CHARLESTON.
WEDNESDAY MORNING, JANUARY 1, 1868
HAPfr" NEW YEAR ! say we, to our friends
and readers everywhere. THE DAILY NEWS,
this miming, appears in a fresh and more
attracive dress, and, although the propor?
tions of our sheet are somewhat curtailed
a step which the universal prostration of
business and consequent diminution of ad?
vertising has rendered expedient-we can
pledge ourselves, in entering the new year,
that there shall be no falling off, either in
the anount or quality of the reading matter
presented in our columns. On the contrary,
encouraged by the generous spirit in which
wr Ii ivo been, so fur, sustained, we shall
redouble our efforts to make this journal,
in e7cry particular that tends to give com?
pleteness, variety and inrerest to a newspa?
per, worthy the confidence and support of
the k<o jrn public.
The Dally Mews Rt ?mus Thanks.
Those who strike ont for themselves a
new path in any direction must be prepared
to meet with both opposition and intoler?
ance; and those are fortunate indeed, who
lind that their efforts for the general good
are appreciated by the whole of those whose
favorable opinions are most to be desired,
and that disapprobation is only to be found
in tnose quarters where adverse feeling is
not to be feared, and where it is wholly
powerless for injury or harm.
To this undeserved good-fortune the Pro?
prietors of THE DAILT NEWS may justly
prefer their claim. When they assumed
control they received a cordial welcome,
aqd the improvements and reforms which
they have already carried out have elicited
for them the most flattering commendations
from every part of the country. ?
Those who bad known the Proprietors in
civil life gave them both encouragement
and praise. Those who had labored with
th' m as journalists in New York, in Mary
latd, in Louisiana and in Virginia, predic?
ted for them a prosperous career. Those
wi o hud served with them, and fought with
thom, in the armies of the Confederate
States wished their old comrades a decisive
vi-uory in the War of journalistic life.
Their contemporaries in the Northern and
Southern States, and in the country dis?
tricts of South Carolina, extended to them,
once and again, the heartiest assurances of
their earnest and friendly sympathy.
For these kind words and kinder thoughts
the Proprietors of THE NEWS now return
their thanks, and this they do especially to
the country and district papers of this State.
South Carolina journalists have always
borne a high and enviable reputation, and
this reputation was never better deserved
t{?aa, it ?9 by those, who, in every District,
Irom AbbjyiUe't?'York, ably represent the
vants aud necessities, the hopes and the
fears, of this beloved State. The Proprie
> ors of TUE NEWS hiivo treasured up in their
?earts the remembrance of every gentle
speech and generous phrase, aud they are
fortified and strengthened in their firm re?
solve to work only tor the weal ol the South
md the welfare of this still undaunted peo?
ple.
From the public THE NEWS has received a
substantial and remunerative support, and
the Proprietors feel that their record in the
pact and their conduct in the present are a
suffisant sh ie! J against the shafts of malice,
the venouvof prejudice, the specious croak?
ing of ill-concealed dislike.
To a generous public, lo all our friends,
to all our kindly brethren of the press, the
Proprietors of TUE DAILY NEWS wish, with
all their hearts, a Happy New Year.
The Buttlc-Koyiil Between Free Trade
and Protection.
The Lion and the Unicorn of nursery
story have ceased to fight for the crown,
pugilistic encounters no longer adorn the
streets of every fashionable city, the boys
have ceased to march, and at last the war,
love ! is over. But Greek fights Turk,
Abyssinian TUEOPORE holds the British in
chancery, and, throughout the United States,
ihe legions of fre9 trade fight the armies of
protection. Every man demands freedom
from taxation for himself, and a full dose
cf fiscal medicine for all the rest of man
kind. Whiskey and iron, tobacco and dry
e,?>4s, ships und wooden clocks, ?oal and
telescof-^ have entered the lists, and each
branch ol' \t*4e, ia doing its best for itself
by doing its worse for its neighbor.
Manufacturers,-from, those who sell nut?
meg? to those who build locomotives,_
mildly ask that their little tax ot fve per
cent, may, like slavery, be abolished.
Whiskey tells the tale of its medicinal
uses, its powers for heating and cooling,
tor inspii iug and cheering, for oblivion aud .
death, lind cries out that it will not cheat
thc government any longer if thc tax is but
reduced.
Tobacco smoothly murmurs that this tax
upou smoke is a tax upon air, which is
freest of the free iu thc lungs of the Amer?
ican citizen. It points to its power for
soothing and calming, vows that it is a pub
lie benefactor, and promises Congress some
home-made Begars of native cabbage leaf
if the tax is only repealed.
Philosophers write that the tax upon
philosophical instruments is so high that
the only stars they can see with plainness
are those upun shoulders at Washington,
und on the ice-ponds in winter. They
complain that chronometers are wrong, that
quadrants are inaccurate, that thermome?
ters are unreliable, that science is going to
the dogs;-all because of their fifteen per
oent. tax.
