ITEMS.-The varions individu?is ; arrested for voting "early and often" were brought before the Mayor yesterday morning^ and turned .over to the military. An enterprising individual, who had used the name of some citizens unlawfully, and endeavored to obtain some merchandise on a .forged draft, was referred to a magistrate for prosed cutten. THE'HOUSE OF CORRECTION.-There are few -of the city buildings that are kept in better order or more useful than the old workhouse, in its present -transformed condition. Since its has been used as _ .a house of correction, it has tarnished accommoda - -tioas to numbers of the offenders against the city laws. It ls by no means an abode of idleness, ipr the .inmates are compelled to earn their bread by tho sweat of their brow, and their labor ls made useful to the community. The improved state of the city morals has prevented it from becoming a popular resort, but those whose Ul fortuno compelled them to board ont their fines, have had no reason to com? plain. The entire building is kept scrupulously clean by the labor of the prisoners. A floor is ae . signed to each .?ex, and they are employed either is - cracking stones or grinding corn, the latter being rak.'U on toU, and ground in any way that may be de. sired. The 1 ouse of correction has bees organized under the direction of Mayor Cogswell, aud will always be a permanent benefit to the city and a ter? ror to all evil doers. ELECTION FRAUDS ON JOHN'S ISLAND.-We learn from Mr. Jno. L. McDermat, the manager of .the election precinct on John's Island, that the color? ed voters were extremely obstreperous and noisy in their denunciations of any one who refused to vote the Republican ticket for Sheriff- The polls were opened at the headquarters on the Townsend place, aud the colored Republicans foi med themselves in a a liae and examined every ticket that was polled, pre At venting many Conservatives from voting. A large number who desired voting the Hastie or Sigwald ticket were mobbed and forced to leave the ground. There were about seven hundred and sixty-three votes polled, of which a large number were for Mr Hastie, but the opposition dirplsyedby the Republi? cans was to manifest, and so many persons were pre? vented from voting, that Mr. McDermothas deposited .the box at (he Citadel, sealed, and has entered a pro? test against the election. At Wadmalaw Island, as 'afore stated, the oppos' don" of the Republicans was such as to lead them to o T er turn the box, throw away the obnoxious ballots, and brickbat the managers. THE NEW COUNCIL.-Whatever may be thought of the new City Council, it is certainly a subject of congratulation that those of the original members who have been retaineefnot only represent so lar?e a share cf the ability ol' the former Board, but possessed the moral courage to resist all efforts made to in due o them to resign. At the inaugural meeting held on Tuesday night last. Alderman Hon- ; ow was perhaps unavoidably absent; but Aldermen Olney sad Whllden were ibth in their places, and it waa plainly evident to die observer tiiat they com- ? manded from their new colleagues a respect that is 1 always paid to experience, judgment and capacity. I Nor did the address, so frankly made by Alderman I Whilden in behalf ol Alderman Olney and himself, 1 diminish this sentiment ot kindly regard. A fine market farm, containing about four and one-fifth acres, situated in Hester and Simons streets, near the Hace Course, for $1380. A building lot at the corner of Calhoun, Mill and Lucas streets, measuring forty-five feet front, by one hundred feet, for $025. The case ol Caroline Carson vs. Robertson, Ball k McBurney etaL, was argued yesterday morning by General James Simons, oL the firm of Simons k Si? mons, solicitors for Mr. Ball, EdwardMcCraJy, Esq., for Mr. McBurney, and A. G. Magrath, Esq., for complainant. The arguments ocenpiel the atten? tion of the court yesterday and will be resumed to? day. The case is one of great Importance, and will probable be carried up to the Supreme Court of the United States. THE ELECTION EXOTTEMEBT.-The election returns published yesterday created some excite? ment in the city, as few had supposed the Republican majority would be so large. Ihe open frauds that were committed induced many of the Conservatives to estera protest against the election, and it was for? warded to General Canby. The grounds taken were that the ballot boxes bad been tampered with, voters were prevented -rom exercising their franchise, and fraudulent uses had been made of the ballot box by some of the managers. The fact that a pro? test had been entered was generally known on the streets yesterday, and it was the subject of much debate among those interested, but their fa<th in any action from headquarters that would tend to vitiate the election was not abiding. The streets were comparatively deserted, and the whole community were evidently In a relapsed state. C., June 1, 1868. To the Editor of the Daily News : At the last meeting of thc Sixth Ward Club, it was resolved, that a committee of five should walt os the chairmen of thc other wards and invite them to thorough organization. This has the ring of the true metal. It is hoped that the eight wards, when formed into clubs, will elect delegates to a central club, with authority to call mass meetings, propose resolutions, and to concen? trate and direct the party as exigency may require. Let the name, style and firm be "Demo, retie," not "Conservative." Ihe hour of subterfuge and com? promise bas struck. The name is a tower of I strength, and aounds like an alarm bell in the hearts ol the people. With eight ward clubs and a central club, an undivided front will challenge lespect, and the conscious tread of an united people will bc heard once more in the desperate charge to save the virtue, honor "nd fortunes of the country. Wo will hear no m. .-e of packed meetings of one or two hundred, unlawfully called by ono or two indi? viduals, passing decrees disguise:! as resolutions, and virtually authorizing oue mau to appoint the representatives of thu people. And these things are done in the green tree, without remonstrance, without protest and with tame submission. If there be a cardmal political doctrine which every man should believe and enforce against the "divine right-* of kings and the Infernal wrong of aristocracy, it is that all just authority is derived from the people-that to discuss political questions and elect directly their representatives is "thc undoubted privilege ol' the good people of these realms," as well os their best ornsmeut and guard ; and any c'.iquc or clan, or set of men., however reputed for shrewdness or abil? ity, who ensnare the ign rance or poverty of their fellow clt zcns and swindle them of their political in? heritance, are guilty of high treason against thc ho? best prerogative of liberty and the best interests of society. Eternal vigilance is thc price, and thc masse? Who "dress so mean and eat the lean, Int?'ead of the fat oi the eirth," may as well take matters in their own hands, elect just whom they please in their ward organiza? tions, and demand that their voice bc heard and obeyed. They must stamp out this insolent oue-mau power, this arrogant committee business, this mise? rable relic of polities'! slavery.
