Would from hi i pieeence hide.
Ah I wo is me, the fatal morn.
When all was bright and fair,
I gave him too much tender corn,
And made him eat it there.
Ho used to poke hia little paw
Into a h tilo box.
And out of it a marble draw
Aa "cu ti tiing aa a fox."
He need to rook upon a log.
And gently switch bia bul.
Though, like hi? race, he lovai a trog.

MONET MARKET.
The New York Evening Post,-or Wedueeday, October
?tb, says :
Gold is shout one per cent lower to-day in conse?
quence of speculative movements. The tranaactlone are
not very heavy, and there is no spacial excitement la the
gold room.
The loss market ia rather more active; bot the supply
of available funds ls abundant, and the dram of currency
to the Weat la diminishing. The rate for call loans is 7
per cent on approved securities, and lenders are not co
urgent m discriminating in favor of governments and
against other collateral a. Tke discount demand la small,
choice hill? being ?carce and rating at 7 s SS- The
general movement of the market seems for the present
to tend towards greater oese, for the banks have made up
their quarterly statements, and public confidence ia
gradually reviving from the shock produced by the sud?
den locking np of the currency to the Sub-Treasury last
month. The issue of the certificates m exchange lor
compound notes has also som? influence m reato: lng
the tone of public foaling.
The stock market la more active. Governments are
dull, and without much inquiry. The speculation tn the
tea-forties appear? to have collapsed. Yesterdev they
?old st 101% ; to-day they are offered st iou s - The seven
thirties, tn the absence of Treasury purchase?, have raced

twenties are rather preesed for aale.

GENTLEMEN : 1 used, during the past season, one ol
?ingersoll's Portable Cotton Preases," purchased of you
laat September. I have always been prejudiced in tavot
of the "Screw Press," and nothing but dire necessity in?
duced me to try any other. I take pleasure, however, tn
adding my testimony in favor of its entire adaptation tc
the wants ot a cotton plantation. It has surpass?e, m}
most sanguine expectations. I have packed with but
two hands, yet I prefer four-two at each lever. Mj
bales all weighed over 600 lbs. The first lot I sent tc
markst averaged 662 lt* My impression la that 600 lbs
ls about the capacity of the Press, and a greater numbei
of pounds subject the foilow-block to too much risk, un
leas the aides of the cotton box waa increaaed. It woulc
add greatly to the value of the Presa if the cotton bo:
waa te inches longer. In haste. I am, very respectfully
Tour obedient servant, Ac, ? W. LAWTON.
P. S. I took my Press down am. carried lt some iou:
miles to pack the crop of a neighbor, who failed to havt
"Screw" built; he waa so mach pleaaed that he cai
determined to abandon the "Screw''and purchase "Ia

GENTLEMEN : I have Just received your letter ol Feb
mary 14th-upon^ my return to this place, after an ab
sence of two months-and thia reply may be too late io
your "Descriptive Circular of Ingersoll's Cotton Presa."
The Press I used iu packing wy cotton last yea
worked admirably, packing, wit ti ease from 600 ;o 62
lbs. With good active banda to work lt, I am satisfier
that from elghteeu to twenty bales might readily h
packed in a day.
This Preas combines the advantages of lightness, am
onsequent portability and simplicity (being easily man
aged h., any one or ordinary intelligence). Great com
pressing force, with little motive power, and "last, bu
uot least," it is worked entirely by band, thus saving to
the farm horses the hard labor imposed upou them b
the use of the ordinary "Screw."

