DEDICATION OF A JEWISH SYNAGOGUE IN SAVAN?
NAH.-The new synagogue ou the" corner of State
and Montgomory streets. Savannah, we learn from
the Advertiser, was dedicated on Friday evening.
Rev. Mr. LEWIN delivered a sermon, and addresses
were made by Messrs. SJMON GEBSTSIAN and S. E.
BYCK. The congregation that is to worship in it is
known nuder tho style of "B'uai B'rith Jacob."
BISHOP LYNCH.-In the Paris correspondence of
the Courrier des Etuis Urns, September 21, we find
the following paragraph:
"Dr. SPENCE? has organized a prayer meeting
(une association de pri?res) for the conversion of
Great Britain. Bishop LYNCH, of Charleston, pro?
poses an association ol' prayer for the conver?
sion of the United Stites."
DEATH OF A CENTENARUN.-Mrs. MARY ABNOD.
probably the oldest woman in the United States
died at her residence in Douglas street, Brooklyn
on the 25th instant, at the advanced age of 110
years. Mrs. ABNOD was b?ni in Charleston, S. C.
in 1758, and moved to Long Island in 179-1, where
she dwelt until her death. She waa tho mother of
eight children, five of whom are still living,
tfie eldest bekng-70 aud the youugest 55 years ol
age. .

tion is at issue in Washington, we think it as well
to wait for authentic particulars.
LITTER M. v THEFT. -For some time complainte
have been received that the NEWS was not deliver?
ed; but upon investigation it was found that they
were stolen from tho doors by some unprincipled
boys who followed the carrier. These thefts have
been quite frequent, but could be easily prevented
by the vigilance of the police. The carriers and
oewsljoj'S are well known, and if ?Il'irresponsible
parties who were seen with papers were stopped,
the practice of stealing from under the street doors
would aoon cease.
THE COTTON CROP. - -A large factorage house ra
this city has favored us with the following extracta
from several of .their moat reliable correspondents
in reference to the crop. The following is from an
influential planter in Alachua county, Florida, dat?
ed 18th September, 1867 :
"The rainy season is finally over; the cotton
that opens now will be better than the first. ITonv
da has made a worse failure than in twenty y earp.
Some of the planters put the crop at one-fourth,
the nighest estimate is one-third.
Extract from a letter received frorn a leading
firm in New Orleans, dated 20th September, 1867 :
"Our accounts from the intenor have latterly
been quite discouraging, the worm having reap?
peared in great numbers, and the destruction is
immense.
The weather, too, Bay for ten days past, has been
very rainy, and packing progresses slowly. Re?
ceipta of the new crop here unusually light for the
season."

menced yesterday evening, and will continue for
two days., i. e, until the stars make their appear?
ance to-morrow evening.
The Hebrew year consisted of twelve unequal
months, which, previously to the exile, were
lunar. The twelve solar months made up only
three fifty-four days, constituting a year, too short
by eleven days. To remedy this, a month waa in?
tercalated everj' two or every threo years. This
supplementary month was added at the termina?
tion o? the sacred yetar* the twelfth month being
Adar, the thirteenth waa called Veadar or Adar
the second. The year bogan with tho month Nissan,
according to an express direction given by MOSES,
(Exod. xii. 2. and Numbers ix. 1;) but this the
Jews ormaider only the commencement of the
ecclesiastical year, and the month of Tish ri as the
beginning of the civil year.
From C ?AMBE RS Papers for the People, we ex?
tract the following descriptioh :
"The period of Rosh Hashanali is the moat
solemn of the whole year. Scripture and tradition
unite in impressing upon it the character of pro?
found awe. The latter designates it aa the anni?
versary of the croat: on of the universe, and aa the
day when the Supreme Being jndges mankind, and
pronounces their doom for the year to come. It is
therefore a period of repentance, for which a
month's previous preparation ia made by addition?
al prayers, services performed before daybreak,
and the blowing of the shofar. This primitive
musical instrument consists bf a ram's horn clean
nd, smoothed, and made bright by tho known pro?
cesses, having a taper mg shape, and bant like a
hook in the lower part, with a narrow opening at
the top, and a wide one at the bottom. The shrill
sounds to be produced by it have been arranged
into various classes, each of which is designated
bv a special name; and the party appointed to blow
the horn must know these names, so aa to be able
to sound the particular tone reqiiired. Sacred as
this festival is, it is. yet only preparatory to that
celebrated on the tenth "bf the month called the
Day of Atonement Tae whole of the ten days aro
for thiaeeason called the Ten Days of Penitence,
and the holv day? themselves the Days ol Awe.
The rehgioua Jew looks for the advent of that
penod with feelings of-rejoicing, mingled with-un?
common awe and reverence. He prepares him?olf
for the due celebration of these festiVtls by a sam-.
pulou3 self-examiriatloii, by .the endeavor to com?
pensate for aoj wrong he might have indicted; to
obtain the pardon of those he might have offended,
and by fasting and prjuanc? for the purpose of ax
?utting the sins committed. He holds that the
?ay of Atonement Vgpujfea only sins committed
against God. but doe? nqt affect offences commit?
ted against fellow men, unless their pardon be pre?
viously obtained. Touching instances are record?
ed of individnals high ita station, and eminent for
learning, having at the approach of the Davs of

of an opprobrious expression ottered in?the heat ?

Before daybreak a public service is held in the
synagogue, and in the afternoon, before the advent
of the festival of new year, another ia performed
after which the religious bathe. The evening ser?
vice ia not distinguished by any particular feature.
At the evening meal, some raie fruit coming ir!

ie solemn benediction, 'Blessed art thou, O Lord
our God, who hath kept us alive, and preserved us,
and allowed us to attain to this period.' Tho eat?

The morning service begins at daybreak: the
faithful hasten to the synagogue before tasting
food. The devotion wit h which he implores divine
mercy for forgiveness of his sins is most exem
Elary. With his ample prayer-book before him,
e turns his face toward the wall, and -wraps him?
self up so completely ia his scarf, that nothing but
the front part of his face remains uncovered. The
more scrupulously relisions put on the white robe
mentioned above, and those officiating io the ser?
vice always appear fh it.
The most sacred part of the service, as .mention?
ed before, ii the blowing of the shofar. It is the
duty of each adult Israelite to hear its sound, and
no one in good health would venture to break his
fast before his ear has caught the sounds of the
shofar. An awful stillness prevails before thia
part of the service begins, during which every one
PTerpares himself in silence for the act, while a
apedal prayer ia offered up by the partv appointed
to blow the horn. At last the solemn silence is ln

and the summons is obeyed. Thrice the minister

Sunday morning, by Obroner WHrnNO, at Hoi 9
Elizabeth strait, oa.the body of Mary Wilson, a
free person of eolor, what was found dead in her
bad. The verdict of the jury was that the deceased
came to her death by intemperance.
