THE! CON PEDERA TB DBA O.
BT COX,. THEODOBE O'HARA.
[The following Unes are unsurpassed by anything of I
their kind in the English language. Tbsy are touching,
beautiful, oloquont and grand. One of the stanzas now
adorns a monument lu a Boston cemetery-yes, even In
cult Walo , conceited Boston, where they boast of their
LongfaUowft, and Holmes', and look with contempt upon
aU American literature that does not have Its birth ba
Mossochusetts. The author, a gallant soldier poet of tho
C. 8. A., ls now dead. He was on Gen. Breckinridge's
staff.)
The muffled drum's sad roll has beat
The noldlor'a lsst tattoo ;
No more on life's parade shill moat
The brave and daring few ;
On Fame's eternal camping ground
Their ??lout tents are lipread.
And glory guardB with solemn rouud,
Tho bivouac of the dead.
No answer to Uie foe's ad vaneo
Now swelln upon the wind :
No troubled thought at midnight haunt*
Of loved one left behind ;
No vision of the morrow's.strlfo
Tho warrior's dream alarms
, No braying i ora nor soreaming fife
At dawn sbaU cay to arms.
Their shivered swords ore red with rust,
Their plumed heads are bowod,
Their haughty banner, trailed In dust,
Is now their martial shroud ;
And plenteous funeral tears have washed
Their red stain, from each crow,
And their proud forms in battle guahed,
Arc free from anguish row.
The neighing steed, the flashing blsde.
Tho trumpet's stirring bloat,
The charge, tho dreadful cannonade,
The din and shout are past:
Not war's wild note, nor glory's peal.
Shall fill with fluror delight,
Those breasts that novar more shall feel
The rspturo of the fight.
Like the dread northern hurricane
That sweeps his broad plateau.
Flushed with the triumph yet to gain.
Comedown the serried foe ;
Our heroes felt the shock and leapt
. To meet them on the plain ;
And long the pitying sky hath wept
Above our ga.loot slain.
Sons of the consecrated ground.
Ye must not slumber therte.
Where stranaecjiteps and tongues resound
Along the enoussa air;
Your own proud land's heroic soil
Shall be your fluter grove ;
She claim a from war bia richest spoil.
The ashes of her brave.
So 'neath their parent's turf they rest,
Far from the gory field;
Borne to a Spartan mother's breast.
On many a bloody shield -,
Tho sunshine of their naUvo sky
Smiles sadly on them here,
And kindred hearts and eyes watch by
The hero's sepulchre.
' Rest on embalmed and sainted dead 1
Dcor os the bloody brave;
No Impious footsteps hero sholl tread
The herbage of your grave ;
Nor ahaU your glory be forgot
While tome her record keeps,
Or honor points the hallowed spot
Where valor proudly sleeps.
Yon marble minstrel's voiceless tons
In dootfrloss song ahaU tell,
When many a vanqulabed aga hath flown,
The story how rou MU ?.,
Nor wreck, nor change, oar winter's blight,
No tune's remorseless doom.
Shall dim ono roy of holy Ught
That gilds your glorious tomb.
