THE LETTER TO THE DEAD.
[Iron the XortJirrn Monthly.]
We remember at the Wilderness a gallant M^aissippian
had fallen, and at night, just before burying him, there
came a letter from her he loved bi st. One of the group
around bin body-a minister-whose tenderness was
womanlv, broke the silent tearfulness with whl. h he saw
the dead letter ; be took it and laid it upon the breast of
*i*n whose heroic heart waa still: "Bury it with him.
He will see it when he wakes." It waa the sublimest
sentence of his funeral sermon.-.V. 0. Picayvnt.
Cornea the letter from a mother ?
Are a sister's longing there?
Or the fondness of another.
Loved and loxing, young and fair t
Seek not now to know the writer,
Seek not whence or why it came ; %
Aa he died his dimmed eyes saw her ;
As he died, he breathed her name.
It has come o'er hills and valleys.
Crossed o'er rivers, passed o'er lakes ;
"Bury it upon his bosom,
He will ses it when he wakes."
Bury the <Lsad with the letter unread.
There to remain,
Till the soldier awakes from bia slumber,
To join m the battle again.
Ah I but never more to battle
He will march by beat of drum ;
Nevermore when fight ts over
sigh ior gentle peace to come ;
Never more to roll-call answer.
Nevermore will pace bis round.
Keeping watch o'er sleeping comrade*
Strewn upon the chilly ground :
Nevermore the light words utter
Win?* his heart with sadness aches :
''Bury it upon his bosom,
He ?ill see it when he wakes."
Bury it deep with the soldier to sleep :
There let it lie.
Wk'le the green grass grows o'er the sleeper.
And the world goes hurrying by.
She who linc er ed ss she wrote it
O'er each tender word abe penned,
She perchance will find her sorrow
With some later lover end.
But for him those words of loving
slay survive when time ls o'er,
And, though she forget her fondness.
Oreel bun on the further shore.
Cross bia arms and close his eyelids,
Tis bia slumber that be takes :
"Bury it upon his bosom,
He will see it when be wain a"
Lay him to rest with the scroll on his breas :,
There, m the tomb.
Till the stained dead shall awaken
At the terrible day of doom.

SAVANNAH, October 10.-COTTON. -Th? market, ame?
our last Laue, has manliested consid uable changes-one

Controlling markets have been received-and we cloe?
very dull, on tho adverse accounts, with some inquin
for the better gradea, bet a total neglect of the lowei
qualities, which are held at figures vhich buyees are nol

Crop recounts are growing better every day, and plan
tara are realizing more out out of tieir crops than thej
anticipated. The suple has materltHy improved, while
the bulk ot the receipts do not seem to be of nearly a?
wen prepared a style aa ia any former year. We look,
however, for Improvement hence foi th, owing to the pr??
sent fine picking weather. To-day ia genial and warm.
Oar estimate of o rep seems certain to be realized, and
higher figures for the yield are freely spoken of. Plan
teri who two months ago were exceedingly gloomy, arc
now writing hopefully, and their views aa to their owe
and their neighbors' crops are becoming extended con.
siderably. For instance, one man who thought be would
not make 100 balea, sow writes that he mav send to hie
factors 150 biles.
Such opinions being entertained by onr own people,
and with the flattering adriena received in Europe from
India, Egypt and Brazil, wa can look for no enhancement
of price?, and it seems to us that the holding back of cot?
ton will, if carried out, be mic.dal <o the grower, aa nc
disaster to the crop of this country can now have an;
effect on the markets of the world commensurate witt
the risk run of considerably lower prices. If the crop
were held back, and we did recover a cent or two, we
must remember that the. cotton has got to find un outlet,
and that when the quantity so held back should be push
ted forward to meet any possible advance, it would tend
to depress the marketa more thoroughly than by a grad
nal supply, and where one man might benefit, a thousand
would be suffere: s. The depreciation in prices under s
just legislation doing away with the cotton tax and pass?
ing laws for tue control and payments of labor, accord?
ing to prices received, may again place u? ia the Queen
dsncy ss comparec?, with producta, ; cour ...es, for if prop?
erly foe ?ired we should be able to compete with any o:
the other countries in point of cheapnes and quality; and
by suer competition we may produce cotton at prices ai
which they will have to abandon it.

