LECTURE TO-MORROW (SUNDAY) EVKNINO.-At
the request of a number of clergymen and laymen
who cannot attend at other times. Prof. HOLMES
will on Sunday evening repeat tho last of the two
lectures on the "Mosaic Record of Creation, and
the Antiquity of Man," lately delivered before the
Young Men's Christian Association. As the Col?
lege Chapel cannot accommodate a large audience,
the Vestry of tho Unitarian Church, Archdale
street, have kindly tendered its use for that eve?
ning. The usual evening Church services will be
conducted by the officiating minister, commencing
at harf-paa* 7 o'clock. The public are invited to
attend.
-o
ANOTHER ACCIDENT. -We are pained to record
the sudden demise of a* small black dog with ;
curly tail, who came to bia untimely end by vio?
lence. The uurortunate animal was slumbering
ou the railroad track in Calhoun street when the
ear approached swiftly and-poor dog Tray was
no more. His? remains were carefully placed ju
the gutter, there to abide until the scavenger re?
moves him to his last resting place. Who he was,
and where he ?tm? from, is not known, his past
history is a blank, but sqme one will whistle in vain,
there will be no responso, the tail that was wont
to wag responsive to a call ia now incapable of that
emotion, and the little black dog is a thing of tho
past.
THE NEW CUSTOM HOUSE.-?Q?he workmen aro
still busily engaged on this building, but their
labors are confined principally to tho inferior, and
an ominous sign of "Positively no Admittance'1
keeps the curions at a respectful distance. Collec?
tor MACKEY ia determined that Charleston shall
have a Custom House that will roiJect sjuie credit
on the Government, and is using the appropria?
tion obtained from Congress in completing-the
structure. The work ts ?fbne nuder his super?
vision, and though it is confined for tho present to
the interior of thc building, a new appropriation ls
expected when Congress meets thia winter, and
the ornamental work of tho exterior will ho re?
sumed. The steam engine belonging to the Uni?
ted States Arsenal waa employed yesterday in
pumping the water from the cedars under the
building.
THE STREET RAILWAY-CHAN*GE OF SCHEDULE.
The public are requested to notice the change
that will take place on Monday, the 7th inst., in
the schedule of the Street Railway. It .viii be seeu
that on the last trip the cars will leave tho lower
terminus at 9$ P. M. This change, while it will
benefit the public, will be no less acceptable to
the employees of the road.' Few persons remain
at business during the season to that late hom*,
and the pleasure passengers are lew and far be?
tween. The short dava and long evenings of win?
ter are fast approaching, and the streets will be
comparatively deserted by all but a far stragglers.
In former years the curfew's solcmu knelt an?
nounced .he close of day, and the hour when good
and honest citizens, should seek their homes. Its
sound is no longer heard, but the tinkle ol' the
car bells haa taken ita place, and will serve to
wara the belated citizen of the flight ol' time.
ADVERTISING rs THE STREET CARS. -Some months
since the Company notified the public that they
would allow them the privilege of using tho panels
of the cars for their business advertisements.
For a long time no offers were made, but the op?
portunity to display an advertisement, so that all
who mn may read, was too tempting to be ne?
glected, and some of the' panels have been taken
by prominent busineaa houses. Messrs. STOLE
WEBB ?fc Co., and J. R. READ & Co., ol Xing street
fame, have a centre panel in each car; while on
the opposite side, the wheelbarrow of Mr. ilia vu
HARRIS is trundling along, announcing that job
printing and book binding can be done at his es
tabliahmeut. While this system ot advertising
destroys thc picturesque appearance of the car?,
it cannot fail to attract attention, and will in ali
probability become exceedingly popular among
the merchauts.
MAYOR'S COURT.-It i-as been said that a ro?e by
any other name would smell aa sweet, but the Roso
in question was so perfumed with bad whiskey
that every ono kept to tho windward. Rose con?
sidered this 'he cut direct and ?esented it by show?
ing her thorns; in a word, Rose was drunken Rose,
and very disorderly withal. She was taken to the
place where the bad people go aud allowed to sleep
off her spree quietly. On being told of her mis?
demeanor, she apologized, but his Honor refused
to accept it unless it waa wrapped UD in a green?
back.
