to six dollars per annum, th also resolved to adhere Btrictly to the ca system, and require, invariably, payme in advance. This 'excited some natui opposition on the'part of the friends of loi cr?dita, but the plan soon became BO pop lar as to add largely to the circulation ai strength of the paper. Encouraged by the liberal patronaj which had so far been extended to thei the proprietors went a step further, and i publishing the names of SEYMOUR ai BLAIR as the nominees of the National Di mocracy for President and Vice-Presiden established club and campaign rates, whic have placed THE DAILY or THE TRI-WEBKL NEWS within the reach of every one of ou citizens. It was a novelty in South Carolina to b able to obtain a first-class -daily Democrati newspaper for six dollars a year, or a tri weekly paper for three dollars a year, but i was a greater wonder stilltwhen the DAIL NEWS, for four months, was offered to club of ten at one dollar and fifty cents a copy or THE TRI-WEEKLY NEWS, for the sam period, at seventy-five cents a copy. Although it is not many days aince ou campaign and club rates were first publish ed, t^e news has spread throughout th? Btate. Clubs for THE DAILY and TRI WEEKLY NEWS are being formed in everj district, and there is every indication thai these papers will soon attain a circulation hitherto unparalleled in the journalistic annals of South Carolina. The proprietors will not decrease theil efforts to improve tho appearance and in? crease the value of THE DAILY and TEI WIBKTJT NEWS. Their enterprise and in? dustry have been well rewarded, and the readers of THE NEWS may rest assured that no pains will be spared to make their paper still more worthy of its position and grow? ing renown. THE FOLLOWING communication appeared in the Mercury of Saturday last : CHARLESTON, S. C., July 24,18g8. To Ute Editor of the Charleston Mercury: A paragraph in your Columbia lotter, pub? lished this morning, reads as follows: "It will interest your readers to know that Denny saya that he and Mr. F. G. DeFoutaine, of THE CHARLESTON DAILY NEWS, are partnera in the Stata Printing, and that DeF. hos an equal interest in it with himselt (Denny.)" I desire to state briefly and emphatically, that the above allegation concerning myself is untrue- ia every respect. THE ATTENDANCE at the regular meetings of the Ward Democratic CluTbs is evidence enough of the rapid growth of the belief that no man should now bc indifferent to politics, or hold himself aloof from al; polit? ical organizations. A week or two ag:: it W&S difficult to persuade enough citizens to go to a ward meeting to make it worthy of the name. Now the meetings arc thronged, and are attended by our most -eubstantlal I and reliable townsmen. THE DEMOCRATIC CEOB of Ward Six, at their meeting on Wednesday, will have the pleasure of hearing an address from the Hon. A. P. ALDRICH, and it is suggested that arrangements be made, if possible, to invite the other Democratic Clubs of Charles? ton to be present on the ocoasion as the guests of the " Banner Ward." The hall of the Washington Engine House would not be large enough to accommodate all the members of the Ward Club, far less would it accommodate the thousands who desire to hear Judge ALDRICH. It is hoped, there? fore, that the President of the Club will arrange for an open air meeting, and invite the Democracy of Charleston to attend. THE BOSTON POST says : M In the South "Carolina Legislature on the 22d, Mr. Ran? dolph, a colored member, introduced a " bill in the Senate prohibiting the making "of any distinction, in cases of law, on "account of race or color. Is this the "Rev. Mr. Randolph who was arrested and "fined for certain indecencies in the street^ " of Charleston a short time since ?" It is the same man. His last exploit, we believe, was to advise the negroes in Orange burg to resoue some prisoners who were in the hands of the Sheriff, and to burn down the village if any resistance was made. This is a specimen " Senator of South Caro? lina." -, .. ^ .. ? FROM Orangeburg, Sumter and Abbeville, we have the good news that refreshing rains have fallen.