Locomotive makers growl that tko tax is
more firmly rivetied (lian are their boilers,
and that its continuance will cause tte
whole fraternity to explode in a passion
and blow up the government.
Men ia the wool interest, nicu in the iron
interest, meu in the We&ern interest, niuet
at the capital and attack or support the
measure under debate whatever it may be,
not upon general principles but in view of j
its presumed relations to particular placee
or persons.
King Co ton, however, stands upon his
diguity and calls for a repeal of his pecu?
liar tax for (he benefit and profit of the
whole country. Thc pica is not on account
of white moro than of black, not for the
South more than for the North-it is only
that now, for tho first time, the interests ol
cotton and wool are identical and the same.
How the f ght will close, the oldest in
r-habitant does not know. Whether Lion
will chase Uaicora all round the town;
whether iron will beat longcloth; wheiher
corn will be victorious over wooden nui
megs; whether inoorne tax will whip heavy
import duties; whether whiskey will over?
come Pennsylvania coal; cannot now be
said, but the contest will be a long one and
I a hard one, and will not end until each
interest learns that there is no natural in?
compatibility between the prosperity of
East, West, North and South, and that iron,
cotton, wheat and wool may, like a band of
big brothers, live and flourish together.
In the meantime, the attention of law?
makers, and law-breakers, is called to the
advice given by an old legislator to his
young successor :
"My friend,"-said he,-"always vote
for every appropriation of money that is
asked for-that will gain you credit for lib?
erality. Then vote against every tax bill
that will make the peoplo believe you are
anxious to shield them from taxation. So
you will gain friends on all sides."
Forney for I'enlanlsm.
Mr. FORNEY is not satisfied with imagin?
ing that he saw thc lovely watering places
of Scotland in Bailing up the Mersey to
Liverpool, or with his grand discovery that
it was the present Emperor of tho French
who caused the remains of NAPOLEON the
First tobe removed from St. Helena to Paris.
The one, as a freak of the mind, and the
other, as a proof of stupendous Ignorance,
would have been sufficient for any ordinary
blockhead, but both will not satiate the
craving appetite of tho double-dunce ol
Washington and Philadelphia.
Renown or notoriety he must and will
have; and what cannot always be gained by
learning, and merit, and an independent
spirit, may be won by effrontery, shallow?
ness and a mean and fawning soul. This
is FORNEY'S consolation; and, while others
arc only famous, infamous he shall bc.
Many little amusements has Mr. FORNEY.
Misrepresentation, garbling, moral obliqui?
ty, scavengerian abuse, arc taken up in turn,
and when Ritdical and anti-Radical are
weary of the play, FORNEY takes a hand ii
the round game of Fenianism. He has
plans, forsooth, that will bring victory to
Fenianism in lees time than THADDEUS STE
VENS can frame a now supplementary bili;
he has schemes that require no green flag?,
no armies, no rifled gun, but whioh will
snuff out the British candle as quickly as a
guillotine might alice off the head of a re?
fractory citoyen; he has tricks that go far
beyond those of every monkey that ever
was boru, from that of the lillie SAVOYARD to
DE CHAILLU'S new monstrous gorilla. And
there i9 one Fenian plot more wonderful,
more magnificent, and mure absurd than man
had ever before conceived, and that plot was
born in the skull of foolish, fanatical FORNEY.
This gallant stay-at-home suppressor ol
the Southern rebellion recommends that
the Fenians should land on the Isle ol
Wight, and kidnap the Queen and her
Court. He regrets that it has not been
done before, and says it would be easy
enough to run a light steamboat up the
Solent and drop down upon Osborne House
and its inhabitants. With a royal hostage
in possession, "what a splendid bargain the
Fenians could have made for Ireland-se?
curing her independence at least, if not
compensation for 'he miserable past."
So FORNEY is a fool as well as a knave !
With no sincerity, no courage, no self-sac?
rifice to offor his own couutry,-he becomes
the oracle and adviser of a people who long
for freedom. The advocate of white-slave?
ry,-he professes to be the ohampion of the
liberties of Ireland. Afraid himself to war
upon men,-he couusois a gallant and chiv?
alrous nation to war upon a widowed and
brokeu-hearted woman.
And FO?NET does not remember that the
lime is past v ben the fortunes of England
were held in on? single hand, and broken
sceptres were the signs of ruined king?
doms. Englund would still grow in wealth
though she did lose her Qtuien ? The Iri^h
could not compel their Saxon neighbors io
grant them independence thougu FORNEY'S
plan were successfully tried; avd they
know, better than FORNEY,cau know, that
no country ever won its liberty by doiag
that which would set the prejudice of tht
whole world aguiust it, and that no natiou
of brave and heroic men, such as the Irish
ure, would wish to avenge their national
wrongs by waylaying and insultiug a wo
man,-whether Queen or peasant, milk?
maid or duchess, village belle or dame of
high Ooaree.