Some gay larks, who were ou a breeze, got three
sheets in the wind and were blown by a force of
circumstances to the House, of Refuge, where they
were Mildly taken in, but found some difficulty in
getting out, until the* deposited the greenbacks,
when "open sesame" was pronounced and they
were iutroduced to the outer world.
Rus IN UBRE.-Daring the present week several
drummers, fresh from the rural parts, have been
ongaged by the large wholosalo stores on Fayao
and Meeting streets. These gentlemen tiavo been
assiduous in endeavoring to secure trade and have
mado tho acquaintance of tho country merchants
and represented the superior advantages of their
several establishments in glowing terms. Unfor?
tunately their eagerness lcd them astray, and one
of the verdant ones whoso ignorance was refresh?
ing gravely introduced himself to a prominent dry
goods merchant of this city and invited him to in?
spect his stock. Tho amused looks ol' Iiis noighbors
soon convinced him that he had put his foot in it,
and ho withdrew the invitation he had so cordially
extended a few minutes previous. A short acqnaint
Ence with the city will serve to rub" off the rust,
but we guaraneo that the drummer in question
will be more wide awake iu future.

FALL AND WINTER CLOTHINU. -The large cloth?
ing cstabliauineut of Mr. WM. MATTH IESSEN, at
No. 219 King street, ono door below Market street,
has been thoroughly refitted daring the summer.
A coat ol'paint improved the external appearance,
while the iuterior of the store has been stocked
with even* variety of clothiug, besides the various
styles of cloths which aro cut and made into gar?
ments by workineu employed in tho establishment.
Captain B. \V. MOTUREOUS, the superintendent,
bas a long exporieuco in this business, and his
numerous friends will find him prepared to give
them a completo outfit. The stock has been se?
lected with great care, and comprises every variety
of clothing, from plantation goods to the finest
qualities known to the trade. Each article has
tho price affixed, and no doviation is made, as tho
goods aro sold at the lowest market rates. The
stoek of boys' and youths' clotbiug ia quito full,
and comprisos every grade. lu addition to the
clothing department, a large tailoring establish?
ment is conueoted with the store, and gonds are
cut and made to order by experienced workmen.
Mr. MATTHIESSEN has fitted up his store with great
taste, and is prepared to ofter inducements to the
public that will soon mako them permanent cus?
tomers. A referenoo to the advertisement in
another column will convince the credulous, and a
visit to No. 219 will soon convert them ani chungo
the appearance of their outer man.

A Dangerous Season.
An almost unparalleled quantity of rain him fallen
during the Summer, Vegetation has been wonderfully
thick and rank, and, as it decays, au unusual amount of
sickness may be expected unless proper in eau s are
taken to prevent it.
Fever and ague and billions remittents already pre?
vail to an alarming extent, and as the Fall advances and
the malarious night fogs become heavier, the sick list is
likely to mercase both bi the city and the country. It is,
therefore, only an act of common prudence to keep the
vital forces in full vigor, so that they may reBiet thc un?
healthy influences of the season. Reinforced by tho
tonic operation of HOSTETTER'S STOMACH BITTERS,
tho system, however weak and susceptible, naturally
wlD, in nine cases ont Df ten, successfully combat every
species G; atmospheric poison by which epidemics ure
produced.
During-tiio months of September. October and No?
vember the difference in temperrture between day and
night is very great, and the chilling dov, ?> and mists of
the season arv the prolific causes of indigestion, cliolera
morbus.diarrhae and dyseut. ry. Bearing this in mind,
reniumber, also, tbat the BITTERS not only Invigorate
the stomach and brace the nerves, but act specifically
upou the bowels and tho liver, imparting to those im?
portant orgaus regularity and tone. It is not reasonable
ti expect immunity from prevalent complaints it no
precautions are taken to escape them.
HOS TETTER'S RUTERS aro at once pleasant to the
