cause General HALLECK'S orders dates from the
headquarters of the Military District of "Alaska,'*
and not "Walrussia," as bad been suggested by
the philosopher of the Tribu?". This may be con?
sidered a sort of official baptism, bays the Tribune,
and so. it is to be presumed, the new territory
will be called. There is a trilling difficulty in the
way of abbreviation, however, as the first and last
letters are identical with those of Alabama. Yet that
may be avoided by writing "Alas," or, -Alak," either
of which would fitly signify Uncle Sam's feelings
when this heap of rocks and icebergs wa? thrust
into bis pocket.

We hope Mr. METNARDIE will have a pleasant
trip, meet with success in his mission, and return
invigorated in body and in mind, prepared for an
?-ctive winter's campaigu. We k/iow no one who
has labored the long weary summer through more
ardently and less sparing of self than Mr. M.,
and, with his congregation, believe that he is well
entitled to a few weeks' rest from his diurnal aud
hebdomadal labors.
THE JEWISH SYNAGOGUE. -The Wilmington,
(N. C.) Journai says : "We understand that the
Jewish Synagogue in this city will probably be
consecrated on Sunday afterr.-. n next. As the
space is small it is impossible that the public
should be invited to attend. A limited number of
invitations will, however, be issued.
As it will, no doubt, be of great. interest to the
Israelites residing in the different cities and towns
of this State, we are requester1 to announce that
there will be services rn the Syn ogue here during
the ensuing holidays. ..Inch, we aro informed, will
commence Sunday evening next, that being the
beginning ol the Jewish New Year. 1
The Israelites throughout the State are extend?
ed an invitation to attend. Many, no doubt, will
avail themselves of thia privilege, Rev. E. M. MYERS
will officiate during the service.
STUDIA LEGIS. At a meeting of the law students
of Charleston, held on last Thursday evening, the
Forensic Club was organized, the ui.jeet of which
is to encourage research into legal knowledge -
theoretical as well as practical.

The want of* law debating society has long been
felt by that portion of our young :nen who design
pursuing the legal profession, and we take pleas?
ure in announcing the completion of this organiza?
tion. We learn, that many of the law students and
members of the Bar have already joined and many
more design doing so. .The object is worthy of
the serious attention ot all who are engaged in
the cultivation of the legal science, and wo recom?
mend all those W?K? desire to promote the culture
of the law, to attend the next nieetiug, which will
be held at the office of thc British Consulate, in
East Bay street, on next Thursday evening, at 3
o'clock.
It will be remembered by many of the old mem
ben of the Bar that a society of the like character
was formed many years ago, on tho rall of which
we have the names of Hon. W. D. PORTEE, Hon.
A. G. MAGRATH, and many other of the brighter
lights of the Charleston Bar. We hope that
the members of this society will be as successful
ui their profession as those who organized the first
yorensio Club of Charleston.

with or without eggs-in fact, hog meat of any
description; for at that time it was "root lion
or die." Thinking to indulge their appetites
and gladden their hearts by buying one
or two, we stopped, when a 'ot was put np.
We felt our purse, and felt bad, as its con?
tents would not permit so large a purchase,
when the cry w*s fifteen, ?fteen and a half,
sixteen, going, g?ing, gone. But mentioning our
regret to a good friend who had purchased, of our
inability to take a lot, ho proposed we should have
ono at cost price. Home it was seut-consigned
to tho pot, and received at dinner in good condi?
tion; it was found to be of superior quality and
fine flavor. We concluded to call at tho store and
buy a small lot if possible; when to our satisfaction
we were informed that Messrs. MCKAY AS CAMPBELL
have about one'hundred, which they will sell
during this day, one oi more, to families at from
15 to IC cents per pouud. This being Saturday,
and provision must be made for to-morrow; we
would advise all who want a cheap and good din?
