Church Pariah. He worked the placo himself with
hut little assistance, we are informed, and has
raised four bales of fine Sea Island Cotton, worth
about one dollar per pound, say about one thou?
sand to twelve hundred dollars for tho crop, and a
sufficiency of vegetables and othor market pro.
duots as to enable him to purchase suoh articles as
he may desire, giving him the cotton to clear his
debt on the land, to which purpose ho ia now do

DEATH OF REY. TRACT R. WALSH.-WO regret to
learn, from the Bennettsville Journal, the death of |
the above-named well known Methodist minister.
Mr. WALSH for years has been ono of the foremost
members of tho South Carolina Conference, be?
loved and honored throughout its domain. He
founded, and for several years was President of
the Carolina Female College in AnsonvUle, N. C.
In 1861 he was pastor ol' Trinity Church in this
oity. During the past two years he was on the
Bennottsv?le circuit. He has been Bick for some
time, we learn from the Journal, and died on the
20th instant, leaving a large family, who have the
sympathies of a wide circle of friends, both in and
out of the Churob, to console them in their be?
reavement.

ence to W. J, CLAUSEN, Register in Bankruptcy.

Petit Jury dismissed until next Monday.
Ho.I FOB THE LAND OF FLOWERS.-It will.be seen
hy s notice in another column, that the fine
steamer City Point, Captain S. ADKINS, will re?
sume her trips from this city to Florida, touching
at Savannah and all the points on tho St. John's
River.
Florida has always been oloaoly connected with
Charleston, and the trade between the two points
was of oonsiderable importance previous to the
war. The cotton factors did a largo business with
that State, and the steamers wore always crowded
with passengers and freight. This trade has been
revived to a considerable extent, and the presence
of two steamers on the route is a sufficient indica?
tion that it has not decreased. Messrs. RAVENEL
St Co., the agents for the City Point, advertise
that she will loave on the firat of November, and
every subsequent Friday night, at 9 o'clook. She
will connect with the Georgia Central Railroad, at
Havannah, for Macon, Mobile and New Orleans.
The City Point baa been recently refitted, and has
excellent accommodations for taflsengers and
freight?. ^
NAVAL STORES.-The trade in rosin, spirits of
turpentine, Ac., the product of the pine tree, is a
branch of commerce that should, with bat little
encouragement, hugely dovelopo itself in the busi?
ness of this city. Tho pine region tributary to i
Charleston is extensive and valuable, much of it
never having been touched; the labor necessary to
produce the mark&ttblo commodity is free from
liability to distase, white mea being able to per?
form the work with impunity* and the demand for
the various articles very extensive io the markets
of the world. With proper facilities the business
might bo made one of great value to the etty. The
centre of the. trade here is the region near the
East end of Calhoun street, and vessels are con . '
staidly at Marshalls and Vennlng's wharves taking
in cargoes for various parts of the world. Mr. R.
T. WALKER, of our city, lately freighted the bark
Elgin for London, and Mesara. R. MUSE ft Coi. are
loading the British bark Artistic, and the British
brig Queen Of Britain, lor the Bristol Channel, and
have just cleared the British brig Bellona for the
?arno destination- The coastwise tnwlo is growing
tn volume, ?nd will increase with the enlargement
pf the crop.

