SIMONS, who spoke in favor of tho plan originally

A GLACIER IN SOUTH CAROLINA.-A writer in
the Greenville Enterprise, of October 23, signing
himself "B. E. S." draws attention to a very inter?
resting geological feature in the Northern part of
the State. Ho says: "Adowa the valley of the
Enoree, through the many old fields that border
that stream, may bo seen long lines of dark
rounded rooks, vulgarly called "nigger-heads,'
but known in the books as "horne blende." These
rocks are not detached fragments of the gneiss
for mat iou that prevails hereabout, but evidently
foreigners from a'distantlatitude; they "li aVo boen
been borne hore br the embrace of tho ice-king; I '
tho genial climate hos 'm?!t-y! th?? glacier,' and ls*i
these indubitable monuments of its visit. So for
as observed, these rocks appear at intervals fer

Recompte on a false trail, bu' if their teachings are
correct, it is the only way to account for these
rocks. In high precipices like tho Table Book,
fragments are detached by alternate freezing and

will move along with it, and of course, deposited as
the glacier melts away."

The reasons assigned for this peculiar selection
of candidates are : First, that the white vote of
Chesterfield is greatly in excoss of the colored,
.nd is, thorefore, entitled to- exclusivo representa?
tion hi the Legislature. Second, that the colored
vois is largely in the majority in the Congressional
District, and therefore has a right to select tho
Congressman. Third, that the negroes aro in the
aseendant in the State, abd ought, Aherelor?, to
have one of their number to represent thc State in