MISCELLANEOUS.
PHILADELPHIA UNJ?VE11SITY
OF
MEDICINE AND fcUR?ERY.
rrVHE PRLLADELPHLA UNIVERSITY Of MEDICINE
A AND SURGERY was organized In 19*6. Chartered
by the Legislature, February 26.1863. Nae e changed
by a legislative enactment to the Eclectic A.<jdleal Col
loge, of Philadelphia, in 1860. In 1863 it purctaScd the
Pennsylvania Medical college, established in 1?45, and
the Philadelphia Medical College, which had previously
been merged into the Pennsylvania Medical College, ?u
1864 it purchased the Penn Medical University. Taft
Trustees of the separate schools united, petitioned and
obtained a special Act of the Lepia, ature, consolidating
these institutions and eba. ging their names to that of the
Philadelphia University of Mediriue and Surgery,
March 15,18T,r>. All these various Acts are pubH bed in
tbe statutes of Pennsylvania. The cost of the ) uUding
and museum was over one hundred thousand dollars, lt
will be observed that the University, as now organized, is
the legal representative of the four Medical Colleges that
it has absorbed. It is a liberal school of medicine, cou
fined to no dogma, nor attached lo any medical clique
but embraces in ita teaching everything of value to the
profession.
ScMioni.-It has two lull sessions each year, commenc?
ing on the 1st of October, and continuing until the 1st ot
January, as its first session, and from the' 1st ot January
to the 1st ol April, as its second; the two constituting one
tull course of lectures. It has al-o a summer sosslon,
commencing the 1st April aud continuing until August,
for the preparatory branches, lodi as Latin, Greek,
Mathematics, Botany, Zoology, Chemistry, Anatomy
Physiology, etc.
Jackett.-Tickets to the full course of lectures 3120. er
660 for each session. For the summer or preparatory
course $25. Graudating tee $30. To aid youu - men of
moderate means, the University has issued five hundred
scholarships, which are sold to first-course students for
$75. and to second-course students and clergymen for
$60, each constituting thc holder a life member, with the
perpetual privileges of the lectures, and all the teaching
or tho school. The only additional fees are a > early dis?
secting and matriculating ticket, each of which is $6.
The Advantages of Scholarsltipt.-The student holding a
scholarship can enter the College at any time during the
year, attend as long as he chooses, and re-enter the insti?
tution as fi equently as de-ired.
It requires no previous reading or study to enter the
University on scholarships, hence, all private tuition fees
are saved.
Students, by holding scholarships, an prosecute other
business a Fart of the time.
The candidate for graduation can present himself at
any time, aud receive his degree as soon as qualified.
in case a student should hold a scholarship and not be
able to attend lectures, it can be transferred to another,
thus preventing anv loss.
Parents, guardians or friends of students wishing to
purchase scholarship lor them a year or more bet?re
then- attendance at the University, can secure them by
advancing one-half the price and paving the balance
when tho student enters. Physicians and benevolent
men can bestow great benefit upon poor young men by
presenting them a scholarship, and thus enabling them
to obtain an honorable profession.
The Faculty embraces seventeen eminent physicians
and surgeons. The University has associated with ita
large hospital chine, whee every form of medical and
surgical disease is operated on aud treated in the pres?
ence of the class.
COLLEGE BULLDDIQ.-The College building, located m
Ninth street, south of Walnut, is the finest in the city.
Its front is collegiate gothic, and is adorned with em
battlements and embrasures, presenting a novel, bold,
and beautiful appearance. The facade ls of brownstone,
ornamented by two towers, rising to the elevation ot
eighty feet, and crowned with an embattled parapet.
The building contains between fifty and sixty rooms, all
supplied with water, gas, and every other convenience

I have aiwaya recommended the Faber Polvgrai
Lead PencUs as the only pencils fitted for both ornamej
tal and mathematical drawing; bur, after a tborouj
trial of the American Polygrade Lead Pencils, ma
ufaetnred by the American Lead Pened Cr.mpany, N"e
York. I find thpm superior to any pencil in use, even
rhe Faber or the old English Cumberland l*ad Peac
being a superior pencil lor sketching, ornamental at
mechanical drawing, and all the ordinary uses of a lei
pencil.
These pencils are very finely graded and have a ve
smooth lead : even the softest pencils hold tba point wei
they are all that rau be desired in a pencil, rt gives u
