A NUISANCE.-The smouldering fire in Meet
. ing-street, opposite the Charleston Hotel, like
Banquo's ghost, win not down at a bidding.
From some cause it burst ont afresh yesterday,
. and the smoke was drifted by the wind into the
lobby of the hotel, canning the eyes of the

'"seen" several men in a quirter of an hour.

..Charleston, belonging to the line of which
Messrs. James Ad ger ?Co. are agents, left
this harbor on Saturday afternoon last for New
?York, with a full assorted cargo of cotton,
fruits, vegetables, naval stores, Ac. Among
- the prominent articles on her freight list were
1416 boxes peaches, 6S4 crates vegetables, 580
barrels potatoes, 427 bales cotton, navalstorea,
Ac. The Charleston had also a crowded pas
sergor list. The flattering character of this
patronage, which is taking place at a season
when great dullness may be generally expected,
. -most be most gratifying to her agents here.
THE Sours CAROLINA DELEGATION IN NEW
'TOBE.-The New York Evening News, of Fri?
day last, says : "Only about half of this dele?
gation has reported at the headquarters, No.
-' 37 Union Square, this morning. Senator Camp?
bell, Gov. Perry and Speaker Simonton had al?
ready arrived, and Gen. Wade Hampton was to
arrive this evening. No meeting of the dele?
gation has therefore taken place. Either Gen.
.Hampton or Senator Campbell will be chair?
man or the delegation. An informal conference
among the members this .morning elicited the
opinion that South Carolina should cast first a
-complimentary vote for Andrew Johnson, and
afterward go for Hendricks, of Indiana."
A JACK ra OEFIQE.-At Orangeburg there is
a sergeant in the United States Army com?
manding a detachment of soldiers. He is
somewhat pert and dandified in manner, and
yesterday aa the down Columbia train came in
a citizen named Fraser asked a bystander how
he liked the appearance of the sergeant. No
reply was made, bat the question was reported
"to the three-striped jack in .office who marched
op to Mr. Fraser and asked him what he
meant. Mr. Fraser said that he had not
. spoken to the three-striped, who thereupon
Bunched forth a cuss word, said he would not
-allow any on? to talk about him, and sent a
messenger fora file of soldiers to take Fraser
into custody. At this time the train moved on
and the result is not known. Did the Com?
mandant at Colombia send the sergeant to

THE FOURTH IX CHARLESTON.-The. weather
on Saturd&r waa all that the most ardent lover
of the pomp and parade incidental to the itu
of July could have desired. At an early hour
the streets were thronged with the members
of the different (colored) Republican organiza?
tions hastening to their rendezvous at the foot
of Meeting-street. Refreshment stands were
scattered all along the route of the procession,
but the porch of St. Michael's Church and the
vicinity of the Citadel Green were the most
popular places. The old maumas were in their
glory, and their cakes, comfits, beer and soda
water were eagerly purchased by the hungry
and thusly crowd. The bells rang joyously as
in days of yore, and the different public build?
ings and the shipping flung their bunting lib?
erally to the breeze.
The procession, including about ?00 persons
in all, moved from the Battery, about half-past
8 o'clock. The participants were all colored,
with the exception of seven white meu;
Cooper Bird und F. C. Hiller, white, being two
of the mrshals of the day. Lafayette C.
Woolie and -Davis, both white, were the
banner guard of the Bepublican Club of Ward
i. The following was the order of the proces?
sion, which was headed by music:
Ashley Fire Company, No. 9, Comet Fire
Company, No. 5, Promptitude Fire Company,
No. 7, Niagara Fire Company, No. 8, St. John's
Evangelist Society, Mechanic Association, St.
Peter's Society, Moral Friendship Club, Dray?
men Benevolent Society, Sympathetic Society,
Union Assembly, Mutual Aid Society, Young
Men's Charitable Association, St. Paul's Socie?
ty, Grand Army of the Republic, Unity and
Friendship Club, Friendly Union Club, Broth
er?y Union Association, Union Lodge, No. 22,
Drayton Lodge, Hayden Lodge, Sikener Lodge,
Fire Company No. 6, Fire Company No. 4, Afri?
can Turners.
