BURNT TO DEATH.-We learn that on Thurs? day last a negro child, name unknown, was burnt to death at Mount Pleasant. The mother tad gone out lor a abort time and left th? child alone in the house; during her absence the child must have played with the fire, which communicated to her clothing, and, be? fore assistance arrived, she was burnt to death. UNFORBTDDEN Faun.-A large consignment of fruit arrived yesterday by the schooler Azeldi & Laura, from Baracoa, and Bart & Winn, the famed fruiterers of Market-street, favored us with a specimen of the cargo in the shape of a grand bunch of incomparable ba? nanas. This unforbidden fruit is tho finest we have seen this season, each banana being as large as a piece of chalk, and os rosy as a .nay morning. RAILROAD ISON.-The bark Nordbosn, just at thia port from Cardiff, brings a cargo ot railroad iron to the consignment of the South Carolina Railroad Company. We are pleased to state this, as it gives an assurance that the present excellent condition of the track is to be fully kopt up; and the public may conse? quently rely on having a comfortable and easy passage whenever they patronize the South Carolina Railroad. RAILROAD Accn>E>*T.-Wo have again to chronicle an accident on tho Wilmington and Weldon Railroad, more serious in its results than the one we reported yesterday. On Wednesday evening about 7 o'clock, says tho Wilmington Star of the 7th, the down Express train due here at 2.20 A. M. yesterday morn? ing, was thrown from the track at Rugglea' Turnout, between Enfield and Halifax, the switch having been changed and locked on the wrong track. The engine Gov. Elba and five oars ran off, the latter being badly broken up. Mr. John Nieymer, the engineer, and a colored fireman, were slightly injured. It was impos? sible to clear the wreck away in time to allow the trains to pass yesterday and last night and there were, consequently, no mails this morning. A telegram from the Road Master, received yesterday afternoon, reported the engine and one car on the track, and stated that by strenuous exertions, he hoped to clear the way for the up train at five o'clock this morning. If this ia done, the mails will proba? bly arrive here between one and two P. M. PROBABLE MURDER.-Information bas been -Received by Coroner Whiting, of a dead body that was found yesterday iu a ditch, in St. An? drew's Parish, on the plantation of Mr. Wil bam Ravened, about two and a half miles from the city. It was ascertained that the deceased and another white man had left the terry on the morning of the G tb, and that only one was seen to return to the city. Tho negro who saw the IWJ go over the river, and one return, was employed on the Ravenel place, and wont over himself yesterday to look after some mules. While there his attention was attract? ed by some blood on the railroad track, and following it np, he soon discovered the body, concealed in a ditch, and recognized it as one of the two who had crossed the day previous. The occurrence was immediately reported to bis employer, and by bim to Coroner Whiting, who authorized the removal of the body to the plantation. The inquest will be held this day, and the coroner requests the attendance of all parties who know of any missing person, and also of those who suspeot any foul play. Wt do not recollect ever to have heard a poem re*t w.th more soul-tho reader moro entirely ir accord with tho poet, than was the case here. "Tho Attack on Bomo," by Byron, wa? alsc much admired. THE ANTEDILUVIAN BEDONOE HORE.-Profes? sor Holmes, a few days ago, did us tho hon? or of showing us a few of the treasures recently exhumed from thc great post-plei ocene storehouse, which furnishes fossils and potsherds for tho theorizer, and super? phosphates for the practical man. The two philosophies here go hand in hand. Wo have frequently spoken of the " Ashley bed," both ia connection with the great geo? logical and paloontological discoveries of Pro? fessor Hohne-:, aud more reoently, aa the placo of a deposit cf a gteat fertilizer, which is des? tined to revolutionize the agricultural industry of the State. Last week, one of tbe gentlemen connected with the South carolina Mining and ?anu tac turing Company, digging near the Ash? ley river, found several very interesting relics, of ancient civilization : One of them a piece of pottery, Bimilar to others previously disoovored; and a brick, a real, genuine, square briok "adobe," or unburned. The Professor is ot the opinion that this brick is composed of the marl lound in the same looality, at some depth below the surface of the giound. Along with these relics were also found a horse's tooth, and part of an elephant's tooth, both in excellent preservation, and unmistaka? ble in character. There are few localities on the face bf the globe, probably, more interest? ing to the geologist, or student of antiquity, than this same Ashley bed, the romains, doubtless, of a vast watery tomb of the, dwell? ers in cities, and of che beasts ol the forest.
