DEATH OF T. P. ALLEM, ESQ.-The Greenville
Enterprise brings the sad intelligence of the deatli
of Mr. ALLEN, which occurred at his residence, ir
that town, on Monday last. Mr. ALLEN was s
New Englander by hirth, but cam? to this citj
when quite young, and for many years conduotoc
a school with great success. He subsequently be?
came connected with tho firm of MCCAKTEB &
ALLEN, but had retired from business previous tc
the war, and purchased a farm near the city. Du
ring the war he removed to Greenville, S. C., one
remained a citizen of that place until his death
FREIGHTS.- The largo amount of nierehandisi
now being shipped to this place from Northen
ports, intended for ajl points in the South ant
West, and the heavy increase in the arrival of cot
ton from the interior to be shipped to the Nerti
and Europe, has induced considerable activity ii
freights, and several.-. large ships are now on thi
berth for Liverpool. Tho demand for room ii
steamers bound North is muoh ahead of the sup
ply, and freights from here harv? temporarily takei
a rise. Our steamship agents have placed on ud
ditional steamers. Among them Messrs. J. & 1
GETTY have the Prometheus; Messrs. ST REF.
BBOTHKBS SC Co., and Cou ?TEN AY & TRENHOLM ei
peet the Eclipse, the James Adger and the Rhod

Co. look for the Saragossa. We may, in const
quence, expect lively times in the freighting busi
ness during tho Winter.
TAXATION OF RAILROADS.--We obtain the folio?
ing information from the Columbia Phrenix : Ai
other very interesting case commenced yest erda
evening, before Judge" MOSES. The point is I li
^egality or constitutionality of the tax imposed t
the last Legislature on the gross income of rai
roads. The Charlotte and South Carolina Railroa
- made their return under the law, and made a
rangements to pay the tax. The Greenville Rai
road made its return, bat did not pay tl
tax, and an execution to collect the tt
was issued. Th? ? South Carolina Railrot
made no return, and was double taxed, a
cording to the provisions of the law, and an uxeci
lion was issued therefor, upon which tho latt*
corporation has presented a petition, praying for
prohibition against the collection of the tax. Th

TRINITY CHURCH SABBATH SCHOOL.-The Sacrt
Concert advertised in Saturday's Nsws passed <
very pleasantly yesterday afternoon. The chun
was crowded, a large number of the little ones b
ing present. One of the ladies connected with tl
school presided at tho melodeon. The singh
was excellent, the little songsters all 'joining wit
the spirit and with all their might.
In the absence of the Superintendent, Ul
dent, read t-ne Beim-aiihu-Ajustant Superinte

learn that the school was open twenty-three Sal
baths during the pact six months. Average a
tendance of preachers twenty, and of scholars o

sereu. There heve been, flfty-four scholars i
mitted, and twenty-eight have withdrawn. I
death hes occurred in this school the past i
months. Thirteen from the school have join
the church. The roll now consists of twenty-eig
officers and teachers (fifteen malos and thirte

