WEDNESDAY MORNING, OCTOBER 23, 1867.
A DREAM OF SUMMER.
BT JOHN O. ?WHITTIER.
Bland aa the morning breath of June
The Southwest breezes play;
And, through tts haze the Winter noon
Seems warm as Summer dsy.
The snow plumed Angel oi the North
Has dropped his icy spear;
Again the mosey earth looks forth,
Again the streams gush clear.
The fox his hill-side cell forsakes.
The muskrat leaves his nook.
The blue bird In the meadow brakes
Ia singing with the brook.
"Bear up, O mother Nature I " cry.
Bird, breeze, and streamlet free,
"Oar Winter voices prophesy
Of Summer days to thee I"
So. in those winters of the soul.
By bitter blasts and drear.
O'ar s wept from memory's frozen po's,
WIR sunny dsys appear.
Be ri ring Hope and Faith, they show
The soul its living powers.
And how beneath the Winter's snow
Lie germs of Sommer flowers I
The night Ls mother of the day,
And Wir tar of the Spring,
And ever r pcm old Decay
The greenest mosses cling.
Behind tho cloud the starlight lurks.
Through showers the sunbeams fall ;
For God, who loveth all Bis works.
Bas lett His hope with all.

YALE COLLEOE, November 10, im?6. )
I have always recommended tho Faber Polygrade
Lead Pencils as Ibo only pencils fitted for both ornamen?
tal and mathematical drawing; but, after a thorough
trial of tho American Polygrade Lead Pencils, man?
ufactured by the American Load Pencil 'Company, New
York, I find them superior to auy pencil in use, even to
the Faber or the old English Cumberland Lead Pencil,
being a superior pencil for sketching, ornamental and
mechanical drawing, and all tho ordinary uses of a lead
pencil.
These pencils aro very finely graded and have a very
smooth lead ; even the softest pencils hold thc point well;
they aro all that can bo desired In a pencil. It gives me
great pleasure to bc able to assure Americans that they
will no longer be compelled to depend upon Germany or
?ny other foreign market for penc-ls.

HORSE POWER MANITFACTURED.
In Introducing this new Power into the maiket,we
would shite that thc following aro some of the advan?
tages possessed bv the "LITTLE GIANT" over all other
Horse powers :
I. Its great strength on account of being double-geared,
which not only doubles the strength by dividing thi
strain on twice tho number of teeth, but by gearing on
both sides of tho wheels lt equalizes tho wear on the
shafts, and materially lessons the friction, enabling the
hordes to do much more work t --n with any other
Power.
2. Its compactness and extreme portability, it weighing
about one-halt as much as other Horse Powers, and occu?
py i UK but ouo-third tho space, it can be packed in small
boxes, thus earing much expense. It ls so simple that
tho most ignorant porson would have no difficulty In
putting lt together.
3. Thc laoility with which it can be adjusted to any
kind of machinery at any anglo, either on tho ground or
over head, without moving lt from its foundation, will
be appreciated by runners ami planters as specially adapt?
ed for driving Cotton Oins.

PHILADELPHIA UNIYEESITT
OF
MEDICINE AND SURGERY.
rHE PHILADELPHIA UNIVERSITY OF MEDICINE
AND SURGERY was organized in 18+8. Chartered
ty the L?gislature, February 26.1853. Nara e changed
ly a legislativo enactment to the Eclectic .trtnl ?cal Col
age, of Philadelphia, in 180c In 18G3 it purchased the
?ennaylvauia Medical College, established in 1342, and
be Philadelphia Medical College, which had previously
icen merced into the Pennsylvania Medical college, tu
864 it purchased tho Penn Medical University. Tile
Prustecs of the separate schools united, petitioned and
ibtalned a special Act of tho Legi.' ature, consolidating
hese institutions and cha. ging their names to that ot the
Philadelphia University of Medicine and Surgery,
darch 15,18G5. All th. se various Acts are publi lied in
he statutes of Pennsylvania. The cost of the I nilding
md museum was over one hundred thousand dollars, lt
viii bo observed that the University, as now organized, is
lie legal represen Uti vo of tho four Medical Colleges that
t has absorbed. It is a liberal school of medicine, con
incd to no dogma, nor attached lo any medical clique
mt embraces in its teaching everything of value to the
profession.
Sessions.-lt hos two tull sessions each year, commenc
ng on the 1st of October, and con tinning until the isl ot
January, as its first session, and from the lat ot January
a the 1st ol April, as its second; the two constituting one
?nil course of lectures. It has also a summer session,
commencing tho 1st April and continuing until August,
Tor the preparatory branches, such as Latin, Greek,
Mathematica. Botany, Zoology, Chemistry, Anatomy
Physiology, otc.
Ticket*.-Tickets to the full conreo of lectures $120. or
160 for each session. For thc summer or preparatory
course $26. Graudatlng lee $30. To aid young men of
moderate means, tho University has issued five hundred
scholarships, which ore sold to first-course students for
$75. and to second-course students and clergymen for
{50, ce ch constituting thc holder a lifo member, with the
perpetual privileges of tho lectures, and all the teachings
or the achoo!. Tho only additional fees are a j early dis?
secting and matriculating ticket, each of which ls $5.
The Advantages of Scholarships.-The student holding a
scholarship can enter the College at any time during the
year, attend as long aa he chooses, and re-enter the insti?
tution as ficquentiy as de-ired.
It requires no previous reading or study to enler the
University on scholarships, hence, all private tuition fees
arc saved.
Students, by holding scholarships, can prosecute other
busine8*. a part of the time.
The candidate for graduation can present himself at
any time, and re?oive his degree as soon a* qoallflod.
In case a stu 'ent should hold a scholarship and not be
ablo to attend lectures, it can be transferred to anothor,
thus preventing any loss.
Parents, guardians or friends of students wishing to
purchase scholarship lor them a year or more bet?re
their attendance at the University, can secure them by
advancing one-half tho price and paying the balance
when tho student enters. Physicians and benevolent
men can bestow great benefit upon poor young men by
presenting them a scholarship, and thus enabling them
to OD tain an honorable profession.
The Faculty embraces seventeen eminent physicians
and surgeons. The University has associated with it a
large hospital clinic, whete every form of medical and
surgical disease is operated on and treated in the pres?
ence of the class.
COIXKOE BUILD mo.-The College building, located in
Ninth street, south of Walnut, ls tho finest in the city.
Its front la collegiate gothic, and is adorned with em
battlements and embrasures, presenting s novel, bold,
and beautiful appearance. The facade ls of brown stone,
ornamented by two towers, rising to the elevation of
eighty feet, and crowned with an embattled parapet
The building contains between fifty and silty rooms, all
