The down passenger train from Augusta, due hero yesterday morning, was detained by tho running off of the up freight train st tho thirty-three milo post. Cooper - was found near the South Carolina Passenger De? pot, shot in the back, and his ciao being past the ken of the police, he was sent to the City Hos? pital, where his back will be doctored. It appears that Cooper, having a fondness for roots, went potatoe-grabbiug on a farm up the road, but was unfortunately discovered and saluted with a load of small shot which wdt keep him out of potato fields tor somo timo. Tho huge canvass tent was surrounded by a motley crowd of small and large boys, who made savage sorties at the walls and endeavored to obtain a surreptitious cntraaoe. ABESST OF A MUEDSBEB.-The murder on Wad malaw Island reporte 1 in yesterday's issue will not prove like the Lyons caso, for a few hoars alter the news reached the city tho arrest was made. Preston Johnson a colored man having been re? fused by the girl to whom Lockwood was to have been married, was overheard to say, that he would bavo revenge if ho waited five years, and that rockwood should never many the girl. These remarks, in connection with bis absence from tho city at the time of tho mordor, and his return on the same day aroused the suspicions of Peter Robinson, colored, and led to his anest by the po? lice. Coroner Whiting promptly impanneled a [ jury, who examined a number of witnesses yester? day. Prom their uvidence it appeared that Pres? ton had been absent at the tim J and had given a confused account of himself. The footprints cor? respond exactly with the length of his foot-nine and a half inches. The testimony was clear, but Coroner Whiting deemed it advisabb to procure other witnesses from Rockville, and the jury was adjourned to Wednesday to h wait their arrival. At tho request of thu military, Lieutenant Hendricks dotailea officers Chapman and Gray to examine the occurrence, and, if possiblo, to trace thc perpetrators. This wis done, and four oolore 1 persons, t.vomon and two women, were arrested by Magistrate Tow, of Mount Pleasant, and sent to the city in charge of thu offioors. These pri? soners, namod respectively Jno. Richardson, Jas. Thomas, Becky Green, and Amelia Canasse, were examined before Magistrate? Kanapaox, together with other witnesses. The tostimooy showed plainly that Jim Thomas bas wilfully set the fixe, Be .ky Green voluntarily assorting that Jim bad told her that ''he would be even with Mr. Knox, or he would burn down his house." On the night of the fire Jim ha 3 left the house about 12 o'olook and came back before daylight, waking ber np and telling her to look at Mr. Knox's bouse burn ing. She asked him who sot it, and ho said thal he had done it. Thc other evidenoe corroborated Becky's statement, as Jim bad been irequentl? heard to make threats against Mr. Knox.
