ACKNOWLEDGMENT.-Our thanks are due Mr. DE LACT, of tho Mills House Book stand, for late papers. HUNDREDS relieved by Erse OF PATS. FORENSIC CLUB.-We learn thai the moot court of this Club holds its session this evening in the Court House. The ease on the docket is one con? cerning tho collection of interest on a note diriug the war. We are authorized to state that the doors are open to the pubUc, and as the question is one that involves important issues, we have no doubt but there will bc a large audience present. -o TOWN talk is the KINO OF PAIN. -o TBE MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS.-It wiil be seen from the Proceediug8 of Conned that General CANBY has notified tho Mayor that no elections will take place. Whether the present incumbents will re? tain their positions or be relieved by military ap? pointees remains to be seen. Geueral CANDY is very reticent, and the public will have to wait un? til the expiration of the present municipal term, when his views will be made known. GROWING in popularity daily-Knot OP PAIN. SKA ISLAND COTTON.- We have reoeived from a correspondent at Beaufort, 8. C., a sample of sea island cotton that for silkiness and fineness of tis? sue is equal to any raised before the war. Unfor? tunately no statistics were sent, and we can form no estimate of the damage done by the caterpillar; bnt if the portion of the crop spared turns out as well as that before us, sea island cotton will con? tinue to command a high price. EVERYBODY'S Doctor-KIMO cr TAIS. BBOAD STBEIT.-The work on this street is stea? dily progressing, and we hope by the close of the week will be: sufficiently advanced to parmit the street cars to resume their travel. Tho workmen have already passed the corner of Church and Broad streets, and tho remaining portion is com? paratively slight. From the piles of cobble stones thai now adorn thc sides of Von o ne Range, recon? struction in that direction may be expected as soon as the pi osent, labors of tho contractor are comple? ted. : " !:" RETRENCHMENT.-The Special Committee of Connell appointed to prepare a scheme for the thorough retrenchment of the municipal expenses, have been in session for several eveaiings. No re? port waa made at thc fast meeting of Council, but an extra meeting will be soon called, at which tho report will be submitted. The Committee have conducted their proceedings very quietly, and the public can only surmise what the retrenchment will be, or whose head will be decapitated. UNITED STATES COURT-HON. GKOROE S. BRYAN PEESIDLNO.-The case of the United States os. J. C. W. BISCHOFF, br the unlawful purchase of casks with the inspector's brand not erased, was taken up. B. C. PB&SJLEY, Esq., appeared for the defen? dant. Tbe trial consumed the whole morning, and resulted in the full acquittal of the accused. In tb? case of JOHN MOKOAN, charged with a similar offence, the Grand Jury returned a finding ot no bill, and not a true bill, as was erroneously stated. MAYOR'S COURT.-Another candidate for the de? gree conferred at the last sitting of the Court was presented to the bar. On examination it appeared that he'thought it requisite to retire from the world, and, alter buttoning his waistcoat over tu~> poteen, he carelessly thr? w himself on the side? walk, and, like tho galla't: soldier boy, mad' ' is bed on the cold, cold gr jund. "Yet beautiful. -id bright he lay" and calmly took his snooze, dream? ing little that by day he would be in the cal se. His papen were examined and being countersign? ed by SEIN NEB he was declared a member of the Loyal League of D. D.'s, known as dead ducks, dead drunks, or Forneys. No other candidates appeared, a?d the business being soon concluded, the Court adjourned. DISTRICT COURT-HON. G. W. Loo AN PRESIDING. The State cs. Michael McGorty-Receiving Stolen Goods. M. P. Tm: KING STREET BAZAARS.-This popular tho? roughfare presents an appearance of business lift that is in pleasing contrast with other sections ol the city. The large rot.iil dry goods houses which aro the chief glory of the street, present a tempt? ing appearance, and tho sight of some new style of goods frequently causes tho money to burn in the pocket until tho exchange is effected. Promi? nent among these stores is the establishment of Messrs. Louis COHEN A Co. This has been re? cently stocked with choice goods for tho Fall aud Winter trade. Every effort has been made to se? cure a full aud completo assortment of every arti? cle found in a first-class dry goods store, and from a casual glanco wo aro convinced that Mossra. COHEN & Co. are up to tho mark. We do not, how? ever, presume to let their reputation depend on oitr dictum. They will be tried by tho fair sex; but wo guarantee that they will not bo found wanting. THE BALTIMORE STEAMSHIP LINE.