A PATENT ROLLER.-Captain Auguste Eaber nicht has invented a new roller intonded for levelling tho asplmltum sidewalks. Mr. C. Werner, our Charleston Tubal Cain, and Mr. J. F. Taylor, of the Phoenix Iron Work*, havo the credit for its construction. Though the roller weighs twenty-five hundred pounds, it can be easily moved by two men-a combirta rion of small steel rollers around each axle enabling tho ponderous cylinder to pass ovor the ground with case. It will be in operation in a few days on tho sidewalk in Meeting street. Meanwhile, the curious can call at Mr. "Werner's and inspect the wonder. "ROUND DANCES" DENOUNCED_Archbishop Spalding, of Baltimore, tho highest dignitary of thc Roman Catholic Church on this conti? nent, has published a pastoral letter which takes strong ground agaiust the so-called "round dance." We quote : "In this connection we consider it to be our duty to warn our people against thoso amuse? ments which may easily become to them an occasion of sin, and especially against thoso fashionable dances which, as at preseut car? ried on, are revolting to every feeling of deli? cacy and propriety, and are fraught with the greatest danger to morals." THE PROMENADE ENTEBrAINMENT last night was merely a repetition of thc previous night's performance. The tables wore woll attonded, and patrons were not found wanting. Tho visitors amused themselves by projnenadinf through tito spacious hall, while thc smaller fry, wr>o had charge of grab bags almost as largo os themselves, plied their vocation as? siduously, and succeeded in extracting thc small change from innumerable pockets. At a givon signal tho hall was deserted for the back room, where the gre.tt magician displayed his wonders. A number of scriptural scenes were portrayed on the canvass, and tho exhibition was pronounced one of the evonts of the ovon ing. We understand the entertainment will be continued for one nigbt longer. THE REAL ESTATE MABK LT.-Messrs. Leitch St, Bruns sold yesterday for Masterin Equity, J. W. Gray, tho following property : A plantation on Cooper River, in St. Thomas' Parish, known as Moreland & Payet's landing track. Tho plantation measured about two thous? nd eight hundred and thirty-one acres, of high land and marsh, and brought $1800. Thc plantation known as Beabank, in St. ThvTW&s' Parish, measuring fourteen hundred and twenty acres, for $850. Tho fc?t and store on the Northern side of j Vendue Rsnge, being thc fourth of the range of ten stores, and measuring twenty-two feet front by fifty-two feet deep for $2200. The terms in theso three sales were one-fifth cash, br.Iance in one, two, three and four years. Mr. James L. Gantt sold for Master in Equity, James Tupper, a lot at tho comer of Amherst and Nassau streets, measuring on Amherst-itrect one hundred and soventeeu, on Nassau-.-trcet fifty-nine feel, on the par? allel lino ono hundred an eleven feet, and on the line opposite to Amhorst-street, one hun? dred and twenty-seven feet, for $1400; terms one-third cash, balance in one and two vears. THE HELICOID CENTRIFUGAL PUMP.-This new primp, the invention of Mr. N fl. Lebby, was tested yesterday at the Artesian Well. Those who knew Mr. Lebby'e wonderful in? ventive genius expected to witness an elabor? ate combination ot' machinery, but were sur? prised to see tho little instrument that ho had in operation. Thc pump proper weighs but thirty pounds, and is extremely simplo iu Us construction, i he base is of iron, but the works ero of brass and copper. It is an im? provement on Mr. Lebby'a patent for thc steam dredge boat, which was so officiont in remov? ing obstructions aud deepening our harbor be? fore thc war. It is entirely valveless, being worked altogether by suction. When starting all that is necessary is to put some water in the mouth-pipe and the motion of thc puru;) creamies a vacuum and ut once draws up tho water? Though only worked yesterday with steam at ouc-horse power, thc pump drew water at thc rate of two hundred and fifty gal? lons per minute. If a hose had been attached the water could havo been thrown to a consid? erable di- tance. These pumps can bo made of any size and .capacity, aud will prove extremely useful to mining and dredging companies, rice planters and seafaring men. FATAL ACCIDENT_On last Thursday morn ing, at an early hour, the dead body of a color? ed man named Jacob Hook was found lying across the track of the South Carolina Rail? road, about ten miles below Columbia. The unfortunate man was terribly crushed. THE THEATRE.