GOOD WORK.-The steamship Saragossa, of eight hundred tone, belonging to the "Leary Line" of New York bteam packets, consigned to Messrs. Ravenel & Co., departed from this port yesterday. She nrrived on Monday with a good cargo, and was discharged and loaded in about forty-eight hours, showing tho most excellont management on tho part of her agents and all oonceined, and particularly of the steedore, Mr. Samuel Fox. The 8aragcssa is commanded by Captain M. B. Crowell, a mose competent and obliging offioer. There arrived on this line yesterday the large and superior iron steamship Matanzas, which vessel has excellent berths and passenger accommoda? tions, and will leave for ?ew York on Sa.uxu&y next. THE BLACK CROOK.-The present winter bids fair to rival its predecessor in the number and va? riety of entertainments furnished to thc public. Professor St. Maur is now delighting large au? diences with exhibitions of his skill in jonglerie. Dan Costello and John Robinson will both open their big shows in a few days; but the oro.vning glory is the Black Crook. It is' positively an? nounced that this entertainment will come off, as the theatre has been engagod cud the company secured, charleston will then have a new sonsa tion, and tho spectacular drama will be a spectaclo on which many eyes will be turned. Wo consider the Black Crook a bl. ssing in disguise, for it will brun; strangers to the city, cause a healthy circu? lation of greenbacks, provo an unfailing source of pleasure to thoso who do not object to foot lights and the other parapharnalia of a theatre. R AL ESTATE.-The influx of greenbacks has caused a perceptible rise in the value of real estate, andproperty that at one time could not be sold at any pnce, has recently been purchased at f>ir recs. This appreciation of real estate is a cheering sign of coming prosperity, and aken in connection with the present aspect of political af? faire, may ba considered a good omen of a bright future. Daring the summer, when business lan? guished and tho blues became an epidemic, every description ox property was sold at ruinously low prices; bnt that dull season is pa.-t, and we gladly chronicle a decided change for the better. Messrs. Leitch A Bruns sold on the 5th some valuable real estate in this city at almost ante bellum prices. A lot of land on Libeity street brought $5000, and one on Pitt street $1000. St. Maur possesses thc art of Ven? triloquism in the highest degree, and has brought it to a state of perfection that is seldom reached. His intonations are correct, and the Bound cannot be traced to the speaker. The magical perform * anees were wonderful. I: is impost i ble to describe them, but we are satisfied that no professor of legerdemain and tho blaok art could excel St. Maur in the rapidity and correctness of Lis different movements. The audience that attended last nigat will unite with us in stating that St. Maur is probably th? bes: performer that has appeared in Charleston. He will continuo his exhiDitions during the week, ?nd thus afford all who may ?o desire an opportunity to attend. FROM END TO END.-The piles of stones that at one time obstructed the passage in Broad .ureet. and caused many muttered aaathemas against the Citv Fathers, are at last removed. The street i. re-?pened; tho scene of confusion has been changed; each stone has been pat in it? proper place, aad a strong, substantial pavement laid. The travel, which had been stopped by the tearing up of the pavemont, has been resumed, and cars now run from end to end. The street railroad has become a public blessing, and the rumbling soaud of the cars and tho mer? ry tinkle of the bells are Uko musio to thc care of the tired passonger. Whilo the cars are thus ap? preciated, those who run with the machino should not be Defected. The conductors and drivers aro the pilots of the crafc.'aud their presence is ne? cessary at all times. Thc annual election of thc Board of Directors was held on the 4th, at which occasion only the Btockholders und friends of tho road partook of a eenerous collation: but the drivers and conductors were not forgotten. The following prisoners, convicted at the prose term of the Court, were sentenced November li Jefferson Williams-Assault and battery and t sault with intent to kill-Five months impriso meat. Frank Small-Larceny-Five months impriso ment. _ THE LYONS MD EDEE.-After twenty-three yea of doubt, distrust aud anxiety, tho perpetrator i the Lyons murder has confessed his crime, ai those on whom the taint of suspicion once rest? caa broatbe freer, as their innocence is now clea ly established. The letter received in this ci stated that Pappe, a notorious brigand, who wi executed for his crime, confessed on the scaffo that he had murdered Lyons and robbed the stor also that be was at the time employed by Mr. E; ping, in the drug business. On investigating tl matter, tho following history of Pappe was ol tained from Marshal Epping. Pappe made his appearance in this city aboi 1311, and then claimed to be a Hungarian and political refugee. By some means he succeedc ia introducing himself to Messrs. Simons, Eppin Sc Co., at that time wholesale druggists of th; city. He desired to be employed as & clerk, bt there being no vacancy he was refused, tboug after much solicitation money and drugs were ac vanced to him by Messrs. Simons, Epping & Co and he i pe ned a drug store at the Southwest coi ner of Vanderhorst sad Haag streets. The agree ment between the parties was that Pappe shoul pay in weekly instalments until the acoount wa settled. This was the only connection he ha with Mr. Epping, having never been employed i any capacity. Daring the timo that he remained in Charlesto he boasted of having received a aumbor of wound while in the Polish army, and said that he coule show over thirty scars. He also exhibited to Mi Epping a Utter which he had written to a coan tryman in Hamburg, who had harbored him pre vious to his leaving for America. This latter wa first published in tho Hamburg paper Freysohultz with editorial caujnient, which slated that Papp could be no other than Sohoberg, a, famous Hun gorian baadit. Tho letter was republished b several American papers, among them the Charles t ja Courier. Pappe became alarmed at this noto riety and strenuously denied having written th< letter or having over said that he had beea wound cl, and at the same time threatened Mr. Eppms to blow out his brainB if he divulged having seei the letter. Pappe succeeded in obtaining from Genera Schmerle, then Mayor of the city, a certificate at to his good character. This v. as given upon pa pers submitted by Pappe; Mr. Epping haviag mel Ge oral Schaerie in Broad street, after his en? dorsement of Pe ppe'a papers, rela'ed his suspicions but the General would not be convinced. Nothing more was heard from Pappe for some time, though he still continued his urug store in connection with the jewelry busiaess. Thc murder ot Lyoas is almost fresh in tbs memory of every one who w?s of age at that pe? riod, and it is useless to revive tho past. Pappe was aot suspected, and as he had been in the habit of selling jewelry tor some time, any accession to his stock waa aot noticed. He remained in the city for about twelve months alter this murder and then sold out and left for Paris. While in that city he was recognized by sn Austrian spy, who succeeded in gaining Ins confidence and induced him to visit Baden Radon. Ho was there arrested and imprisoned by the authorities, and from that time nothing wat? heard from him until his con? fession was received ia this oity. II. II. Tf you want cheat.
