Heavy garmonts begin to take the place of Summer suits, and the call for wood and coal ringa out in all quarters ot our city. Cotton is likely to suffer -from his icy grasp, while influenzas and chills remind us of our mortality. MAYOR'S COURT.-Tho only cases brought be? fore hiB Honor were three delinquents who .were charged with violating the laws of God and man by keeping their stores open on the Sabbath. GEORGE 8. PELZEK, M. D-, City Registrar. Ta? DA? OF ATONEMENT.-YOM KIPPUB. " Yesterday evening commenced this the most solemn of ail the Jewish festivals. It is at once a festival and a fast. The 9th day of Tishri (the eve of Tom Kippar), is not kept as a fast, as the other penitential days are h> many strict Jews. On the contrary, it is er joined not to abstain on it from the usual comforts of life. As soon as the afternoon meal is J ver, and grace said, nobody is permitted to take an/ further nourishment, or to indulge in any cf thost comforts exciting pleas? urable sensations; for this is the interpretation given to tho command, "Ye shall afflict your souls' (Lev. xvi. 81); every one now hastens to the syna? gogue, the interior of which presents a solemn and imposing aspect. There the worshippers stand in awe and reverence, wrapt in silent medi? tation-their feet, according to Eastern fashion, without the usual covering of boots or shoes, but protected by felt-slippers-enveloped in their scarfs; the married men dressed in snow-white flowing robes, and oaps to correspond, whilst nu? merous, wax-candles shed a flickering light throughout the building. These are as many in number as there are heads of families, each pend? ing one candle to the synagogue. At last the sig? nal for prayer is given by the rabbi, and the min? ister begins to chant in a low, s creely audible tone a formula, which is repeated three times, during which the plaintive, tremulous, heart-stir? ring tnne gradually rises to a higher pitch, a? as to be distinctly heard over the wholo building. The service lasts to a late hour in the evening. Many of the worshippers, however, do not leave the sy? nagogue at all, but spend there the whole night in prayer, meditation, and study the Law. The morning service begins at daybreak, and extends over the day, during which time many of the reli? gions do not leave their seats for one moment, and some stand the whole time. The prayers are divided, according to the sacrifices brought to the temple, into the morning, additional, and after? noon service, to whioh, towards the evening, another, termed Neilah (closing), ia added. This portion of the service is remarkable for the ardor With whioh the faithful pour forth theso conclud? ing prayers before the throne of meroy. It seems that at the reflection that t ho gatos of heaven, through which the prayers ascend, are now being eloaed, the flame of devotion breaks forth with re? newed vigor. Vanished has every trace of lan? guor and faintness cons?quent upon fasting ond confinement to a crowded place, the air of whioh is tainted hy the exhalations ot so many indivi? duals, and the burning of so many candios; and at the recital of that portion of the servieo where the milty of God te acknowledged, tho edifice re- , .choc- with tho thrUling burst of hundreds of | voices proclaiming ?the Lord, ho is God,' repeated .even Mmes and bearing, m their deep erndon, ?he stamp Uiat they proceed from souls powerfully impressed with the presence o, the Supreme Bo? ing, and emailing beneath the reflsotlQn that but for hie meroy there would be no hop? for them \ Night atlast having brought the serviceto a otoo*, th? worshippers hasten home to break their fast, after which friendly visit? ar? paid, and mti tnaJinauirle?exchanged respecting each other's' health *St*r the trials of th? day. The bill to regulate the dredging of docks was engrossed in due form, and its title changed to an ordinance. ATTEMPTED SUICIDE.-On Monthly night, PETER WOOD, a white man residing at No.. 12 Tradd street, while laboring under a temporary fit of in? sanity, endeavored to ont his throat with a razor. Fortunately for his future welfare, the cut was not mortal, though it will incommode him for some time. Dr. JOSEPH A. YATES was sent for, and under his care the would-be suicide will probably recover. PORT ROYAL RAILROAD.-The meeting of stook hol?ors of this road, says tho Augusta Constitu? tionalist of yesterday, took place at the Planters Hotel, yesterday, in this city. Wo are pleased tc learn that there is every proapect of au early com? pletion of this road. , Northern capitalists have in? vested, and it is advisable that stockholders in the South, who arc able, should retain their shares. Thia Road may do for Augusta what other linee have failed to do to the extent that was reasonably expected. -o FOR BALTIMORE.