Great care is taken to secure a proper .lope, and when completed, ibis section of Bread street will be an ornament to the city. Along Meeting street the wheebaof the cars have worn ruts on either aide of the rails, which in the rainy season are a nuisauce to passengers. This will be obviated in Broad street, and the cays saved the splashing that was uuavoidablo bet?re the recon? struction. From the vig'>r with which tho work is now progressing, it will uot be long before tho, denizens of Broad street will rejoice iu the pos? session of a good pavement, and be si 1? to take the cars from their doors. PROVOST COURT IN SUMTER AND CLAREMOS. The Clarendon Pr?t? of Thursday last, in a two column leader, animadverts uiwn "Provost Courts and their powers." It complains, and with good reason, that the military authorities, after a dis? continuance, during nearly eighteen months, of this irregular system of judicature, should deem it necessary to re-introduce it, when all the Coul ta of the land are open to even* citizen, irrespjetive of color, and not a Bingle good rcasou can be given for again resorting to this, in a great measure, ar? bitrary and irresponsible kind of tribunal. It con? cludes by saying: We behove the course about to be inaugurated foll of evil to the people of otu- District: aud that while it will remedy no evil and seenre no useful result, it is a useless departure from that constitu? tional course of government to which our military rulers should endeavor aa far as possible to con? form in all their orders and actions. We trust that a reconsideration of the whole matter will result in the revocation of an order which moat injuriously affects the very class whose interests it was perhaps designed to protect and which will entail an onerous expense upon all who are summoned from this District to attend as wit? nesses at trials conducted in another District. f"*?frvB SCORE AMIY^MW:-We"" mentlbnetF briefly ; in xeflerdayV issue, Hie dcntjjr of "MrsT Mini ABKOLD, of this btal". So far* as my. observa-^ tions extend, the eora crop> appears to bo poor. There was not ranch ! planted, as .compared "with the crop before the war, and the cultivation has been slovenly. The cotton crop is undoubtedly better in tbeJPeo [ Dee c?ajjtry than it was ttet&ear, but it will not turn ont what it promised some weett ago. There has been too much rain for cottontail through the season, and the .rust is now basting the plant r rapidly, This crop will stand bad treatment and disasters better than any other grown at the South, but this year ven-late plantiug,-Beaty raina dur? ing the entire season, and very imper?set culture wi&midoubtedty cut, this produ^ftin-down muoh ? below general expectation. OCTOBER.-This month wjs designated in the old Alban or Latin calendars ks Wy? monelh or tho wine month; it was also styled Winter-fyWUi, on account of the approach of win ter. A melancholy feeling has been aaeooiated with October from the general decay of nature by whiofa it is characterized, and many of the most beautiful poetical imag?e have been drawn from the fallen leaves and the golden hues of autumn This month ia.generally considered the dividing Une between summer and autumn. It is marked with a rich hectic red, while every wind that blows scatters its beauties on the ground. The woods never leek more efearniing than during October, for 1t seems as if Nature had then exhausted her choicest colors on the milage. In the old Saxon almanacs this month: was allegorized by the figure j of a husbandman carrying a sack on hirahoul ; ders and sowing com, ni allusion to tho practice of sowing the winter grains which occurs at this season. On the 23d of the month the sun enters the sign of scorpio, au astronomical emblem said to typify, in tho form of a destructive insect, fte increasing power of cold over nature. - Notwith? standing this interpretation, there occurs in this month some ofithe finest aud most exhilarating weather during the whole year, the middle of the day being often enlivened by all the-innsbine of Joly, without its oppressiveness, and all the channa of a frosty day in December, without the piercing cold. -o MATOB'S COUBT.-A rash believer in his eapacity of euduranco endeavored to drown dull caro br flooding himself with bad whiskey. His eflorts were in one respect successful, for ho soon arrived at the happy atato when man becomea-monarch of all he surveys, and meandered toward the battery in order to obtain a good look at his island plan? tations. On tho route ho stopped to collect his thoughts, bot tho ink was arduous, and his weary body found reposo on the sida walk. His sleep was nut balmy, though his breath was perfumed, for he was rudely interrupted, and he woke in the morning to And it was but a dream, with the sad consolation of knowing that the city waa $5 richor at his expense. A compatriot, moved by similar impulses, took several doses of raw rye, which produced au obliquity of vision, and caused bim to imagine the pavement a feather bed. He laid him gently down to sleep, but bis slumbers were brief, aud a re? moval to a less airy habitation convinced bim that bia old friend. Joba Barleycorn, li ad tooled hint. He was requested to tarnish the court with the stamps, and left thinking that if the city mado money in that way it was equal to the infernal revenue? A lover of the weed strayed through the market during the morning hours with a lighted segar, thinking the smoke would keep the dies from the meat, and having a mind superior to city ordi? nances. He was shown the error of his ways, and requested \ furnish the city with the price nf his misdemeanor. Diana, a dusky maid, was poseessod with the idea that she must obtain some dry goods before tho prioe was raised. The demand was urgent, and Diana not particular as to the ways and means. She was poor and needy, and took the money]from those who had it and purchased her rags. Unfor? tunately for Di. the theft was discovered, and she was placed in durance vile until a magistrate could discuss her situation. a. n.