FREIGHT MAE KIT.
On the exportation of prc duce and its effects, a New

dense as follows:
"The shipping interest suddenly finds itself iu a vastly
Improved position, after a prolonged period of depres

wasted ls liberal quantities to supply the d?ficiences ls
the crops of Western Europe, and la now going forward

freight at ratee that barely en diced to pay for taking lt in,
and earned no more than wis requisite to ballast them;
whereas the ratee now being paid on bresdstuffs have noi
often been exceeded.
The Glasgow steamer hs s been paid 12d sterling pei

Will this bring any revival of ebipbuildins '? probably

Wages of shipbuilding mechanics are not now a aton?
ally higher than they were before th- war, and ship tim
bor from its long dullness, can be bought nearly as well
as then. Articles of loreign importation that enter into
shipbuilding are of course high. What this adds to the
cost of cordage and meals must come out of the 4 ages
of shipcarpoutors ?nd shipowners, and cut of tho price
of ship timber. The first rush of the We torn crops now
becrins to reach us, and the great call ie for ship room,
not only to move the breadstuffs, birt cotton, provisions,
uaval stores, petroleum-in ah of which the- expert
movemont is reviving.
MONEY MARKET.
Thc Nev. "Torts Earning Fut, ot Friday. October nth,
says :
The loan market is easy. Thew is a good demand at 7
pee cent., but the supply is ample, and leuders can em?
ploy their balances without difficulty at full rates. The
discovery of Uae counterfeit seven-ihirttcs. tt was suppos?
ed, would have thc effect of disturbing tbe money market
to some oxteut. But no symptoms of trouble from this
came have as yet apj eared. Thc discount demand is

flow ot currency to the West ia small and diminishing
There is more inquiry from the Stock Exchange for time,
loans, for which the brokers are willing to pay high rate*.
Tho stock market is dull but linn. Governments are
unsettled, and little business is doing. The seven
thirties are finn at a slight advance from the lowest
prices of yesterday afternoon, when there waa 60ma
pressure- to sell in consequence of exaggerated rumors
relative to tho alleged .lorgeries. Ten-forties are a trac?

quite disappe.rcd. ' Tor the five-twenties there is little

lu introducing this new Power into the maiket, wi
would state that the following are some of the ad van
tages possessed by the "LITTLE GIANT" over all othei
Horse powers :
1. Its great strength on account of being double-geared
which not only doubles the strength by dividing thi
strain on twice the number of teeth, but by gearing ox
both Rides of the wheels it equalizes the wear on th?
shafts, and materially lessens the friction, enabling Un
horses to do much more work than with any othei
Power. .
li. Its compactness and extreme portability, lt weighing
about one-ball as much ss other Horse Powers, and occu
pyitlg but one-third the space, it can be packed in sinai
boxes, thus saving much expense. It is so simple tba
tho most ignorant person would have no difficulty ii
putting it together^
:?. The facility with which it can be adjusted to au}
kind of ms ch i ni. ry at any angle, either on the ground oi
over head, without moving it from its foundation, wil
be appreciated by farmers and planters as specially adapt

I have always recommended the Faber Polygrac
Lead Pencils as the only pencils fitted tor both orntmei
tal and mathematical, drawing; but, after a thoroug
trial of the American Polygrade Lead Pencils, mai
manured by the American Lead Pencil Company, Ne
York, I find them superior to any pencil In use, even I
the Faber or the old English .timberland Lead Penci
being a superior pencil tor sketching, ornameutal an
un chanical drawing, aud all the ordinary uses of a lea
pencil.
These pencils are very finely graded aud have a vei
smooth lead; even the sottest pencds bold the point wei
they are all that can he desired in a pencil. It gives a.
great pleasure to be able to assure Americans that the
