Business of importance will be transacted. THE SOUTH CAROLINA Urnvnasmi.-The Uni? versity, says the Phoenix, opened on Monday, the 7th, under very favorable auapioeB. About seventy students matriculated, and others are coming in every day. All the old students have not yet returned. "THE CONFEDERATE DEAD." - The beautiful verses we printed yesterday in our "Poet's Corner, by Major O'HARA, a friend informs us, should have been headed "Kentucky's Dead." They were writ? ten on the occasion of the removal of the remains of the Kentucky Volunteers, who fell at the battle of Buena Vista in the war with Mexico. OUR unahaven friends, and those who do not agree with the wise man ? in thinking gray hair honorable, should visit the Tonsorial establish? ment of Signor JAMES LOMBARDO, No. 114 Market street, where they will find a first class fnaeur, who understands his art thoroughly, and will fix their heads and frontispiece in the latest Paris style. THE NEW JURIES.-By clint of active exertion, says the Columbia Chronicle, the Clerk and Sheriff of the Court of Common Pleas, have succeeded, through the courtesy of the Chairman of the Board of Registration, in completing the new Jury lists, and industrious constables are busy in serv? ing invitations on the elected, with the prospect of having the requisite number of jurors sum? moned by Thursday morning. Three colored men are among the happy number. ST. PETER'S CHURCH COLUMBIA.-The Phoenix of yesterday says : Among the many improve? ments going on in our city, we must not omit to mention that now being effected in the house of worship of pur CathoUp fellow citizens. The ex? terior is being renewed in appearance, by a coat in imitation of dark-brown sand-stone ; the inte? rior has been thoroughly repaired, and the tower? ing cross and the gilt inscriptions renewed by re gliding and rebronzing. This structure was founded in 1824, and since then the increase ot the congregation necessita? ted its room extension. It escaped destruction on the memorablo night of the 17th February, 1866, by becoming the refuge of the Sisters of Mercy, who had retired there after the destruction of their own Institution, on Main street-to which may be added the noble conduct of some Federal soldiers, who kept guard, we understand, at the main entrance. The present improvements are being curried on under the supervision of Mr. JAMES A. DEARMAN, contractor. The present pastor, the Rev. Dr. J. O'CONNELL, has labored for many years in this church, and with complete success. The congre? gation is large and increasing. THE FUNERAL OF HENRY TIMHOD.-From the Chronicle of yesterday, we have the following ac? count of tho obsequies of Mr. Trianon : "This sad event took place yesterday afternoon, at the Trin? ity Church, and called together a large number of the friends and relatives of the lamented poet. The services were performed by Rev. C. BRUCE WALKER, Rev. Mi*. SKA ND being also present, but unable to participate in them by reason of an in? disposition, which for several days has confined him at home. SIMMONS. "The coffin lid has closed, the grave is filled, and the pale face of HENRY TIMHOD 'is shut out forever from the gaze, of those who loved him well. He sleeps the sleep that knows no waking, in that narrow mansion, using his own beautiful language : "Where gloom and gladness-grave and gardon-mixed, Make lt a place to love and not to fear.*' "BeavenI shed thy most propitious dews around! Afld a whisper, 'He io gone I' " "DWELL IN THE LAND, AND VERILT THOU SHALT BB BED."-About two months ago we saw several gentlemen from t he Northeastern part of this State in this city, en route for Texas, whither they were going to spy ont the fatness .of the land. Wo en? deavored to show them the impolicy of auch a step, and exhausted the entire stock of argument against ?migration. In vain. For every reason we advanced in favor of staying our friends could show two why they ought to go. They went; all of them, however, returned, and yesterday we had the pleasure of seeing one or them again on his way home from the' distant West, entirely, radically cured of the Torus ' fever. They had many inducements to remain, purchase land and sett lo, but weighing tho odds of moving, transplanting old tress, going into a hotter and an insalubrious climate, and voluntari? ly depriving themselves of all tho comforts ?nd privileges cf civilized nwiety, schools, churches, friands, neighbors, kinsfolk, etc., etc_against tho advantages of good land and brisk business; weighing also negro supremacy and greenbacks here, against gold and a large white .majority there-tbe balance still largely preponderated in favor of old South Carolina. The accounts they give of the country are not very encouraging. The cotton crop in ia the best they saw anywhere in their route. Aa -they went further Weet they found increased traces of the ravages of the army and boll worm. In some sections these plagues have ei? nl?st destroyed the entire orop, in others about half a orop will be made. In Texas they report considerable activity in business, notwithstanding the great boat: and tho malarious fevers of d?Yorent typefl every ?h?* prevalent. TAXES.-The recent issue of the General Order from military headquarters suspending the collec? tion of certain taxes, seems to hare suspended the collection of all, and greenbacks in the State Trea? sury are as scarce as hen's teeth. With upwards of $180,000 due the State by the taxpayers, much of which is in the hands ofJhe Sheriffs, it is peculiar? ly unfortunate that this order should have been issued without speoiflo instructions ss to the man? ner of its opeiation and the scope of application.
