THE CONTENTION E LECTION.- Tho election
passed ell quietly, and, beyond tho dusky voters
few took any interest in the piuceediugs. At the
diff?rent polls the scenes woro the same is t ose
enacted on the previous day. With the cxcout.on
of tho Washington Eugine Hons 3, the polls looked
like banquet halls deserted, tba voters being tow
and their attendance irregular; but at that prc*
?linet there was a perfect blackberry Jam, thu
voters standing six and eight doep around the
iicuso. The crowd was, however, perfectly good
humored, and they evidently thong ut voting a
bigger Job than they had c vor done bofore. Tn ere
was no attempt at any disturba ce, and beyond
the inconvenience occasioned by tho absancc ol
tlx* freedmen from tho.r regular employments,
the election was ur.notiood. Tao hst vote has.
however, boon polled, and, strange to say, a
smaller number havo voted than were registered,
This diacropancy is singular when it is known that
at Bichmond and ether cities the opposite result
.was obtained. Ibero ia no Conservativo party m

FRAUDULENT Vc TIN?.-A: samo of tho polls tho
dus?j voters were furnished with a plurality of
names, and tried them until they fou id one ti. at
fitted. The books cf registration wore oarofully
examined, and if the name first given was not
found on th? hat, others were offered, until a
lucky hit was midi), and the vote deposited. IQ
some oases no naot.o coull bo found, and tho in*
ventive genius of th? promising voter being et
fault, he was reluctantly compelled to withdraw
and try bis lue : r,t another poll. r.hrco ot tho
polls, the Palmetto, Stonewall and Washington
Engine Houses, were kept open beyond the oloslng
hour designated in the order, and a number of ad?
ditional votes wore received. According to the
rules by which elections were governed prior to
the war, those parties who neglected to deposit
thair votes before th) time appointed for closing
forfeited their privilege aa voters for that election;
hot In the present instant? the mo to appears to
have boen, 'The more the merrier." At tho Pal?

when the rush booamo general. The Washington

and a very large autaber of votes were polled.

boon after finns the above report, a motion woe
made before mo to filo a pe ition in the oause by a
largo number of tho depositors, whose deposits in
che aggregate amount to $350.000. In their peti?

stand in tho same right in regard to tho said Insti?

good right to be parties to any proceedings in
tnis Court for tho winding up of the affairs of the
said institution, either as complainants or defend?

they could not do, because tacy ditter very widely

spectfully anbaut, suould havo boon mado parties

And the prayer of tho petitioner is that an order

This Court is always anxious t) protect the rights
und interests of parties frought before it in thia
way, and they aro permitted to enjoy tho privile?

enjoyed Ly" tho defendants. As for instanco ni
filing cross bills, and not being bound by the alle?
gations of the Bills, &c. But if the practice was
sanctioned in such cases as that now under con?
sideration, I would be very reluctant to errant ?be
prayer of the pct.tion, because I havo been unable
to soo any benefit that wood accrue to thc peti?
tioners, by being permitted to iecurd their views
of their rights and interests in the pleadings of the
cause. And if granted in this instanco, other de?
positors might uereaf er bacome di9eati&fled with
som of the proceociings tu the causo, aud make
similar a plications, which might produc? great
and unnecessary dela\sin winding up the affaire
of th f Institution.
Tho motion to fllo tho petition is refuged,
