AN ODD FISH.-Oar readers have recently
bad a full description bf the clam cracker who
waa taken from tho watery depths of Charles?
ton Harbor, and although those that go down
to the sea in ships are expected to be conver?
sant .with all marine monsters, they often find
that there are more things in Heaven and
earth that are dreamed of in their philosophy.
Some savant while experimenting on animal
magnetism, found that ty preparing paper in
a certain way, it could be made to follow the
pulsations of the heart. For the benefit ol
those curiously inclined the inventor has cut
.his strips of paper in the shape of small nab,
which are colored in imitation of nature.
Some of the lobby members of the Charles?
ton Hotel were on Sunday the fortunate
possessors of a few of these pisca toral
magnets, and displayed their wonderful work?
ing to a gaping crowd. The rain kept th? hu?
merons visitors in doors, arid though the idea
of paper being endowed with life was decidedly
fishy, yet the scoffers were soon convinced.
The modus operandi WAS to moisten the palm
of the hand, and then placing the paper fish
thereon, it wmld writhe itself in various ways,
though invariably following the pulsations of
the wrist. The magnetic fish is intended as a
toy for juveniles, bnt it is a scientific problem
that will interest older and wiser heads. The
'Beeret remains with the inventor, and only a
low specimens have thus far reached this be?
nighted ee?tioo.
ANOTHER F TBE_For more than tbxeemonthB
onr city has be?n spared the visitations of the
fire domon, but tho fiends who act as his
agents could no longer remain quiet. Yester?
day we chronicled a large fire which occurred
on Satur lay night (the probable act of an in?
cendiary), and the embors were still smoulder?
ing when the alarm was again sounded and
another fire discovered within a stone's throw
of the first. The time was woll chosen, as few
porsons wore in the strool, and the fiamos
hui some headway before the alarm was
sounded. The-fire originated in the second
story of the store lately occupied by
Messrs. Dowie & Moiso, and the flames
burnt some timo beforo sufficient smoke
was raised to create au alarm. At first the
pell struck only the number of the ward, but,
as the flames increased, the genoral alarm was
sounded, calling out the entire Fire Depart?
ment. The flames soon spread to the building
on the south occupied by Messrs. Goodrich &
Win em an as a wholesale drug store, and, from
the inflammable nature of the stock, it required
tho utmost exertions of the firemen to prevent
the fire from spreading. From the sudden?
ness of the alarm and the rapidity with which
tho flames seized upon the houses it was fonnd
impossible to save much of the stock, and per?
sons living in the vicinity packed up their mo?
vables instanter. Messrs. E. J. Dawson & Co.
removed their stock of books to the Charleston
Hotel porch and to some of the adjoining
houses. Messrs. Dewing,- Burkett & Co. also
prepared to move. At one time it seemed
as if tho entire block of buildings
was doomed to .destruction, and every effort
was made to secure the removal of valuables,
in case such a proceeding should be necessary.
The two atores burnt were only separated by a
party wall, but a narrow alley way ran between
them and the store occupied by E. J. Dawson &
Co. The wall of this alley fell inward crushing
out the flames and materially assisting the fire?
men in their efforts to subdue the fire. It was
remarked by some of the oldest members of the
department that it was one of the hottest,
fieiceat fires they bad known. It burnt stead?
ily until after daylight, and was only subdued
through the strenuous exertions of the fire?
men. -Prom the nature of the Btocks it was
impossible to save more than a few articles.
Messrs. Goodrich & Wineman saved several
barrels " of turpentine that were stowed
in the rear of their store, bnt their en?
tire -stock may be eaid to have boon
destroyed. Mesara. Dowie A Moise had
moved to tho corner above only a few weeks
previous, but hada few articles still remaining.
A' barrel ot alcohol anda cask of copperas were
saved, but the remainder were burnt. Messrs;'
E. J. Dawson & Cb; removed their stock, as
was stated, but suffered some loss by the move,
|nd .moro 'still by smoke and water. Messrs.
Dewing, Burkett A Co. was also damaged, but
both! the stock and building were covered by
insurance. The store - occupied by Messrs.
Goodrich & Wineman was owned by Dr.
Strohecker, and waa .irra ur od for. $10,000 in
Northern agencies. ' Their stock was insured
as follows : Agern-y of Colourn A Howell, $7000;
S. Y. Tupper, 16000; W. B. Heriot * Go., $5500;
Z. B. Oakes, $5000; J. L> Honour, $2500. Total,
$25,000. Their stock was valued at from
?28,000* to $30,000. The store formerly
occupied by Dowie & Moise' was own?
ed by Mr. H. F. Stroheoker, and was
uninsured- Messrs. Dowie A Moise lost about
S500, also uninsured. Mosers. E. J. Dawson A
Co. were insured for $10,000, and the store,
whioh was owned by Mr. C. O. Strohecker, was
insured for $10,000, both in Northern agencies
of Col bu rn A Howell, J. D. Ford and others.