-"East Lynne" drew another large audi .-nee last night. Mr. and Mrs. Wat? kins acted their parts to perfection, while they were ably sustained by the troupe. The man? agers have a number of new plays in prepara? tion, and the dramatic version of the famous novel "Griffith Gaunt" will be represented on the boards to-night. THE CO?ET OF EQUITY-CHANCELLOR CAB BOLL PRESIDING.-The case of Glennie vs. Weston was resumed. Mr. McCrady conoluded his argument, and Mr. T. G. Barker was heard in reply. In the case of Phillips vs. Rivers the plead? ings were read, and Mr. Wm. Whaley was heard for the complainant. MAYOR'S COURT.-Hia Honor .Mayor Burns wa 3 greeted by but few offenders yesterday morning, and the session was unusually short. A forgetful individual, who had taken out a private license for his cart, but hid neglected lo expose it as required, was fined $5 for his remis?ues3. Two inebriate3 came to grieif. They had LU .ule their beds m shady spots, but the smell of their breath betrayed them, and they were brought to the bar of justice and relieved of | $5 each. Two wandereis applied for lodgings, but as chev proved that their case waa ono of neces? sity, they were discharged to hu at work, but told net to repeat their visit. HOW HE RUNS THE MACHINE-CITY IMPROVE? MENTS-OFFICIALS WIDE AWAKE-CHAS LESION TO BE REJUVENATED. When General Burns was appointed by the military authorities to supersede Mayor Gail lard, everybody grumbled. Some predicted that this "last feather would break the camel's back," and mourned in sackcloth and ashes over the probabdity that at an early day old Charleston would cortainly go to eternal smash. Others were more hopeful-held their tongues, thought the curt laconic speeoh of the new Mayor meant work-and waited. Be? fore the end of two weeks, city bills which, for more than a year, have been at a fearful dis? count, appreciated nearly to their par valflej city stocks advanced twenty per cent.; the po? lice, who had almost forgotten how a green? back looked, rejoiced in being paid off with whole packages of the article fresh from the bank; the public institutions, under (he patron? age of the city, wero. Bupplied with tho same welcome currency, and in other departments, financially speaking, "all went merry as a marriage bell." Then the Mayor stirred around among-mus ty old ordinances. Stray cattle were inconti? nently gobbled up, and their owners fined. The lie mses of all the Jehu's in town were inspect? ed; and liquor shops witnessed something more stirring than a toddy stick. War was made on vagrants; battalions of sweepers and shov? ellers marched to their usual slow time, foot by foot, through the streets; the inspector, infected by the oxygenated energy of his chief, was here, there and everywhere; the engineer never did delve more industriously elbow-deep into calculations, and tho City Council looked on and wondered. So far, so good. Everybody's dolighted. Everybody praises the new Mayor. The brok? ers on Broad-street hang out their compliments to his administration in the shape of shingleB which read "City Bills Wanted," and the city itself is making a new toilet under the vigor? ous manipulation of somewhat rough barbers it is true, which, by the time the sickly sea? son commences, will enable her to exhibit a clean foco and whito piuaforo when Bbc makes her summer bow. Wo notico a few of the pending changes. 9 THE SANITARY CONDITION of streets is a matter of serious concerti, and the Mayor bas commenced work upon them with energy. The tidal drains are to be promptly overhauled, and tho City Engineer is now making arrangements to flood the whole of them simultaneously so that Jbarles on may undergo a regular washing, and these noisome receptacles of filth be prevented from sending iorth the malaria which koeps the doctor busy and the graveyard open. . A PLANE ROAD. From Line-street, on King, to the city boun? dary, a plank road is soon to be constructed. The contract va in conception, and whon com? pleted will supply a desideratum to thoso who enjoy an airing behind horse-fiosh. Turnpike gates are to be built, irom the revenuo of which tho expense is to bo paid, and the prices therein and out will be regulated by tho Council. THE ORIGIN OF FIRES. Another important order just issued by the Mayor, is that which we publish this morning instractiDg the Chiof Enginoer of the Depart? ment