Dr v ru on MB. JAMKS PHYNNEY.-On Saturday
the family of Mr. JAMBS PHTNNET, recoived a tele?
graphic dispatch from Richmond, anuounoing
his death in that city on Friday, the 11th instant.
Mr. I'U?NNI v left this oity some two weeks since,
and proceeded to Rjohmond, with a view to try
the ofthota of a change of air on his health,
which had been failing for some4 time. In the de?
cease of Mr. PHYWNEY , the Printers of Charleston
have lost one of the most estimable of their num?
ber. He will long bo remembered for his quiet
and uuobtrusivo mauuers. Mi'. PHYNNY was a
native of this city, and was in tho fifty-second
year of his ago. We sympathize with his rela?
tives in their bereavement.
AJTFAJBS IN SOOTH CAROLINA.-A correspondent
of the Now York limes, writing from Charleston,
on the 4th instaut, says : "Along tho seaboard
general bankruptcy must ensue during the coming
winter, unless creditors should prove vastly more
lenient thau creditors usually are. Nearly every
plantation is more or loss mortgaged, and should
foroclosoures be insisted upon, the best lands in
this State will change hands at a ruinous sacrifice.
The lawyers aro preparing to reap a rich harvest
out of the oases uuder the new bankrupt law, for
there will probably be no portion of tho Union that
will contain as large a number of insolvents, in
proportion to the population, as South Carolina,"
MUSTKBIOUB .DEATH.-On Saturday evening
Coroner WHIT INO was notified of a death at MUR?
PHY'S Boarding House, that demanded an inquest.
It appeared that TUON. NUGENT, a man about thir?
ty-seven years of age, and from New York, had
been boarding at MURPHY'S, NO. 2 Queen street,
for two weeks. On Saturday afternoon about four
o'clock, he came homo and soon became rapidly
sick. While bo was lying on a sofa, apparently iu
a dying condition, a message was sent for the
Rev. Mr. YATES, who instantly repaired to the
boarding house, together with his son, Dr. JO?
SEPH A. YATES. Before their, arrival, the man had
died, and Mr. YATES observing an undue haste
manifested in the preparations for the burial,
promptly notified the Coroner. Mr. WHITING was
soon on the spot, and after impauneling a jury who
viewed tho body, they were discharged until Mon?
day T.eek, tu cutter HI aiiow ur. YATES full time for
a poal mortem examination and a chemical analy?
sis of the contents of the stomach, grave suspi?
cion being aroused by the suddenness of the
death, the man having been seen well, hearty
and sober at 2 o'clock the same day. He was
supposed to have some $1600 in his possession,
but only $150 could be satisfactorily accounted for.
The matter will be thoroughly investigated, and
if any guilt is attached to hts late associates, they
will be.speedily indicted for'.the crime.
I THE FEAST OP TABERNACLES,-OB "SUCCOTH."
This is the first day of the Festival of Huts, and
for the information of our non-Israelite road
1 era, we proceed to give a description of it, copied
from the source to which we have been indebted
on several previous occasions. CHAMBERS says :
On the evening of the 14th day of Tisbri, the Feast
of Tabernacles, commences. (Lev. xxiii. 42.) The
interval between the Day of Atonement and this
festival is employed in preparations for this fes?
tive period. Each family fits up some room
especially built for this purpose-for a booth, or
erects ono in the courtyard or garden.. The un
genial climate of the North, and the advanced
season of the year (generally late in September),
will not allow the Jew to make the booth his regu?
lar dwelling-place during the festival ; but be at
least takes his meals in it. Another peculiarity of
this festival is the use of a branch of a palm-tree,
of a willow, myrtle, and citron. It is these which,
according to tradition, are meant by Leviticus,
xxiii. 40. The willow branch aud the myrtle are
tied to the lower part of the bough of the palm?
tree, but tho citron is kept separate ; and it is the
duty of avery congregation to provide these re?
quisites for the use of the members. There are,
however, few religious Jews who, if they can
afford it, do not procure them for their private
use. Grasping the palm brandi with the right
hand, and with the left the citron, and holding
them close together, a benediction expressive of
the occasion is pronounced, and the branch slightly
shaken. This ceremony is gone through i every
morning during, the seven days of the festival, and
by each individual separately. No Jew would taste
food before the performance of this rite.
The eighth day should properly so conclude the
festival ; but rabbinical authority has added a
ninth, under the title of 'Rejoicing with the Law.
This, as its name betokens, is a day of great mer?
riment, in which even the greatest- rabbis-of
course in their own way-take part, expressive of
their delight iu, and attachment to the law, the
last section of which is publicly chanted in the
synagogue: for the Pentateuch is divided into
fifty-four sections, according to the number of
Sabbaths contained in an intercalary year ; and on
each Sabbath, beginning with that following this
festival, its respective portion is read, so that the
whole cycle is completed on the Sabbath before, or
rather, as established by custom, on that festival.
The 'synagogues dh this occasion exhibit scenes of
extraordinary bustle, and not rarely also of up?
roarious joy. In the evening the places of wor?
ship are crowded, and the boys are seen entering
with little gaily-painted banners and wax tapers in
their hands. The synagogues are most sump?
tuously lighted ; and before the ark generally glit?
ters a veil of very costly materials,- not unfre
quontly gorgeously bedecked with pearls and
precious stones.
After a short service the veil is drawn back, the
ark opened, and the scrolls of the Law-covered
with costly stutts, and occasionally also with plates
of precious metal-are solemnly banded by the
beadle to various persons summoned by name to
the ark for that purpose. This done, a portable
canopy, carried by* neveral youths, is extended
over the minister and wardens, who, with the
serous in their hands, head a solemn procession,
which is joined by all other hom ers of scrolls, the
youth, and the little boys, the latter holding in
theh* hands the banners alluded to, at the tops of
which lighted wax tapers are fastened, all chant?
ing hymns in praise of the Law.

GENTLEMEN : I uood, during the pust season, one of
"Ingersoll's Portable Cotton Presse?,' purchased of you
last September. I have always been prejudiced in favor
of the "Screw Press," and nothing but dlr? necessity in?
duced rn? to try any other. I take pleasure, however, in
adding my testimony In favor of its entire adaptation to
tho wants ot a-cot ton plantation. It has surpassed nj y
moat sanguine expectations. I have packed with but
two hand?, yet I prefer four-two ut each lover. My
bales all weighed ever OOO lbs. The Ant lot! sent to
market averaged 6021 bs. My Impression la that ?00 lbs.
is about the capacity of th? Pres?, and a greater number
?j? pounds subject ihe foiiow.block to too much nlak, un?
less the sides of the cotton box waa increased. It would
add greatly to the value of the Preas if the cotton box
was ten inches longer. In haste, I am, very respectfully,

GENTLEMAN : I nave Just received your letter Of Feb.
mary 14th-upon my return to thia place; altee an ab?
sence of two .months-and this reply may be too late for
yonr "Descriptive Circular of Ingersoll's Cotton Press."
The Prent I used in packing my cot ton ?last year
worked admirably, packing, with ease from SOO. to 630
lb?. With good-active hands to work it, I am satisfied
that from eighteen to twenty balsa might readily ba
packed itt a day.
This Peens combine? the advantages of Ughtnesa, and
consequent portability sud simplicity (being aaaUy man?
aged by any one or ordinary intelligence). Great com?
pre laing force, with little motive., power, and "last, but
not least," lt 1? worked entirely by hand, thoa caving for
the farm horses the hard labor Imposed upon them by
the nae of the ordinary "Screw."