Two stands had been erected on the Citadel
Green and covered with awnings to ward c ff |
the rays cf the sun. The Citadel was tastefully
decorated with United States flags, and the
sidewalks in the vicinity of the green lined
with booths and refreshment stands, which
were presided over by African dames. Lar
comb, of ice cream fame, had a stand on the
green, between the speakers' stands, and his
cooliug compounds'met a ready sal?. On ar?
riving at the green the procession entered
throng h the south gate, and was marched and
countermarched around the speakers' stands
and finally assigned positions in that vicinity.
The crowd which had kept up with the pro?
cession then surged in the gates and closed
around the stands. But few white persons
were present, and the speakers' remarks were
addressed to a steaming mass of black hu?
manity.
Stand No. 1, which was nearest Calhoun
street, w.as presided over by G. Pillsbury as
chairman, who opened the ball by a few re?
marks and introduced the speakers.
At this stand the Declaration of Independ?
ence was read by a colored min, resolutions
commendatory of the Republican party, and
endorsing the nominations of the Chicago Con?
vention, were read by Mr. Sawyer, who after- |
ward spoke at some length on the same topic.
He was followed by s General Pierce (white),
J.J.Wright (colored), H. Judge Moore andi
others. M. H. Collins, the irrepressible fugle?
man of Pillsbury, closed the list of distinguish?
ed orators. ~\
At stand No. 2, Marshal Epping presiding, a
prayer was offered by T. D. Lewis (white), and
the Declaration of Independence was read by
-Howard (colored). The same resolutions
were then read by -- Holmes (white), and
the speakers introduced by the chairman. D.
T. Corbin, U.S. District Attorney, was the first
speaker.
J. H. Jen ks, the late delegate to the Chicago
Convention, gave an account of his steward?
ship. - H a jue (colored) then spoke, and was
followed by Colonel E. W. Dennis, Judge Ad?
vocate of the Second Military District. The
speech of Colonel Dennis was, in sc me respects,
the most remarkable, and certainly the most
elaborate, delivered on thc occasion. He re?
viewed the policy of South Carolina in the past,
villifying her people, ber customs and her laws.
These he contrasted with the peculiar bless?
ings conferred upon the State by the favor "of
God, of Abraham Lincoln and of Yankee bayo?
nets," closing with a fulsome panegyric of the
career of General Sickles while commander of |
this district. The motive of this latter portion
of his address is said to have puzzled more
than one of the white Republicans who were
present.
Colonel Dennis was followed by Colonel Wil?
lard, Robert Small (colored), Sam Dickenson
(colored), Proctor (colored), and Paris Wil?
liams, "the barber" (colored). General Pierce
then came to this stand, and made the closing
remarks. At twelve o'olock a salute of thirty
seven guns, one for every State in the Union,
including the unreconstructed, was fired from
the Citadel, and a new garrison flag was run up
the staff which had until that moment been
bare. The speaking was concluded a few
minutes past oue, and the different associa?
tions were dismissed to th jir several muster
grounds. The day passed very quietly, and
beyond the fuss and feathers incident to the
parade, there was no disturbance or any
breach of the peace. During the day the bells
of St. Michael's raijg out merrily, and
many old rehs were surprised to hear,
among other airs, the sweet notes of the
Bonnie Blue Flag floating on the breeze.
In the afternoon the steamer St. Helena with
an excursion party on board neared the Bat?
tery and the band struck up tho Bonnie Blue
Flag, which was cheered lustily by a crowd of
colorad men on the East Battery. All places of
business were closed during the day, and the
streets wen thronged with dusky faces until
nightfall, when thii refreshment stands were
removed and thc holiday closed. There were
but few cases of drunk, though the barrooms
were all open and the victimsof Bacchus' wiles
were not so gloriously high as to bring them
nnder the care of the police. Not a single
arrest during the day speaks volumes for the
manner in which Charleston enjoyed the
4th' of July.
