MONDAY MORNING, OCTOBER 7, 1867.
AUTUMN.
Welcome, ye brae*. In dying ver?ur? slsd,
Weeping your croidon tears on aU bolow ;
Hall, lovely Autumn days, whose aspect sad
Delights my sight and ?oltens aU my woe 1
With thoughtful stop, in lonoly woodland.path,
I love to mark tho yoar'a rotreaUng lorm
When, sombre as the mornfui s odes of death.
The sun'* veiled rays scarce tell the opproaeh of morn.
Yea, in those Autumn days, when nature dies,
Her glory gone, aU boauteoua things I see.
Tho farewell of a friend, the last low sighs
That w.ift f.om dying Ups tho laat sweet smile to me.
So ready from the shore of life to spring.
Weeping for Sommer days of hope long past,
I still look back with envy's poignant sting ,
And view departed Joys which yet no Joys possossod.
Earth, BUU, valen, na'ure, beaut if ol and fair
Vor you. on death's dark verge, a tear I'll shed ;
So lovely ia tho light, so pure the air,
That naines and breathes around the dying head.
Yet to the dregs this cup of Ufo TU drain.
This mlnglod cup of nectar and of gall;
SUll In Us depths all hldde may romain
One drop of Ufo to compensate for all.
Perchance aU shrouded in futurity,
Some bliss, by h ipe unseen, I may descry ;
Perchance soma sister soul my soul may see,
To read my spirit with a kindred eye.
The flower resigns its perfume to the gale,
Breathing ita final sweetnesses ero it die;
My soul exhale* In sorrow, like the waU
Of some low strain of mournful melody.

Cotton picking ia now in full blast, and the
busiest hours of the farmer are at band. Tho
prospect for an average yield is quite promising.
Our farmers would consult .their interest to gin,
bale and ship to market as Boon as possible It is
poor policy to holdback for a higher price; for
while the ohanoes aro against you your capital is
also lying idle, and you aro losing the interest upon
it; besides, there are bjt few who have not bor?
rowed capital during the present year at heavy in?
terest, and t jose obligations should be discharged
aa Boon aa possible.-Lancaster Ledger.
MURDER IN ST. MATTHEW'S PARISH.-Simon
farrow (colored) was murdered on Monday last,
en the plantation of Major Tbos. B. Whaley, Bt.
Matthew's, by Moses Livingston (also colored.)
9Dhe cause was said to be jealousy, and the mur?
der has been characterized to us as most heinous,
the victim's head having been fractured with au
iron bar, and his throat cut. In the absence,
however, of reliable particulars, we forbear say
mg more at present. The murderer was brought
Into town on Thursday afternoon by three freed?
men acting as constables, and has been lodged in
jail here to wait a triol.-Orangcbura Nevo*.
LAWLESSNESS or SOLDIERS.- On Saturday night
Mr. Lawrence Wolfe, of this place, waa called to
the door of his atore by a rapping there, and upon
going out was assaulted and struck over tho head
with a sling shot or bay .net by one of the soldiers
of the garrison stationed here. Several other sol?
diers were present and implicated in the affair.
Captain French, we are pleased to record, ofter
diligent inquiry baa discovered and arrested the
guilty parties, and they are now in close confine?
ment awaiting their trial.
Mr. Wolfe was at first thought to be seriously
injured, but he ia now up and doing well.-ibid.
PxoxPocKBTfl.-A freedman named Thaddeus
waa relieved of a watch, at tho cirons, on Thurs?
day night. Thaddeus states that one of the cir?
cus men asked him what o'clook it waa, and at the
same time handed him a fancy box to inspect, and,
when his attention was diverted, made off with
the time-keeper. The loss was immediately made
known to Chief of Police Radcliffe, who worked
up the case so successfully that bi a short time
the stolen property was returned to its rightful
owner.- Columbia Phosnix.
HOME PRODUCTIONS.-We have received from'H.
H. GeigT, Esq., who has a planting interest on
tho Cong are e river, a bale of most exoeUent prov?
ender, put up iu compact form, and generally

Davie, J, a. Guignard, Esq., and other gentlemen
have used this food for stock for a length of time
and express the opinion that it is preferable to
foddoi, in addition to being much cheaper; in fact
etook prefer it to tho former. Mg. Geiger has
prepared a large quantity of this article, and will
furnish it at such rates as will make it an induce?
ment to persons owning stook to givo it a trial at
least. The dover can bj soon at the P/uentx office.

I have always recommended the faber Polygrade
Lead Pencils as the only pencils fitted for both ornamen?
tal and mathematical drawing; but, ofter a thorough
trial of the American Polygrodo Lead Pencil?, man?
ufactured by the American Lead Pencil Company, Now
York, I find thom superior to any pencil in use, even.to
the Faber or the old English Cumberland Load - Pencil,
being o superior pencil for sketching, ornamental and
mechanical drawing, and all the ordinary uses of a lead
pencil. '
These pencils aro very finoly graded and have a very
smooth load; even the sottest pencils hold the point well;
they oro all that can be ?Icsirod In a pencil, ft gives me
great pleasure to bo able to assure Americans that they
trill no longer be compelled to depend upon Germany or
