A large audience of the parents and friends were pr?sent, and the school itself was ont to the number of one hundred and fif? ty. The singing vas really delightful. It was not only hearty, but the pieces chosen were most appropriate and were rendered with an accuracy and propriety quito surprising. The Sunday School agent delivered a touching and impressive address from Psalms 127,8; "Lo, children are an heritage of the Lord." Hence they were quite dismayed at the Mayor's edict, but suc? ceeded in obtaining its revocation upon a pledge that they would be responsible for any disorder. THE INTERNATIONAL SCH?TZENFEST.-A New York letter, dated the 22d inst., says: "The Germans are making great preparations for the great International Sch?tzenfest which com? mences here on the 25th or June next. The fete will last for a couple of weeks, and will be, in all respects, one of the most imposing ever witnessed cn this side of the Atlantic Old Europe, as well as young America, will be re? presented, and though the German spirit will permeate the whole, there are indications already that the native population will enter into the hilarity of tbe occasio- with quite as mach earnestness as tbe onfldren of the Fatherland. The Americans are a hard-work? ing people, a prey to perpetual mental excite? ments of one Mad and another,- and if the Germans can orly popularize among us their annual out-door exercises, it would do them a world of good, physically, morally, intellec? tually, and every other way." ; THE BESTJLT OP THE INVESTIGATION IN THE CASE OP MAJOR LEE.-The following official communication gives the result of the delibe? rations of the military commission recently convened in Columbia, for the purpose of in? quiring into charges of cruelty against Major Lee, Superintendent of the State Peniten? tiary : HEADQUABTIBS, 2D MILITARY DISTRICT, ) CHABLESTON, S. Sra-I am1 instructed by the Major-General Commanding tc inform you that the special commission appointed by Special Orders No. GO [par. iv.], of March 12,1868. to examine into and report upon the charges of cruel and harsh treatment of convicts, preferred against ThoB. B. Lee, Superintendent of the Penitentiary of South Carolina, has reported that the charges of cruel and harsh treatment made against him are unfounded, and they regard the ad? ministration of Thomas B. Lee, as Superin? tendent of the South Carolina Penitentiary, as humane and efficient. This finding has been approved by the Com? manding General, who directs that no further action be taken upon the petition for your re? moval. Very renpectfullv. Your obedient servant, LOUIS V. We were mistaken, on Saturday, In saying that the belt was the only article waiting;to com? plete the fireman's 'outfit, offdred as-a prize at the approaching Fair. We had overlooked a very important item, namely, the uniform. This deficiency was at once discovered, and immediately supplied by the fireman's tailor, Mr. William Matthiessen, corner Sing' and Wentworth streets.. Mr. W. is prepared, to take the measure for this uniform as. soon as the successful company shall determine who is to wear it. The long experience of this gen? tleman in this branch of his art is sufficient guarantee that the uniform will be unexcep? tionable both in material'and finish/ The con? test for the 'possession bf this valuable prize promises to be. very spirited. BETHEL CHUB CH SUNDAY SCHOOL.-The an? niversary exercises of this school were cele? brated yesWday afternoon. The church, was crowded, and there was a rall attendance of the pupils. The exercises were opened with the hymn "A year again has passed away," which was sung by the school in concert. Dr. T. 8. Sargent then led in prayer, after which the -report of the superintendent waa read, showing a total of two hundred and sixty-two childi on and thirty-six teachers and officers, which was an increase over last year of one hundred and seventy-two scholars- and fifteen' teachers. The school is in a flourishing con? dition, and the mterest manifested by the chil? dren is unabated. At the conclusion of the. superintendent's report another hymn waa sung,, and. an ^address to . parente- deliv? ered by Master Hamlin Fairchild, and one. to children by Master Frank Mucken fuss. The j joung orators acquitted themselves well The address to the children was particularly good, I and if it were not for the sacredness of the building, would have teen received with ap? plause. Another hymn, "Who shall sing if not the children ?" was sung lustily by the little band. Prizes, consisting of religious booka, beautifully embellished, were distributed by the pastor, Ber. J. T. Wightman. These prizes numbered one hundred and thirty-three for the larger children, and forty-eight for the ' infant class, and were awarded for regular attend? ance,-perfect lessons, and the largest amount of money collected. - Those given to the infant class consisted cf illustrated scripture cards. In our judgment Henry Cobia is that man, a citizen of unblemished character, upon whom every decent white man and respectable colored man could unite. Let him be the nominee, and he is our Mayor. The history of life insurance scarcely tarnishes a parallel of so great success in the first year of any company.