THE DERELICT SHEP MONTGOMERY.-This ship
which while on her passage from Pensacola to
Cork for orders, became water-logged and aban?
doned, and which was successfully towed, in a
sunken condition, by the steamship Charles?
ton, of the New York line, from a_poiat off the
coast of North Carolina to this Hfe and which
has been off this harbor over two weeks, was
successfully brought up to the city ou Satur?
day evening by the steamers Relief, Captain
Payne, and Pilot Boy, Captain McNeity. The
Montgomery's detention outside the port wis
caused by her extra draft, say about twenty
one feet, which was somewhat decreased when
the water was pumped out and by the removal
of the deck load; but she was still too deep to.
safely cross the bar, and Captain Ferguson,
who was in charge, successfully removed her
b:w port and took out sufficient timber to les?
sen her depth to about eighteen feet and sev?
enteen feet forward, and she was towed up to
port in this trim. The steamer Relief, Captain
Payne, was daily employed in bringing up the
cargo of the ship to the city as it was removed,
and notwithstanding that the weather was
sometimes rough, but a small part of the tim?
ber got ?ulrifc. The Montgomery loaka about
three feet each twenty-four hours, but the
water is speedily removed by the pump now in
use.

The Mammoth Sign on East Bay.-In a
note from our fiiend. the Superintendent of the
Lighthouse ou Sullivan^ Island (with whom
weare in regular correspondence), he says:
"As I was just now filling mv lamp, I waa
?leased to see that the old Trench' Coffee
[ouse, where we have drunk many a- sherry
cobbler, has been reopened. The inscription,
however, on the mammoth sign, which I can
read at this distance with the naked eye-'THE
DAiLr NEWS'-is certainly a very curious one
for a restaurant." We at once wrote back to
our island fri?nd to undeceive him, informing
bim of the removal of our sister from Hs ne
street to East Bay; and, moreover, we told him
that henceforth "neither sherry cobblers nor
cocktails will be retailed in that locality. To
be sure, we do not wish to be understood as
making an affidavit to this effect. In fact, we
mean to test the matter before long, and then
inform our lighthouse friend whether or not
the Coffee Bouse still maintains its pristine
reputation for good mixed pot.
FATAL ACCIDENT IN THE HABBOB.- On Satur?
day morning, July 4, Captain Holland, attach?
ed to the outer light ship off this port, with
Hr. Charles Beecher, au officer of the Cus?
toms, and Mr. Thompson, were at the quaran?
tine schooner near Sullivan's Island, and
bound ont to the light ship in one of her boats.
The pilot boat Mystery waa standing by them,
bound out to sea. Thinking to save time and
labor, Captain Holland, with the parties above
mentioned, got into the row boat and pulled
rapidly after the Mystery, expeclicg to take
passage in her to the light ship. The Mystery
was shootiug ahead with good speed, and had
her skiff towing astern by a line. The row
boat had reached a point abreast this skiff,
when Captain Holland and Mr. Beecher, think?
ing to facilitate their reaching the pilot boat,
palled up to the skiff, which was nearer to
them than tbe pilot boat, when, as they ap?
proached sufficiently close, Captain Holland
and Mr. Beecher jumped from their boat into
the skiff, when the latter took a broad sheer,
capsizing, and throwing overboard both
Beecher'and Holland. Beecher succeeded in
getting on the Mystery without injury, but
Holland, who was soon picked up by one of
the ooats, and was said to be alive when taken
out of the water, expired immediately on be?
ing placed in the boat. His body was brought
to the city by the pilot boat Mystery, and an
inquest held, which resulted in a verdict of
accidental death.
THE MATCH GAME OF BASE BALL AT SAVAN?
NAH.-The members of the Alert Base Ball
Club returned on the steamer Fannie last
night from their excursion to Savannah. They
speak in glowing terms of the heartiness of ?
their reception. They were welcomed on the
arrival of the boat ut Savannah by a commit?
tee of the Forest City Club, escorted to and
from the scene of contest in omnibuses, and
entertained by a handsome supper at the
Screven House. In company with their an?
tagonists of the Forest City, they were photo?
graphed and afterward partook of champagne
and. punch at the Metropolitan Bi lb ard Boom.
The result of the match was the victory of the
Forest City Club by a score of 27 to 16-quite
a disappointment to our gallant Alerts, who
were confident of doing better. The game oc?