to investigate tho causo and origin of all fire?, and to make use of his authority for this purpose to the requisite degree. Heretofore these examinations havo boen mado by tho agents of InBuranco Companies, but only in self-defence; hereafter it may bo presumed that foul play will bc forrcttcd out and punished, and that we Bhall know the why and wherefore of every conflagration that calls so many peo? ple from thoir snug beds at midnight, and burns np fire-wood in the steam engines. STREET IMPROVEMENTS. Thn workmen were buBy yesterday iu lovcl ling that portion of the Meoting-streot aide walk n.Tth of Queen-street. The old cellars ore being filled up to the level of tho pave? ment, old curbs aro removed, and this portion of the city will soon rejoice in a firm, bard and even asphaltum pavement, lhe work is un? der the immediate chargo of Captain Auguste Habcrnicbt, who laid the sidewalk in Char? lotte-street, in front of General Canby's resi? dence. Mr. Edward England will superintend the laying of new brick curbing along tho side? walk. This improvement on the broken foot? way of this part of Meeting-street has been long needed, and General Burns requested tho City Engineer to havo the contracts made and the work commenced at once. Captain Haber nicht has a largo experience in this business, and the street under his mana^emout will soon assume a different appearance. The pil? lars of the Circular Church encroach consider? ably on tho sidewalk, and, as the church is now in ruins, they could be easily removed. Should the church bc rebuilt, however, it is very doubtful whether these pillars Trill be adapted as a part of the architectural design. A side? walk should be olear, and an excellent opportunity is now offered to romovo these unsightly obstructions. There *re several par? ties in the city who would bo willing to romove thom for their material, and it Ls full time that some action should bo taken ia tho matter. When Mayor Miles removed tho colonado which disgraced the Meeting-street eido of tho guard? house there was a general cry ot "desecration," but the impiovoraent effected soon ailonced tho croakers. Tho removal of thc Ciroular Church pillara will no doubt be ntionded with tho samo lamentation, but time will prova that the action is justifiable. FENCES. It is in contemplation also to erect fences around all vacant lots on King and Meeting streets, between Maikct and Queen. If tho owners of thc property aro unable to do it themselves, it may bc done at tho expense cf the city, and tho cost assessed upon the own? ers. A wise measure, for if there is any pla.e .in Christendom that would tempt athiefona dark night to "go through" a victim, or entice a drunken man into unseen pitfalls, it is the locality above described. PAUPERS. Thanks to a strong hand, we are no longer to be cursed by such pests. Those who live here ore to be put to work. Thoso who como or are sent here are to bo sent back. The Mayor don't believe in any such style of imposition by his brother magnates in other dies, and, like Mr. Lincoln, "has put his foot down ?rmly." There are other points to which wc shall ad? vert hereafter, and which should b9 mentioned in the present article, but our space is lim? ited and the matter must be reserved. BODTJNDO ISLAND GUANO.-If our agricultu? rists would take tho trouble to examino tho merits of tho above article, which is now being extensively imported and sold by Messrs. Wil? lis ic Chisolm of this city, wo feel assured they would follow thc example of all who have ex? perimented with it, and usc no other fertilizer known. Although employed for many years in the WesL Indies in tho cultivation of sugar cane and tho cereals with great speceas, it is only since 18G6 that it has become extensively known in the United States, and wherever used it has given a degree of satis faction that has been the theme r f many warmly stated testi? monials in its behalf. One great advantago which it possesses is in the fact that it is not a combination, or rather a manipulation subject to the honesty of the manufacturer, but a pure natural guano, given to the public in the very state in which it is found on Eodundo Island. The price is reasonable, the result unques? tionable, and the evidences of value such as ought to invite every planter and farmer to confer with Messrs. Willis A; Chisolm on the subject. THE REPUBLICAN NOMTNATINQ CONVENTION was in session until a late hour last night.
