Ax ALARM OF FIRE on Saturday was caused by the burning ol a chimney in McBride's lane. No damage was done, and the fire was extinguished before tho arrival of the engines. Tat LADIES' BAZAAR, which was temporarily closed on Saturday evening, will bo reopened o;: next Tnursday, tho 2oth, at 7 o'clock, P. M., when the ladies hope to be able to present some addi? tional attractions. SLEEPING OCT.-Charles Philips, a colored youth, was found on Saturday night sleeping in a small boat at Adger's Wharf. The considerate po? liceman took him out of tho dew and furnished him quarters in the guardhouse. A PosTCFFiCE has been established at North Sante?, Georgetown District, and a mail i asses between it and Charleston once a week, each way. closing at the Charleston Postoffice on Tuesdays, at half-past 9 o'clock, and leaving North Santt-e for Charleston on Fridays. PANORAMA OF COLUMBIA will be exhibited on Tuesday night for the first time. Wherever this wonderful tableau of our sistor city has been ex? hibited it has attracted large and admiring au? diences. Tho proprietors have put their price of admission so low that it will come within the reach of all. Sannox GAMESTERS BROUGHT IO GRIEF.-On Saturday one white and two colored boys were en? joying ti.o noblo pastime of shinnic cn East Bay. near Lanrens-street, when one o? the youngsters drove his shinnie stick through tho window of Mr. F. Wellman's storo. This proceeding not being to Mr. Webman's taste, ho had ibo trio locked up in the guardhouse. A WABBIOE.-For the past few day? a soldier in an old and faded uniform ha3 boon seen on the streets. He represents himself as ono of the French army who served in Mexico under Maxi? milian, and on the breast of his coat aro numer? ous decorations commemorating the different hat ties in which ho was ongagod, from that of Sol? ferino to those of the Menean campaign. MEYER, SeatmeL CHRISTMAS TREES.-Sarita Claus has heralded his approach, and those who adhere to the timo honored practice of distributing gifts from a Christmas tree, arc busy in making preparations for thia event. To-morrow night ia Christmas eve, and the grand unveiling of the tree takes place and the gifts of Santa Claus given to the happy children. Several of tue Sunday Schools of the city have taken advantage of thc occasion, and the teachers and others interested have pre? pared Christmas trees for tho scholars, and will be exhibited to-morrow night, and the gifts awards to their little charges. ARREST OF A SUPPOSED THIEF.-Ibo Wilmington papers of SUD<1-.V mention the arrest in that city of a man named Swifc, who was onpposcd to Lave robbed a vessel in this harbor of some eix hun? dred dollars in gold. Swift had boen previously arrested in this city and kept in confinement for some time, but nothing could be proved against him, and he was released. It was thought that when leaviag the city he would take his ill-gotten booty with him, and it could then be secured. Upon this supposition ho was arrested in Wilming? ton, but nothing was found on his porson or in his baggage that would justify his further detention. CHRISTMAS WEATHER.-Tho weather during Sat? urday and Sunday was quite moderato for this season. Fires were allowed to die out, and open doors and windows wera not uncomfortable. L, ia not unusual in this climate to cat a Christmas dinner with open windows, and, from present ap? pearances, the prospect is good for a continuance of this practice, lt is extremely fortunate that, while the citizens of the Nortl .tro suffering and dying from the cold, our peoplo have been spared, and the poorer classes have been comparatively comfortable. An old Scotch proverb says "a green yule makes a fat kirk yard," but this is not appli? cable to this country, and a mild Christmas is not looked upon as an occurrence to be dreaded. AN APPEAL, FROM THE COI -N FACTORS OF CHARLESTON TO CONOEJSS.-A petition was circu? lated among tho cotton factors Saturday asking Congress for an appropriation to aid them in ma? king advances to the planters. Since tho war the planters wore compelled to draw heavily on then factors, and the partial failure of their crops for two seasons has prevented the payment of thoir indebtedness and crippled thc resources of tho factor. U Congress advances the money required for planting operations this year the probability is that the result will be successful, and the planters can then repay their factors. At present the pros? pect for those who are out of funds is none of tho brightest. DRT BONES.-At the butcher pens and slaughter houses in this city a large quantity of bones and horns aro accumulated. These have formerly been shipped to the North, and were sold for a mere nominal sum, but since tho introduction of the fertilizing works, a home demand for these articles has been originated. Ono of the principal ingredients of tho Wando fertilizer is the phos? phate of lime which is obtained in large quantities from old bones, and several cart loads of this re? fuge have boen purchased by the company. There are few things so insignificant, that they cannot be utilized, and old bonc9, so recently a drug on this maike4, will now form an important article of trade. REV. LOWE Piracx, D.D_Thia patriarch of Southern Methodism preached in Trinity Church yesterday morning to a largo and attentive con? gregation, from Psalms dil. 8-12 "The Lord is merciful and gracious," etc. Dr. Pierce is now eighty-four years old, and was admitted to the conference in this city in 1804, just sixty-three years ago. He has been an effective preacher during all this time, and his voice, boaring, vigor of thought and clearness of enunciation, point to a man of sixty rather than to one who has passed the extremo of tho allotted period mentioned ic the 90th psalm. We first heard Dr. Piero? aboul ?;>enty years ago, and we can note no difference made by this last score in the appearance of tht venerable patriarch. CHANNUCKAH OR FEAST OF Lu>RTs.