a stror-,; upward tendency to the market, and our
closing rr.!-.'-: to day ure in all cases in advance ol'
the rates Of Saturday las:. The highest prices were
not in every iup'.ar-.ce maintained to the close, and
the tone of thc market last nuht was somewhat weak.
This was caused by the rapidity of the advance of
thc early ?crt of thc week, and a feeling that holdere
might be tempted to throw their stocka on the mar?
ket with thc hope of getting in at lower rates when
money became tighter.
In South Carolina Railroad Securities transactions
have been numerous, and the market was very buoy?
ant. Stock has advanced twelve dollars, Sis Per
Cent. Bonds seven dollar?, and Seven Per Cents
about three dollar?.
Charleston City Stock has advanced nine dollars,
and the Fire Loan Bonds five dollars. City Bills
close at 97.
State Bond? (old) are firmer at an advance of two
do lar?, and steck ha? advanced four dollars.
Bille Receivable have been in active demand, and
are quoted ut Si, or au advance of three dollars.with
an upward tendency.
People's Bank and First National Stock are better,
and Northeastern Railroad Certificates have moved

[FOB THE WEES ENDING THCESDAY, MASCH 12.]
COTTON.-This article, with an occasional slight
decline, which appears only to indicate a conting
greater advance, hes had a strong upwatd tendency
during most of the week, the rates improving 2@
2*?c. $ lt., factors having a strong belief in the
maintainance of prices, based on the light stocks at
the great points of consumption, and the general re?
ports from the intericr, which indicate that the crop
is mostly to market On the first day of the week
quotations here somewhat lowered in consequence
of a slight iaUiug off in rates at New York, and Mid?
dling Upland was quoted at 22??@23c., advancing to
233;2|)C., receding to 25@25>i, and closing yesterday
at 25?25}<c fl lb. nominal for this quality.
? The staple at Liverpool during most of the time
bas been firm, active, and even excited, the rates,
which opened at 9J?d. to 9?id. for Middling Upland,
have had a disposition to harden, having improved
to lO^fSjlO.^d. rb-, closing yesterday rather weak,
while at New York price? commenced on the first of
the week at 23, weakened to 24.^?25, stiffened to
25>i(&2G, and receJed to 25(3,25^, closing yesterday
at 23c. fb. for New York Middling.
The general expectation here of a rise in value has
caused a speculative feeling which much of the time
keeps quotations at this point above what the giving
rates of Liverpool would warrant, while the courEe of
prices have lately sustained their action, and their
operations have been fortunate.
The arrivals of the week indicate a lessening of re
ceipts, and have been 13S bales of Sea Islands and
Floridas, and 5C2-1 tales of Uplands; against 157 boles
ol' Sea Islands and Florida, and 8754 bales of Upland
for the week before, ard 2?i bales of Sea Islands and
