A Question for Our Plautcrs. In a previous article we considered tho ex? periment of freed labor, and how it bas worked since tno cl :so of the war. We adverted to the contract system, and oxpressod our belief that after our leading staple shall have reached something like a txed market value, and when the negro shall have learned to recognize oon iract obligations, planing cotton may become practicable, and perhaps profitable, with Aired labor. The payment of fixed wages, in the ab? sence of these conditions, has proved a great loss to the employer during the year just dosing, and must, therefore, be tibauJoned, preferable, ia many respects, as it unquestionably is, to ..working on shares." Auether reason why the latter plan must be adopted, even against the better judgment of tho employer, is that but few of our planters eau command a sufficiency of ready money, at this time, to pay their hands from week to week or month to month. Many havo provisions, and the "stock" and implements for another year's operations, and perhaps money or credit enough to pro oure the necessary fertilizers, and by oo-opera iiou-working upon shares-thc production of a crop will bo practicable. To show the difference more clearly in the working of these two systems-paying wages and working upon shares-we will present un estimate made for aa a few weeks ago by two practical planters, both experienced farmers ?ind busiuess men. Forty bales cotton, four hundred pounds each, at fifteen cents.S2.40U.00 Soven huudreJ bushels com, at $1.50.1,050.00 Fodder.105.00 Lot manure and ootton seed.150.00 Thirty bushels poas, at $1.50. 45.00 Two hundred bushols potatoes, at forty cents.80.00 Shucks.50.00 Total.$3:8S!?.00 This, we are confident, will be found a fair and careful calculation, except that in giving four bales 'o the baud, but little allowance is made for bad seasons, bad work or stealing ; und yet with all nus-drawbacks omitted, the planter comes out $321 behind ; or about pays expenses, if no ia'erest is allowed on farm, stock, etc. l.c prices, therefore, should range about the same next year, and other conditions be equal, the removal of the cotton tax will secure the planter against a":ual loss. There would even then be no margin for profit. His operations secure a comfortable home and sub? sistence for the laborers, and, at the best, the same for himself and family. There is little prospect for making money, or paying debts, the interest of which is accumulating all the while. We will now give nnother estimate, for a FARM WITH TEN HANDS WORKING TOR ONE-HALT THS CROP. Thc employer tu furnish corn and fodder for horses, which is to be returned from the orop. The employer to pay one-half the expenses of the farm, aud the hands the other half. Tho hands are to leave the plantation in as good order as they found it, to make munure, repair fences, etc.: EXPENSES. One-half of this, $781.87$, is the share of the hands ; from which is to be deducted the cost of bacon, 1200 pounds, at 20 cent?, $240, leaving 3541.87$ to be divided among the teu hands, and netting each $54.19, against $100, wages paid them by our firs: eptimate. We only counted three bales to the hand in thc last calculation ; for upon inquiry we find that two bales to ibo hand was a fair average in this Slate during the year just passed-and about ono bale to three acres. Upon a comparison of the two plaus, it will be seen that by the latter there is far less lia? bility of loss to the planter; especially at the present low price of cottou. - The German Vote. The German, in niue c;tsee out of ten, when he arrives in America, is a Democrat. His affinities are with popular institutions, and the Democratic party heretofore has geucrally en? joyed his support. Tho "Anzeiger des West ens," a leading German paper, published in St. Louis, says that up to the Presidential elec? tion of 185'J, nine-tenths of the German citi? zens, and those of German descent, belonged to the Democratic party. The shivery ques? tion alono alienated them from their former political associates, and they joined tho Repub? licans, with whom they had noiiiiug else in common. Tue Germans love liberty ?.nd ha'e slavery in every form or shape; but they never learned to worship the black idol; and, with scarcely an exception, are born foes to Puri? tanism. When, therefore, the negro was eman? cipated, and Republicanism cam" to signify intolerance under its protean guises, thc Teu? tons bigu': to think it -.vus time to ca?t about for new political associations.