-Thid, one of thc minor Jewish fest:? als, commences to-day. and continuos ?or eight days. There are differ ent opinions in ?egard to its onjin, one of then holduag that it is derived from a miracle whici happened during a very vigorous 6?ego in thi time of the second temple, when tho holy oil foi the perpetual light was expended, and miraculous ly renewed until the raising of the siege. Tc commemorate this miracle, the Jews light wa: tapers, one on tho first evening, two on the se cond, and so on, adding ono every evening to th< eighth day. The festival is only observet among tho most orthodox Israelites, and in thii country is generally neglected. CHRISTMAS SERVICES.-At St. Mary's Church. Ha *el-street, on Christmas day, there will bo High Mass at half-past 10 o'clock, when Mozart's Twelfth Mass will bo sung. Tho regular choir will bo as? sisted by tho first amateur vocalists in the city, and tho churns will consist of about twenty voices. No pains have been spared to make tho music worthy of tuc day, and it is expected that Mozart's (?rand Mass will bo bung in a manner that will eclipso its performance upon any previous occa? sion in t tis city. At thc Cathedral Chapel, Queen-atroot, the "Midnight Mas?" (so called hom thc carly hour at vhich it formerly took place) will be celebrated at ~> o'clock A. M., and from tba". Lour uutil 9 A. M., ? boro will bo successive masses every half hour. High Mass will take placo at half-past 10 A. M., at w;.ich it is expected that the Right Hov Bishop Lynch will officiate and preach. Tun SfAMsn TRADE.-It will bo noticed with -atislaclion by our citizens that the large and growing trade which was carried on with Barcelona and other Spanish ports previous to tho war, is being gradually revived in full force. Spanish vessels are constantly reaching here from the West India Islands and other points, which come to procuro cotton, naval stoves, lumber, Ac. These customers generally purchase the high grades of cotton, and are willing to pay full prices to pro? cure the ariicle they desire, and thoir patronage gives a tono and strength to tho market. At present we have some half dozen in port loading for various ports in Spain, and they are consigned to Messrs. W. P. Hall, P. J. Esnard, C. T. Lowndes & Co., and J. A. Enslow & Co. They generally como provided with exchange of thc most reliable character or the hard coin, and are among the best of paymasters. OCR STEAMSHIPS.--It will be noticed by our ex? port table that freights for Northern ports, which were dull for some time, have taken a more active turn, and on Saturday last all the steamers left this pori with good cargoes, the steamships Champion for New York. Geo. B. Upton for Boston, and the Sea Gull for Baltimore, being the vessels alluded to. The various aleuts of these steamers have been exerting themselves untiringly to procure i'usi'.iess for thc Hues, and are also doing much to advance the trade of the city. There is an in? creasing tendency on the part of the North Caro? lina and Virginia railroads to oSer inducements for lreight to take their routes through to Wil? mington, X. C., and Norfolk, Va., one route being by Charlotte, X. C.. and the other by the Wilming? ton and Manchester Railroad, the policy of both being to take trade from thin city; and those who have the welfare of Charleston and the State at heart must prepare to encourage in every way the steam lines from this point North, and to dis? courage ino Charlotte and South Carolina and the Wilmington and Manchester roads under the poli? cy which has for some time animated them. HARD TIMES.-This is now tho cry everywhere. Tho merchants, factors, planters and laboring classes, all complain of tho dull times, with no work an 1 no money. The Christmas season has been generally one of some business life and ac? tivity, and though it has still preserved that char? acteristic, tue trade has not boon as extensive as in former years. This dearth of business has not been confined to Charleston, but is felt in the more prosperous Northern cities, and every mail brings intelligence of failures or threatened suspensions. For a ti ne tho arrival of wagons from various portions of thc State revived thc business in the up-town stores, but, with thc exception of a few stragglers, tho yards aro now empty, and the trade has settled to its usual dulness. Christmas sup? plies are considered essential to tho comfort of every family, and thoir purchase has kept tho clerks in thc different stores busy, bul it is only a temporary relief, and the merchants consider tho prospect decidedly blue. The Winter has be2ii thus far quite mild, but tho signs of the times in? dicate that its severity will yet be felt, and the scarcitv of money and the want of employment will make it a hard Winter to the poor.
