Florida-Marion and Ala.dma Counties.- Crops seriously injure! by rain and caterpillar. Can hardly realize over one-third of a crop. Qaines7ille.-The caterpillar has swept over thia entire section, aud, under the most favorable cir? cumstances, a third of a crop can hardly be made. THK IRREPRESSIBLE CONFLICT ES FLORIDA.-The Savannah News und Herald, of Wednesday, says : By the steamer Liuie Baker, from Florida yester? day morning, we have received particulars of a de? monstration at Fernandina, which was fortunately quelled by the good sense aud judgment of Capt. UBINA, of that steamer, aud the prompt interfer? ence of the military. The brief statement of facts made to us are as follows : On the arrival of the Liuie Baker at Fernandina, ou her trip south, while the crew were busily engaged in discharging the freight consigned to that poiut, under the superintendence of the mate, a strange negro came aboard. The mate inquired his business, and waa told that be had come to see after some bag? gage. He was informed by the officer that it was against the rules of the boat for him to be there; that the baggage and freight would be properly attended to, aud ordered him ashore. The negro started, but remained on the gang plank sulkily, and being-again warned ashore, replied with inso? lent language. Tho mate then introduced to his caudal extremity some shoo leather, which facili? tated his progress to the dock, where ho stood at the bead of the gang plank, apparently master of the situation. A short while alter a colored man, named Lee, appeared on the wharf, demanding to know who it was that kicked the genius aforesaid, aud upon be? ing told that the mate was the resposible party, with many expletives he dared him ashore, swearing that the would make sunlight shine through bun. That officer being busily engaged in his duties on ahipboard, superintending the delivery of freignt, paid no attention to the insulting language of the negro; but his duties calling him upon thc dock . shortly afterward, he wont. A large crowd of ex? cited negroes bad gathered, and while attending to his business one of them approached behind the officer with a drawn knife, and was about to in? flict a blow, when his hand was arrested by a by? stander, who hurried the party off. Captain USXNA immediately gave notice to the agent at that point to have a guard placed upon the dock on the re? turn of tho steamer to Fernandina, and having shipped his frr tpfht, went on his voyage. Upon the return of tne steamer, it was found that Major COLE had anticipated the orders of Col. SPBAOUE, commanding Mhe Department of Florida, and a guard from ih6 revenue steamer in port was on the wharf. The steamer made her usual business stay, and pioceeded thence to this city without further trouble. The colored clement have become very annoying. Hon. YULE'S house was brickbatted, and the general tone o? the colored eletueut ia for Ugh*. REOWIBATIOK.-We have only a report from one precinct of yesterday's registration in the city : First Precinct-Wards Koa. 1 and 2. - Whit'.: , 12; colored, 5. -o QUICK TKIP. -Tho steamer Manon, Capt. T. J. FOSTER, belonging to Capt. JOHN FERGUSON, baa jost arrived from Wright's Bluff, on tho Santee River, touching at tho iuteruiediate points, going and returning in the excellent time of four days and eight hours. j THE CATERPILLAR is THE UP-COITNTRY.- One of our most prominent citizens now farming near Pendleton, S. C., has written to a large firm here within a few days, in which he states that ''the caterpillar ha? been making a clean sweep for me, eating up every green leaf and all the young bolls, J of course my crop will be seriously cu?t**iled." j NEW RIOS.-The New York Journal of (bm h ?i ce, of Monday, has the following paragraph : "We werd shown Saturday, by Messrs. D. TAL MAOE ? Co., a package of uew crop South Carolina paddy. It waa grown near the Cooper River, and is a sample of some 30,000 bushels now ready to be forwarded to market. The <iuality is exoelleut, and the amount of -volunteer grain' small. THE MAILS, we regret to say, are still very irreg? ular. There ia not a week in which, from some cause or other, the Northern mail does uot fail ot?ce or twice. On Wednesday we Lad no mail north of Richmond; yesterday we had nothing from beyoud Wilmington by the Northeastern train, but received the previous day's Northern mail by thf South Carolina Railroad; so that we. | are still one day behind. We devoutly hope that reconstruction may come ere long, and with it the cessation of these inconveniences. We often won? der whether in Kansas, too, where they have female suffrage, they tolerate such mail irregulari? ties. THE FIRE YESTERDAY.-About half-past twelve o'clock yesterday the engines were brought out by the alarm bell giving notice that there was a fire in the Eighth Ward. It waa at the northwest corner of Camion and President streets, in the house occup e ! by Mr. MORRIS ALDRICH, and owned by Mr. J. LUDEN. The fire broke out up? stairs, where the family occupants reside. The roof was damaged perhaps to the amount of about $75, and the furniture slightly injursd. There is $1000 insurance on the house in the Carolina Mu? tual Insurance Company of this city. While the Marion Steam Fire Company was en? gaged in putting the above fire out, the sparks from her chimney set tire to the roof of tho house near where she was stationed. Fortunately it was discovered, and put out with little trouble or loss. -o CHARLESTONIANS IN THE WEST.-A friend hand? ed us the "Aunzeiqer des Sudeus," a German paper published in Memphis, in which we tin J a para? graph we believe of sufficient interest to our read? ers to induce us to translate it into English. '.Yellow Fever on the Levee.-On Sunday morn? ing, the 8th inst., the Mohawk, from New Orleans, came to the Levee (at Memphis) with seven yellow fever patients. Oue of the passengers died of this disease while the vessel lay at anchor. Nearly all the sailors (or hands ) were sich. As soon as the Mayor heard of it, he went down to the boat and told the captain that he could not bo permitted to land Dr. Imr, of Charleston, who has had much experience in the treatment of yellow fever patients, offered to accompany the boat on its way to St. Louis, and after be had secured the neces? sary medicines, he went up the river in the boat. At Columbus, Ey., the doctor left the boat, and arrived here day beforo yesterday. He says that on the voyage up tho river only one more passen? ger died, and four tock the fever." We take sincere pleasure in recording an act of heroism like the above. Dr. LEBBY, above men? tioned, was well known to us during the war, most of tho time being stationed in Virginia, where at different times ho held positions of honor and responsibility. He is a son of our esteemed fellow citizen, Dr. R. LEBBY. -o CHEAP BED BLANKETS.-At 287 Ring street, until the 1st of October, we will offer twenty-five pairs super bed blankets (a little soiled) at greatly re? duced prices.