T?yPBOTB "CT TUB F*PUR*. -The Tata storm and '
high wind <?f Sunday tught caused Homo lilt II dam
ago to property in the eily. On East Bay and
along tho exposed 8 tree ta the collara wore soon
tilled with water, whioh will cauao tho owners some
timo and trouble to remoro. DAN CASTELLO'S large
sign-board in Mooting street has a decided inclina?
tion toward the pavement, and bas been shorn of |
some of its glories by tho rough usage it has expe?
rienced. The streets have received a thorough
washing, sud the dust has boon effectually laid for
a few days, but tho oxea vat od lot? sud open collars
in the burnt district have boen transformed into
small ponds, whioh are neither useful or orna?
mental. On the Bay, the storm wau folt in its full
power. The Dictator, whioh arrived on Sunday
night, reported rough weather outside, and tho
Pilot Boy, whioh should have left yesterday morn?
ing, was compelled to put back ou account of the
storm. _
THBOUOH FREIGHT TARIFF ON RICE AND COTTON
TO CINCINNATI, LOUISVILLE AND ST. Lours.-We
are pleased to be able to announce that Messrs.
COURTENAY & TREN HOLM, outward freight agents
of the Baltimore and Charleston Steamship Com?
pany, will give through bills of lading for rice
and cotton to the above distant oitios, at the fol?
lowing very low ratos:
Rice. Cotton.
Charleston to cincinnati. O., per 100 Iba... .Boc. tl SO
Charleston to Lou lu vi Ile, Ky., per 100 lbs.. 73c. 1 70
Charleston to Ht. Louis, Mo., per IOU Iba_See. 3 10
Thie is certainly tho most enterprising and in?
viting tariff over offered, and will bo greatly appre?
ciated by rice shippers especially, who will And
ready salo for our Carolina grain in those populous
cities, and by distributing a portion of tho crop in
that direction, will rolievo the Now York market,
?Yo.
It may appear strange to have a "Cotton Bato"
from Charleston to the Northwest via Baltimore,
but statistics show that cotton manufactories havo
been largely devolopod in the last few years in tho
Northwest, and upon the basia of ouo and-a-half j
cents per pound to Cincinnati, as a contrai distri?
buting point, wo would not be surprised if ordor*
would seek this market. These aro good free trade
ratos, however, and we hopo steamships, railroads
and shippers will all profit by it.
? PROBABLE VISIT FROM THE BLACK CHOOK.--The
fame of the Black Crook has gone abroad over the
land, and there aro few persons who havo not heard
of the magical scenery and the beautiful danseus?
es. It has boon one of the best paying enterprises
of tho day, and while it has filled the pockets of j
the proprietors, it has at the samo time benefitted
overy city where it has been exhibited. New York
cnn boast of possessing the original Crook, but
the plays exhibited in other cities aro not without
their attractive features, and though their Crook?
edness is not so apparent, they'aro not without
their attractive features, and have boon patronized
by crowded houses. Tho citizens of Savannah
have for some time boon enjoying the Black Crook
sensation, but wo are happy to learn that tho Pal?
metto City has not boon forgotten. Tho managor
of tho play has made overtures to tho Hibernian
Society fer the use of their hall, and if successful,
will display the wonders or the Black Crook to a
Charleston audience. The addition to the Hiber?
nian Hall has been nearly completed, and the So?
ciety expect that in two weeks'time all of the in?
tended repairs will be finished, and the Hall open?
ed to tho public. A number of theatrical managers I ,
have already made applications for the use of the | t
Hall, and should the Black Crook fall, there will
be Borne histrionic representation in our new thea- I f
tie that will revive the recollections of the past. I ?
THE LATE RAIN.-That time-honored individual
tho "oldest inhabitant," was unable to recollect a
fiercer or more continuous rain than the one that
deluged our oity on Sunday night. Tho fall of
water was unusually heavy, and is estimated by
the rain guage of the City Registrar to have been
four inches 80-100. This amount of water, added
to the spring tide, whioh waa then at. its height
caused many of the streets bordering on^the rivers I i
to be submerged, and rendered a passage of the | t
stream almost impossible. In the Eastern portion
of the city, the low places North of Laurens street
were soon under water, Vernon, Inspection, and
the t -rm i nus of Calhoun streets being completely
covered. At the latter point scarcely any dry
land was visible from Washington street to tho
river, and the depth of the flood varied from a few
inohos to nearly three feet. Iii other sections of
the city, and wherever the tide bad any influence,
the water covered both the street and the side
walk, and in many instances it was necessary to
clear tho choked grates bofore it could be carried
off hy the drains. At tho lower portion of Market
street, near East Bay, the drains were soon filled,
and the water rose to some height. During tho
early part of the morning a number of negroes
collected around the crossings, and for some timo
the colored Charons did a brisk trade by carrying
over passengers on their shoulders at ten cents
por head.
MAYOR'S COUBT.-One of Afric's sable sons,
whose understanding was deficient, sought to
remedy the evil by appropriating; shoe leather be?
longing to Messrs. D. O'NEIL & 'JON. Unfortunate?
ly for him he was observed and captured, his booty
secured, and quarters assigned him where, for fif?
teen days, he can luxuriate on bread and water,
and curse the fickle jade fortune.
Four noble drinkists, who were firm believers in
bottled spirits, started out in different sections of
the town, but though divided in person, their pur?
poses were one. They were filled with the same
high aspirations, and proceeded solemnly to carry
out the same programme. The first nip was
merely an eye-opener, but the second closed the
optic, and left the owner in a muddled state
of uncertainty as to his whereabouts. Fortunately
there is in our city a class of men who devote their
time to such cases, and the immortal quartette were
raised from the mud and taken to the Head-Centre
of the order. Their sympathies and tastes were
in such unison that they were ordered to form a
Union League party, and were made to pay the en?
trance fee of $5 each immediately.
A colored Zantippe caught her liege lord by the
wool, and Jerked him about until he yelled murder.
His cries alarmed the police, who rescued him
from ber clutches, and she was fined $5 for con?
duct unbecoming a female African. The chocolate
dame teing out pf funds, her husband had to re?
spond, and he left thinking himself an ill-used
man, to be beaten and then to pay for the beater.
RADICAL DELEGATES TO THE CONVENTION.-Meet?
ings were held last night by the "members of the
Union Republican party" in this city, to eleot dele?
gates who should put in nomination nine delegates
to represent this District in the anticipated Con?
vention. The meetings were but poorly attended,
and the proceedings were not characterised by any
extreme confusion. A general programme had
evidently been prepared, and the machinery Work
od with gratifying smoothness.
When each meeting had organized, a long circu
lar was read from the State Central Committee,
which explained the mode of action that was to be
adopted. The principal points were, that tho
colored people should be industrious and united;
that they should denounce any opponent of their
party; that they should he secret in all their pro?
ceedings, and work with a will for the exaltation
of Radicalism, lt was provided that the ballots
should be kept secret until the day of voting; .hat
no changes in them should be made; that they
should be marked so that those voters who could
not read should know that they were voting the
right ticket, and that voters should take the whole
ticket, as nominated, or none.
After the reading of the circular, the meetings
proceeded to business, with the following results :

Malaria Everywhere.
Rarely bas there been a season as fruitful
his of malarious diseases. Not onlyon the prairies
nd in the valleys of the Weet ; not merely iu aU
he old haunts of Fever and Ague and Bilious Re
nlttent Fever have these prostrating diseases been
imisuaUy virulent ; but they have extended to towns
md cities never before infested with them, and havo
iven ascended the mountains and attacked thousands of
leoplo supposed to have been placed, by laws of Nature,
ibove their reach. Hence we are compelled to admit
hat a fatal element pervades the Universal Air this sea
ion, and should at once resort to the only approved pre?
ventive of its consequences, HOSTETTER'S STOMACH
UTTERS, a tonic so potent, an anti-septic so perfect, an
ilterative so irresistible, and a stimulant so pure that it
niables tho human system to resist and baffle aU the
indisposing causes of disease. With the confidence that