The fire was. still smouldering yesterday
morning, but it was not thought that anything
of value- could be dmr out. Among the losses
were a eunice assortment of European drugs
and chemicals, imported by thc firm of Good?
rich, Wineman & Co. These gentlemen are
QC dismay ed by the destruction of their proper?
ty, aud will continue to havo orders tilled pre?
paratory to recommencing business at an early
day.'
' The scenes in tho Charleston Hotel during
tho early progress or the fire ware to outsiders
interesting in the extreme. At least fifteen ol
the prettiest frilled nightcaps iu ibis city, of
beautiful women, were visible to the naked eye,
and the lovely faces they encircled looked just
onough frightened to be intensely attractive,
rhe alarm among the inmate? was very con?
siderable. One gentleman we wot of was die
covered in an extraordinary tram o of ?mind,
pulling two family trunks down stairs, attar
whioh he made a bee-line for the Battery.
Major Horbach was prompt in adopting meas?
ures of protection and allaying excitement.
Last night the presence of the band on the
portico made ono forget all that bad passed.
Oms OF THE SIGNS or THE TiKEs may bo
Been at the corner of Hasel and Mooting
street, on the building now occupied by Messrs.
Dowie A Moise, wholosale druggists, lt is
appropriately formed of a large golden mortar
on a beautiful shaded, background, the name
of the firm standing out in bold lettering.
The sign was painted by Mr. C. W. Stiles,
whose brush has boen a powerful agent in re?
storing the animated appear anco of our busi?
ness thoroughfares. Being placed upon the
omer of two prominent Btreets, tho mammoth
mortar attraota universal attention, and the
friends of Messrs. Dowie & Moise will have no
difficulty in finding their uew establishment.
THE BOOSTER.-Captain Black, of tho Mag?
gie Mitchell, yosterday afternoon capped the
climax of his aquatic performances by pre?
senting to the Messrs. Marsh, of the Ella Anna,
?i huge flag bearing upon it tho shape ol a
stately rooster in the act of a lusty crow, rhe
ceremony took place off the Battery, where
both yachts, with parties of cc.tlemon on
board properly primed, participated iu tho
bibul at orv festivities of the occasion.
The affair waa brief and sailor-like. The
Maggie ranged alongside of the Ella, the flag
was lowered, devotionally folded, received amid
sundry salutations and run to the peak of the
winning boat At least one exobange of liquid
feu de-joie took place, when the boals separat?
ed and engaged in a friendly sail togolher up
and down the river and around tho barb r.
The kind feeling existing between tho owners
of tho several craft aud tho spirit of friendly
competition which exists is worthy of all praise,
and such tokens of mrtiml admiration as were
exhibited yesterday are in themselves the best
"promissory notes" that can bo given in behalf
of tho success of the season.
THE DUELLO REVIVED-A PUGILISTIC! EN?
COUNTER AT THE FO?B MILE HOOSE BETWEEN
TWO EMPLOYEES OF THE FREEDMAN'S BUREAU.
Some time last week two members of that
happy family, the Freedman's Bureau, forgot
the precepts inculcated by "Watta" in his "Di?
vino Hymns,' and "let .thoir angry passions
rise." A wordy debate ensued, which in?
flamed one of the irate Bureau gentry to such
an extent that be instantly challenged his con?
frere to settle the difficulty by an appeal to
gunpowder. This, however, was not to the
taste of the Bureau man, who had no desire to
seek the bubble reputation at the pistol's
mouth; but being tho challenged party ai.d
having the "hoice of weapons, he decided that
they should rely simply on bone and sinew,
and settle the dispute vi el amis. It was so
agreed, and the Four Milo House was
chosen as the battlo ground, the combatants
to light with nature's weapons--fiais. Se?
conds were chosen, and on the day appointed,
the belligerents met, clinched and fought.
Greek had met Greek, and for eome time tho
tup ef war wa3 even; but brawn ?nd muscle
told at last, ami after several rounds, in which
both had been severely punished, the eponge
was thrown up, and thc victor awarded the
palra. Carriages were i'i waiting, and tho he?
roes of the prize ring were borno back, with
bruises but nubrokou bones, to the bosom of
their families. Vinegar, raw beef, and other J
appliances known to professors of the manly
art, were used to allay the pain and reduce the
swellings; bat like Banqao's ghost they would
not down, and the discomfited, disgusted and
discolored fighters were forced to present
themselves at the Bureau with faces some what
tho worse for wear. Their singular appear?
ance occasioned comment, and upon the facts
becoming known, the disoiples of the prize
ring were politely informed that their fur?
loughs were indefinitely extended, and that
tho Bureau was no longor ia noed of their ser?
vices, it being conducted solely on a peace
basis.
