SAVANNAH, October 14.?Cotton.?The market open
ed quite active at firmer prices, and with o better general
feeling. Transactions took a practical shape when buyer
and seller met upon a basis which showed a mutual dis
position for business. The day's work summed up the
largest solos of the season, and the market closed with
out that lethargy and irregularity wbloh has of lute
characterUod it.
Hie favorable advices from Liverpool in the morning,
and the dispatch in the afternoon announcing an ad
vanoe of Kc in New York, were the main springs which
Influenced activity and helped to somewhat regulate
prices.

opened this morning with a moderate inquiry, and a
prospect Of a limited, business, but notwithstanding the
unfavorable accounts from Liverpool and New York?
those from the former bringing a further decline of^d?
the demand became more active, subsequently, and the
sales reached 100? bales, taken by seven buyoi s, mostly
for export. It was expected that the nows would oause
an additional faUlag off In rates, but factors were unwil
ling to give way, and steadily maintained their position,
compelling buyers who wero under the necessity of till
ing tnelr orde-a to pay full prices for the better qualities.
I)Is nevertheless rather JitUcuit to give regular quota
tions. Ordinary is nominal. Low Middling has sold
both at IT and 18c, but In exceptional cases on which we
cannot base quotations, in tact, slmUar instances could
be cited in all descriptions. Under these circumstances
ws quote Ordinary nominal, Good Ordinary 16 a 16We
Low Middling 17 Kc, Middling 18>i a 19c.
There are a number of orders pending here, and if
planters will press forward the crop it will meet a ready
sale at fair prices compared with other markets. The
sales for the past tliree days sum up 2550 bales, making
a total for the week ol 3900, against 2626 laut week, sud
1060 she week before. The receipts proper lor the week,
exoluding the arrivals from Mobile. Florida and Texas,
which are included in their respective statements, com
prise 4428 bules, against 3262 last week, showing an In
crease ot 1161 bales. The week's exports embranre 2116
bales, all coastwise. The demand during the past three
days has been partly for the North and partly for Great
Britain, France and Spain.

Pennsylvania Medteal College, established in litlft. und
the, Philadelphia Medical College, which had prevkiiady
been merged into the Pennsylvania Medical College. ?n
1864. it purebased the Penn Medical University. Tiic
Trustees of the separate schools united, petitioned ana
oblaiued a special Act of the Lopisiaturo, consolidating
these lusUtutiouB and changing their naines to that of the
Philadelphia University of Medicine and Surgery,

perpetual privileges of tho lectures, aud all the teachings
or the school. The only additional fees are a y early dis
secting and matriculating ticket, each of which Is $6.
77ie Advantages of Scholarships.?Tho student holdtug a
scholarship can enter tho College at any time during the
year, atteud as long as hechooHcs, aud re-enter the Insti
tution as frequently as dc.lred.
It requires no previous reading or study to enter tho
University on scholarships, hence, all private tuition fees
are saved.
Students, by holding scholarships, can proBecutu other
business a vart of the time.
The candidate for graduation can present himself at
any time, and receive his degree as soon as qualified.
In cases stunent should hold a scholarship and not bo j
able to attend lectures, it can bo transferred to another, I
thus preventing any Iobr.
Parents, guardians or friends of students wishing to
purchase scholarship tor them a year or moro before
melr attendance at the University, can secure them by
advancing one-halt the price and paying the balance
when the studont enters. Physicians and benevolent
men can bestow great benefit upon poor young men by
presenting them a scholarship, and thus enabling them
to obtain an honorable profession.
The Faculty embraces seventeen eminent physicians I
and BUngeons". The University has associated with it a |
large hospital clinic, wheie every form of medical aud
surgical disease Is operated on and treated In the pres
ence of the class.
college. Buildlno ?The College building, located in
Ninth street, south of Walnut, is the finest iu the city.
Its front is collegiate gothic, aud is adorned with em
battlements and embrasures, presenting a novel, bold,
and beautiful appearance. The facade is of brown stone,
ornamented by two towers, rising to the elevation of |
eighty feet, and crowned with an embattled parapet.
The building contains between fifty and sixty rooms, all I
supplied with water, gas, and every other convenience
that modern improvement can contribute to facilitate
medical instruction. Only five hundred scholarships
will bo issued, and as two hundred and fifty are now
sold, those who wish to secure one should do ao at once.
Money can be remitted by oxpresB, or a draft or chock
sent on any National Bank in the United states, when
the scholarship will be returned by mail, signed by the