-Since tho war Baltimore ha. become ono of tho first commercial cities on th? Atlantic coast, and in some respects a oompolitoi with New York for the Southern trade. Tin Steamship Lino from this port to that city offen inducements to merchant s and shippers that cat hardly be equalled. Cotton is taken through t< Philadelphia via Baltimore, and insurance ii effected at tho low rate of one per cont. Tho Fal con, of thia line, commanded by Captain E. C REID, will leave on Saturday, the lath inst., at < P. M. Shippers and others interested are direct ed to the advertisement of Messrs. COURTENAY ? TRENHOLM. The weather was fine, and a larg crowd of spectators assembled to witness th game. The game waa well contested until th sixth innings, which waa prolonged by bad play ing, until darkness compelled the umpire to ca the game. The only misfortune which happene to mar the pleasure of the eveuing was a COIHB?O between the pitcher and catcher, who were bot running for a fly bali. Both parties wero stunne and the catcher seriously* wounded, but at the lat report, we aro happy to state, he was doing wei With this exception, the game passed off pleasan ly. We await the announcement of, the thu game, which will decide the contest. COTTON SOB BALTIMORE AND PHILADELPHIA. The Augusta Constitutionalist of yesterday says The Baltimore and Charleston Steamship Cot pony's flue steamers Sea Gull and Falcon hara, 1 their speed and successful weekly trips - be twa? tha two ports, secured from underwriters a low rate of insurance on cotton than has boan paid < coasting steamers for two years past. The rat? c cotton to Baltimore from Charleston is j ai through to Philadelphia 1 per cent. This last arrangement will bo a groat conv nience to shippers, as the Baltimore steamers ta Philadelphia cotton with dispatch, and freigh "through" as well as insurance are ob low figure Messrs. COURTENAY dc TRENHOLM, Charleston, Messrs. MORDECAI & Co., Baltimore, will 'give necessary information to shippers. "THE CRY IS .STILL THEY COME."-We mei only bales of cotton, which crowd our railrot depots, block up the wharves, and put ehippii clerks and other people in that line to aoti efforts. Last year the South Carolina Railroi rarely reached eight hundred bales per day ; noi even at this early period of the. cotton year, th Company reports one thousand and over, tl Northeastern Railroad two hundred and over, ai these figures will grow daily until, as we oo ll Jen tl y believe, two thousand bales and over w be a common report every morning. Chariest* must look to her sea facilities, for the markets the world must have our great staple prompt! At noon yesterday, so we are informed, there we over fifty car loads of cotton en route to Chariest on the South Carolina Railroad alone. OPINIONS O IO THE! PEOPLE I ALLENDALE, BARNWELL DISTRICT, S. C., ? March 1, 1807. i NeMrs. Little d- Mar/hall : GENTLEMEN : I used, during the past season, ono ot Ingersoll's Portable Cottou Presses," purchased of you last September. I have always been prejudiced in favor of the "Screw Press," and nothing bnt dire necessity in* doced mo to try any other. I take pleasure, however, In adding my testimony in favor of its entire adaptation to the ' wonts ol a cottou plantation. It has surpassed my most sanguine expectatlc -i. I have packed with ont two hands, yet I prefer four-two. at each lever. My bales all weighed over (SOO lbs. The first lot I sent to thsrket averaged 602 H.s. My impression ls that SOO lbs. lssbont the capacity of the Press, and a greater number of pounds subject the fodow -1 dock to too much risk, un? less the sides of the cotton box was Increased. It would add greatly to the value of the Press it the cotton box wss ten Inches longer. In haste, I sm, very respectfully. Your obedient servant, Ac. B. W. LAWTON. P. S. I took my Press down and carried it some four miles to pack the crop of a neighbor, who failed to have a "Screw" built; he was so much pleased that hs bas determined to abandon the "Screw" and purchase "In* gersoll's Press." B. W, Ii. OFF-TOE OE KINO'S MOUNTAIN RAILROAD OOM?*NY, I YORKVILLE, S. C., April ir., 18?7. ( GENTLEMEN : I have just received your letter of Feb? ruary 14th-upon my return to this place, alter an ab? sence ol' two mouths-and this reply may be too late for your "Descriptive Circular of Ingersoll's Cotton Press." The Press I used In parking my cotton last year worked admirably, packing, with ease from 600 to 636 Ibe. With good active hands to work lt, I am satisfied that from eighteen to twenty balee might readily be packed in a day. ThtsTrcio combines tho advantages of lightness, and consequent portability and simplicity (heirn/ easily man - aged b> any one of ordinary intelligence). Great com? pressing force, with little mottve, power, and "last, bnt not least," it ls worked entirely by hand, thus naviug for the farm horses the hard labor imposed upon them by the use of the ordinary "Screw." , ?
