dily progressing, and we hope by the close of the
week will be sufficiently advanced to permit the
street oars to resume their travel. The workmen
have already passed the comer of Church and
Broad streets, and the remaining portion is com?
paratively slight. From the piles of cobble stones
that now adorn the sides of Yendno Range, recon?
struction in that direction may be expected as soon
as the present labora of the contractor are comple?
ted.
R?TBENCHMENT-The Special Committee of |
Council appointed to prepare a Boheme for the
thorough retrenchment of tho municipal expenses,
have been in session for several evenings. No re?
port was made at the last meeting of Council, but
an extra meeting will be soon called, at which the
report will be submitted. The .Committee have
conducted their proceedings vpry quietly, and tho
publio.'can only surmise what tb? rotrenphmeut j
will bo, or whose head will be decapitated.
UNITED STATES COURT- -HON. GEORGE S. BEVAN
PRESIDING.-The case of the United States VB. J.
C. W, BISCHOFF, for the unlawful purchase of casks
with the inspector's brand not erased, was taken
np. B. C. PBBSSLET, Esq., appeared for the defen?
dant. The trial consumed the whole morning,
and resulted in tho full acquittal of the accused
In the case of JOHN MORGAN, charged with a
similar offence, tho Grand Jury roturned a finding
ot no bill, and not a true bill, as -was erroneously
stated.
MAYOR'S COURT.-Another candidate for the de?
gree conferred at the last sitting of the Court was
presented to the bar. On examination it appeared
that he thought it requisite to retire from the
world, and, atter buttoning bis waistcoat over the
poteen, he carelessly threw himself on the side:
walk, and, like the gallant soldier boy, made his
bed on the cold, cold ground. "Yet beautiful and
bright he lay" and calmly took his snooze, dream?
ing little that by day he would bo in tho caboose.
His papers wero examined and being countersign?
ed by SPINNER ho was declared a member of the
Loyal League of D. D.'s, known as dead ducks,
dead drunks, or Forneys.
No other candidates appeared, and tho business
being soon concluded, the Court adjourned.

their outward and inward passages, iq a proof that
the shipping business has not been affected by

A notice of the meeting of the stockholders of

the 19th, was received as information.
Sundry bills from the Alms House were referred

' The Board of Health, to whom was referred a

different churches controlled the burials to a suf?
ficient extent, and wat the cemeteries recently
oponed in tho Buburba had remedied the evil sui
floiently. It was, furthermore, bolioved that the
ovil would be entirely sradicated by time, and that
legislation was unnecessary. The report was
adopted. .,
The petition of W. C. D?KES ? Co. to oro ot ?
building for the. manufacture of fertilizers was
referred to the Committee on Brick and Wooden
Buildings.