-Wo have fre? quently referred to lilia Uno, and tho facilities it presents to shippers for the safe and speedy trans? mission of freights. The business of tho line has been, since its formation, steadily increasing, and the steamers now loave with the greatest regu? larity, eaoh with its full compliment of freight. Messrs. COURTENAY & TRENHOLM, tho outward agents, have opened an offico on East Bay, next North of Adger's South Wharf. This has boon done for tho convenience of shippers, who can communicate with the agents witnout the neces? sity of visiting the wharf. The increasing busi? ness of the line has rendered this change neces stry, as the arri'als and departures occur with such regularity that dispatch is an important item in the shipments. Tho '.inn at present consists of tho Falcon, Soa Gull and Patapaoo, and tho fart that these vu?als are alw.iv? ;.ble to secure good freights, both for their ontward and inward passages, is a proof that the shipping business lita not boen affected by staghorn The agents at either eiK? of tho lino har"n used every exertion to advance the intorosta of this trado, and have hal the satisfaction of see? ing their efforts crowned with success. REGULAR MEETING OP Om COUNCIL.-Present, fae Mayor; Aldermen RAVENEL, GERDTS, OUEUX, WILLIS, STETNMEYER, OLNEY, OAKES, MARSHALL, ENSTON, COSGROVE, COURTENAY, PRINGLE, WRAOG and BUTLER. .. The minnies of the last mooting were read and confirmed. Tho petitions of JNO. W. HALL for a licenso to pack loose cotton on Brown's Wharf, and of E. W. SPENCER to Open an Exchango and Loan Office, were referred to the Committeo on Licenses. The return of the Harbor Master fox the past months waa received as infcrmath% j A notice of the meeting of the stockholders of the Cheraw and Darlington Rulroad, to bc held on the 19th, was received as information. 8ondry bills from the Ahns House were referred to tho Committeo on Accounts. The Board of Health, to whom was referred * communication ol Dr. PAGE relativo to intermural burials, B ta ted that tho existing regulations of the different churches controlled the burials to a suf? ficient extent, and that the cemeteries recently opened in tho suburbs had remedied the evil suf? ficiently. It was, furthermore, believed that the evil wc old be entirely eradicated bj time, and that legislation was unnecessary. Tho report was s lopted. The petition of W. C. DUKES & Co. to erect a building for tho manufacturo of fertilizers was referred to the Commitlee on Brick und Wooden Buildings. / , ; Tho Mayor stated that the following Order had been received from tho District Headquarters : HEADQUARTERS SECOND MILITARY DISTRICT, ) CH ARLES TU K, S. .C., October 19, 18177. | His Honor Mayor P. C. Gaillard, Charleston, S. C. Su-I am instructed by the Commanding Gen? eral of this District to inform you that no election will bo held for municipal officers for the City of Charleston, S. C., and tho election notice prescri? bed by the ordinances of tho city will not bo pub? lished. Very respectfully, sir, Your obedient servant, LOUIS V. CAZ LARC, A. D. C., A. A. A. G. Messrs. WM. H. GILLILAND, C. P. FRASER and JNO. H. HONOUR were severally nominated for tho office of City Assessor, but on motion of Alderman MARSHALL the election was postponed to a future mooting. Thia caused somo discussion among the Aldermen, but it was finally carried. Thc Committee on Engrossed Acts reported for engrossment the Bill to mise suppli?e for tho li? quidation of tho interest on the public dobt which accrued on September 90th. Systems Run Down. Persons oftou allow their systems to "run down," or ratbor run them down by over-work, accompanied by a neglect of thc proper means of invigoration. Thc result is ?hal is called "GENERAL DEBTUR :" i'l other words, a failure anj partial collapse of the physical forces, accom? panied, usually, by great depression ol spirits. The host remedy in such casca is HOSTETTER'S STOMACH BITTERS. Whether the state of exhaustion has been brought on by excessive physical labor, dissi p dion, anxiety of mind, exp asure, or any ether cause, the remedial effect of this great stomachic will be found equally prompt and cet tum. As a restorative, after severo sickness has prostrated thc bodily and mental ?nergie?, it is pronounced by competent medical au? thority "THE BEST TONIC IN USE." If men were not foolishly careless about their health, mid ovor-eouttdent in themselves, they would always, when engaged in any work Uiat required great exertion, use corresponding moans of sustaining their strength. For this purpose HOSTETJTER'S BITTERS are invaluable. All toilets should use them as au invigorant. For those constantly employed in iu-door occupations, .especially in crowded workshops, they may be reckoned as the very best safeguard of health. Where thoro is a predisposition to constipation, or a tendency to bilious? ness, they may be truly Faid to bc a specific for which there is no substitute. f. October 21 Know thy Destiny. MADAME E. F.
