The difficulty of deter? mining the age of the dog is: similar to that experienced by the Provost Marshal Of Norfolk .some time ago, when ordered to kill every ."fourth dog." It. was impossible to tell which ;';V' -was a ,libnrth dog." -A gathering of twerve> or fifteen hundred .Indians was held at Fort Lamed.recently, for the purpose of receiving their annual supplies lj of anns and ammunition. On account of cer .tain depredations committed by . the Cheyen? nes some weeks ago, the-government oirdered tthat no supplies should be issued, and the meeting was broken up in' confusi?n. A great -deal ot discontent exists among the Indians on account of the order, and several acts of hos? tility hire already been perpet ra ted. The mat -ter has not yet boen settled. -Don't advertise, it's, a bad plan. Arrapahoes and Cheyennes,'are becoming very jeatless, and are clamorous for on immediate removal to the new reservation promised them by: tr ea ty. They are beginning to think that the United States Government does not intend to carry out the stipulations of the treaty. Therefore they threaten trouble. Seven hun -died and fifty of the Navajoes were removed recently a distance of nearly three hundred miles. There were three births and only three -deaths daring the nine of the removal. -Tho New York rowdies are notorious for ^heir brutality and impudence. A rang of them, Wednesday night, stopped a horse car .containing a picnic party on the way home, .and maltreated and robbed the passengers ina brutal manner, one individual with a livelier imagination than the others proposing to set .fire to 'the ladies' dresses. He even lighted a -match with the'avowed intent of carrying out this' purpose, when the conductor, who had "previously preserved a condition of masterly inactivity, interposed and prevented its con trammat?onv At this juncture two policemen put in an appearance, at the sight of whom the ruffians decamped. -Cable telegrams - report that-the yield of . scheat iii the United Kingdom exceeds the an rrhsl average. The effects of the drought are moot' disastrous to the drops in parts'of Oana da. In this country the yield is above the ave? rage. The whist crop is finished in nearly all -parts of Indiana, and is decidedly the best they : have had for a long time. Coro, too, promises an exceedingly heavy yield. In Illinois the " yield is very heavy, bat the heat is so intense that all sorts of work has been suspended, .farmers are offering from five to seven dollars for harvest hands, but eau get none at any price. Dispatches from different parts of Iowa ?and Wisconsin represent the crops to be io a very favorable condition. -A fast and handsome young lady of Bel? gium, whose mania is physical culture and a . search for adventure in male attire, but whose .morals are irreproachable, heard that three young bloods had been boasting of her favors and determined upon a characteristic revenge, To each she sent a delicate little note, making s private appointment at the same place half .tm hour apart, They showed the billets with triumph, and came with friends posted near to .witness their success. The first was greeted 'warmly by the young woman with a cudgel, beaten soundly and sent off. The second the -jame, and the third likewise. Each has a phy? sician's bill to pay, and the muscular young 3ady is free to continue her eccentricities with .out fear of slander. -Penn.-y 1 vania avenue, Washington, was the scene of a novel excitement Sunday after? noon. Two men quarrelled, grappled and : struggled like gladiators, until one of them, hy a dextrous piece of strategy, got the other by the hair and punished his opponent's face severely with his kq?es. The victime of the , knee was let loose after some time, when the . ether cried out : '.'Now shoot me, if you dare; . shoot me; I dare you to do it." A pi eat crowa had gathered meanwhile, and the windows of . the hotel were crowded with ladies. The se? verely punished man drew off some distance. palled s pistol from bis pocket and aimed it deliberately at bis opponent. The latter never flinched, but again shouted, "Shoot if you dare i" while the ladies screamed and fainted, and people in the street scattered in every di? rection to avoid the expected ballet. The de? nouement was rather tame. No shot was fired, the pistol man having reconsidered his inten? tion, and the combatants started off in differ? ent directions. CHARLESTON. THURSDAY MORNING, JULY 23,1868. Hampton-Campbell-Slmonton. General HAMPTON has accepted the invi? tation given him by the resident members of the State Central Democratic Committee, and will address the mass ratification meet? ing to be held to-morrow night in front of the Charleston Hotel. It is expected that the Hon. JAMES B. CAMPBELL, the Hun. C. H. SLMONTON, and other leading gentlemen, will also deliver