Hero whilst tho twilight dews
Are softly gathering on tba leaves and flowers,
I como, ob, patriot dead, to muse''
A few brief hours.
Hard bv you, rank on rank.
Rise the aad evergreens whoso solemn forms
Are dark as if they only drank
' The thunder storms.
Through the thick leaves around
The low, wild winds their dirge-like music poor,
Like tho fair Ocean's solemn sound
On its lone shore..
From all tho air a sigh,
Dirge-Rio, and souMlko, metan choir, wild.
Comes Ilks a mother's wailing cry
O'er her dead child.
Yonder, a little way.
Where mounds rise thick like surges of the sea,
Those whom ye met m fierce array,
ta*w *-?? * ..?*?? .
The same soft breezes sing.
The same birds chant their spirit requiem.
The same sad flowers their fragrance fling
O'er you sod them.
And pilgrims oft will griovo
Alike o'er Northern and o'er Southern dust,
And both to God's great mercy leave
In equal trust.
Ob ye and they aa foes,
Will meet no more, but calmly take your roi t;
The meek hands folded in repose
On each still breast.
No marble columns rear
Their shafts to blazon each dead hero's name,
Yet WOO, oh weU ye slumber hero.
Great sons of fame I
The dead as free win start
From tho unburdened as tho burdened sod,
And stand as pure in soul and heart
Before their God.
'Tis morn-as lone I stand.
The dawn ls reddening o'er each humble grave.
Oh when shaU night pasa from the Und
Ye died to save T
Through sU the upper air
May your life-blood in exhalations rise,
A ghostly cloud of red dispair
To traitor eyt a. ?
, , And may tho lightning diro.
Coiled in that olo-d, like vengeful scorpions dart
To blast with their keen fangs of fire
Each traitor heart
