THE NEW GERMAN LUTHERAN CHURCH.-The

THE YACHT RACE.-Tho committee intrusted
with the duty of collecting subscriptions for
the purchase of a service of plate, to be given
the winning yacht in a race between the con-,
'testants in the last great, race, have obtained
- donations to the amount- of about $250. We
hope lhat the money will be taken up, and the
: race pushed forward without delay.

Two MORE NEW ALDERMEN.-General Canby
has appointed Mr. A. B. Marshall alderman in
place of Dr. G. M. King, who declined, and
Mr. Charles.Yoigt in place of R. H. Cain, who

the firm of Little 2fc Marshall, dealers in agri
?cultural implements and seed. He is a native
of Now York, and was-a Colonel in the United ^
itca army, but since the war has been doing p

I POLICE ITEMS.-On Saturday, in the market,
a young negro fellow named Wm. Price en?
deavored to abstract a portmonaie from a lady's
: pocket. He was seen by his intended victim,
who grasped his arm and held him until ar?
rested by the detectives. , ?
Andrew Jackson (colored) wa8 arrested by th?
.detectives, on Saturday, for breaking into the
office of Mr. Marshall s wharf, and stealing
.sails, money, shoes, Ac. The "articles were
mostly recovered.
A. Brown (colored) was arrested for breaking
into the house of Mr. W. W. Jonee, No. 1 Is?
lington court, and stealing clothing, winch has
been recovered. j ?<
HenryWashington (colored) was arrested for
burglariously entering the house of Mr. H.
Leiding, at the' corner of Gibbs and Legare
. streets. A Dumber of valuable articles were
recovered and thc thief locked up.
The store of Mr. Burckmyor, on East Bay, st
was broken into on Friday night, and robbed
-of coffee, sugar, lard and other groceries. The ka
'detectives are now on the track, and the guilty yo
?parties will soon be in limbo. Nc
SUNDAY SCHOOL CELEBBATION.- The Sunday
School of the Wentworth Street Lutheran
Church celebrated ita anniversary yesterday.
There was a large attendance of the parents and
friends of the children, and the church was
crowded to its utmost capacity. A portion of
the exercises consisted of speeches from the
boys. These were well delivered, and the young
orators deserved th9 commendations they re?
ceived. Mr. John B. Martin, the Superintend?
ent, read his annual report, from which it ap?
pears that there are 150 names on the roll and
120 regular attendants with 18 teachers. Ad?
dresses were made by the Bev. W. S. Bowman,
Rev. John A. Thompson, and others. At the
close premiums were distributed. '
"-BAND TOURNAMENT.-One of the grandest
tournaments of these degenerate days took
place at Laurensville on the second of July.
Thirty-two knights were mustered, and the tilt?
ing closed-with the following result: pham
pion A. M. Copeland, "Turkish Sultan;" seven
rings -time 25$ seconds. 2. Champion J. H. Y.
Willama, "Knight of Clinton;'' six rings-time
24$ seconds. 3. Champion J. V. C. Fleming,

4. Champion J. J. Flynn, "Viscount de Blaye
six ringa-time 27 seconds. The following e

were: 1. A flue saddle. 2. A silver-mounted
lance. 3. A fine bridle. 4. A pair of fine spurs
About two thousand persons were present, and
at least five hundred vehiolea were ou the
ground. The pleasures of the day were con
eluded by a ball, whioh waa a brilliant affair.
THE NEW BUILDING AT THE COEN EB OF MEET
DIG AND CUMBERLAND STBEETS.-The timbers
for the ground floor of thia edifioe are now on
the spot, and as the foundations are complete
and the workmen and materials ready, the
walla will at once begin to rise from the sur?
face. The new building will be L shaped and
will ocoupy the en'ire lot. That portion fro:
ing.on Meeting and Cumberland streets will
be two stories in height, the upper being
large hall well ventilated and admirably suited
for societies. The r?ar of the building will be
but one Btory high, and the entire ground floor
will be used by Mesara. Cameron & Barkley
in their business. It was expected at one
time that the Masons would use the upper
stories, and aa elaborate plan waa designed
but the Fraternity have since decided not to
move from their preasnfc location, and Messrs
Cameron & Barkley will erect a more unpre

and now that a beginning has been made, let
us hope that the sad hiatus in Meeting street
wiU be rapidly filled up, and. that those active
and enterprising architects, the Messrs
Devereaux, may have their hands full, a .id