addresses. Charleston is now fairly olive. The ardor and earnestness of the people is increasing day by day, and the meetingQfcf to-morrow shall be one worthy of the Democrats of the State-worthy of the chivalrous and exalted gentlemen who will there give an account of their stewardship-worthy of 1 SEYMOUR and BLATB, our future President and vice-President, and worthy of the National Democratic party, whose doctrines and principles are ours. Thc Mass Sleeting. ' The meeting to be held to-morrow night, at Hibernian Hall, will in a degree test the appreciation of our people of the magni? tude of the contest into which we have en? tered, while it will also measure the nature and character of the, support .that may be I expected to be given to SEYMOUR and BLATB J>y the Democracy of Charleston. ~ This batTleTrpyal between Democrat amd Radical, between SETMOTJK and GBANT, be^' tween BLAIR and COLFAX, must determine whether the great American Union shall be once moro a ieee republic, or whether it shall be ruled by a military dictator and held in subjection by the swords and can? non' of a parti-colored soldiery. It will de? cide between liberty and slavery, between conservatism and revolution, between the law and the sword, bet ween permanent se? curity and licensed violence: and they who fail to see that the downfall of the Democ? racy is the downfall of the State, and there? fore the downfall of every respectable Southern man, will, in years to come, regret that they, did not cheerfully step'to the front when oalled upon to assist in working out th? salvation of their country. There iavao fqar or doubt ou our part that that the mass meeting ot\ to-morrow night will be o-triumphantsuccess. Au enthusiasm is now*being kindled in even the breasts of staid, elderly men,- that gives promise of an active and zealous campaign. The fires of our gallant young- men have melted the j snows of three chilling years, and the liv- ' ing, rushing torrent will - sweep away, like straws, coldness, indifference and neglect. .Merchants and clerks, mechanics and mern- : bers of the learned professions, factors and storekeepers, owners of ' real estate, and those whose only heritage is a strong hand or an active brain, have awakened at the oall of the Democrats of the North; and they have said that South . Carolina shall prove that she can strike one more telling blow for the constitution and the law. They have resolved that the meeting of to-morrow shall show their s'rength. On that day they will first form their ranks. Each man in 'the community will now soon feel that suc? cess may depend on. his personal labor, and then our Democratic host will move and act ss one man, as every man will work and strive as though he were a host. The echoes of the Charleston meeting must be heard throughout the State, for it will rep? resent all that we possess 0/ loyal, honora? ble and true. So it will encourage the down? cast, strengthen the weak, guide the errant and lead the wanderer back to the fold: So it shall be an earnest to the Democracy of the nation that tins once proud State has raised again the banner of liberty, justice and truth. Tbe Hodel Republic. Black wood's Magazine is one of the quick? est in the Old World to detect any vagary or defect in the working of the machinery of the model Republic. But that sharp-eyed periodical only found out in its last or J une number, what we in this quarter of the world have known for years, that the con? stitution is a dead letter. We can only ac? count for its tardy perception of the truth by supposing it was deluded by the balder? dash of the Radical press, which has been making the welkin ring with its glorifica? tions of universal liberty and universal equality. It now sees the matter in its true light. It says : "At the very first strain to which it was "subjected, the beautiful, the symmetrical, "the perfect constitution broke helplessly "down, and is at this moment of no more "binding force upon the American people "than any of the numberless equally beau? tiful and unrevokable constitutions be? stowed upon themselves by the French be? tween 1739 and 1818. * * * "A dominant revolutionary faction haviDg "a majority in both Houses of Congress, "laughs its shreds and remnants to scorn, and '\nake their own decrees do duty in its "stead." In another portion of its article it says : "The constitution provided no punishment "for an act of secession, and the Ko rt hem peo "ple, determining there should be no seces-' "sion and no disruption of the Union, if "force could prevent it, resorted to force, in "defiance of Ike spirit, if not of the letter, of "the written document," Great efforts have been made to pervert the facts and to represent the South as in? itialing force, but Blackwood utters the truth, and what will be the verdict of truth? ful history.
