CABINET ORGANS.- Those beautiful instruments,
6ayB tho Cleveland JJaiiy Leader, which have be?
come so popular with the musical public, are made
only by MASON ? HAMLIN, and are far superior to
.ny other instrument in the world. They are ali
excellent parlor instruments, and the low price at
which they are sold brines them within the reach
of all.
-o
SERENADE.-We were very agreeably interrupted
in our labors last evening by the sweet strains of
music, which the kindness of the members of j
Richardson's band favored us with. The music
was really good, and we hope that it will not be the
last time that we shall bs so favored, lt Baccio
was given with erne artistic touch, and its en?
livening notes haunted m with nleesing sound
imagery during the remainder of the night.
AN UNWELCOME PBKSKNT.-On Thursday night a
colored man named Lim us Allston while passing
up Rutledge street, saw a whit? bundle on the
steps of Dr, Oona's residence at the corner of Bull
and Rutledge. He stirred tho object with a stick,
but was surprised to hear an infant cry. On ex?
amination the buudlo proved to bc a white infant
a few days old. The child was neatly dressed
and jwas evidently exposed intentionally. The
colored man called the attention of the police to
the fret, and tho child was taken to the residence
of Dr, Frron in Beaufain street, near Pitt, where
a colored woman took charge of it until morning.
It has since been turned over to the Municipal au?
thorities, who in thoir character of City Fathers
are expected to ?dopt such waifs of humanity as
may be thrown upon their charity.
AN EQUINOCTIAL DRINK.-At the present time,
when persons are vainly endeavoring to preserve
their equanimity by keeping on the shady side of
the street and under an.umbrella, we -tale pleas?
ure in directing the sweltering public to the soda
water stand in Hasel street, in the roar of tho Pa?
vilion Hotel. Soda water is one ct' the most
healthy and invigorating drinks known; it is an
anti-fogmatir, answers admirably as an eye?
opener, and exhilarates without intoxicating.
There are few perapns who have not heard of j
BUCK'S soda water. W'nen drawn from the marble
fountains and tempered with the syrup it is in?
comparable.. That dispensed at the Hasel street
stand ls of this character, and its virtues are so
well known that Pie fe un tain is hourly surrounded
by thirsty mortals, wao patiently wait for the in
rigorafing draught. .
Tm AUTUMNAL EQUINOX.-About the 21st of
September, the ecliptic, or great circle which the
?un appears to describe in the heavens in the
course of the year, eroses the terrestrial equator
The point ot intersection is called the equinoctial
point, or the jquinox, because at that period, from
its position in relation to the sun, the earth, as it
revolves on its axis, has exactly one-half of its
surface illumined by the sun's rays, while the
other half remains in darkness, producing the
phenomenon of equal day and night all over the
world. These periods aro termed, from the sea?
sons) in which they occur, the autumnal sod vernal
equinox. At this time the snn rises about six
o'clock in the morning and sets nearly the same
time in tho evening. In the autumnal equinox the
sun is passing from north to south, and conse
qnenily from this pariod the days in tho Northern
Hemisphere gradually shorten until tho 21st of
December, the winter solstice is reached, from
which season they* gradually lengthen to the
spring or vernal equinox, on the 21st of March
when day and night are again equal.
As ie well known, both the autumnal and vernal
equinoxes axe distinguished over the world by the
storms that prevail at these seasons. The origin
of such atmospheric commotions has never been
very satisfactorily explained, but is supposed to
arias from the united tidal action of the sun and
moon ou the atmosphere; an action which at the
time of the equinoxes is exerted with greater
force then at any other period of the year.
THK WHOLESALE TRADE,tThe present condition
of Hayne and Meeting streets is n. proof that there
is not only "life in theold land yet," but an abund?
ance of energy that will soon restore her formor
commercial status. Since the first qf tho month tho
merchants from the interior have visited the city
in numbers, and the boxes turned out before the
several doors prove that their visits were not made
in vain. The hotels have shaken off the lethargy
of the summer, and are now scenes of bustling
life, the rotunda? being crowded with purchasers
and drummers who are desirous of securing a CUB
tom er for the houses they represent. The Charles
ton Hotel has long been tho favorite of the coun?
try merchants, as it? location is central and they
can obtain easy ncc ess to the great thoroughfares
of business; its wide verandas and spacious lobby
are, during the business season, crowded with
guests, and it needs but u glance to assure the
paster that the fall trade has commenced.
There are now in the city betweeu thirty and
forty merchants from different sections of the
country who are engaged in laying in their Fall
and Winter supplies. There is, of course, consider?
able competition between the drummers, to sec ure
this trade, but from appearances, it is equally
divided, each establishment exhibiting the same
Business activity. The large dry goods, shoe, hat,
clothing, fancy gooda, and crockery houses in the
neighborhood of the Charleston Hotel, arc all
patroni-cd by the country visitors, and the lights
gleaming on the streets at night, show that the
day'; vork has not been completed, while the
numerous boxes turned out iu tho morning, are
cheering signs. It would he impossible to individ?
ualize any one store, as the parties, who, one
morning have tho side walk crowded with cases of
gooda, may be the next day eclipsed by their
neighbors. Competition is the life of trade, and
though each merchtut uses laudable efforts to
secure a large proportion, it appears to be pretty
equally divided. The trade has, however, just
commenced, and it is the opinion of those who are
posted, that a? soon.as the coru and cotton crops
are fully gathered an 1 sent to market, that there
will be a perfect influx of merchants, who will test
the capacity of the Charleston market to its utmost.
We have before retened to the wholesale
houser of Charleston, biu . recent inspection of
their stocks enable us tc stato confidently that
they are fully able to accommodate thoir custom?
ers in quantity, quality and price, evon if the trade
.mould assume its ante bellum proportions, and
merchants from the Traus-Mi6siS8ippi Depart?
ment visit this market. Several parties who have
peen in the habit of purchasing at this market
went to New York at the early part of the season,
but. on thar return while passing through this
place, stetted that i^wss (olly for a" merchant
with compVratively small" means to buy in-New
York as goods could be obtained in Charleston at
the same prices and the expanses of transporta?
tion be much less. This has been the experience
of a few, but wo are gratified to state that
lYnxo the present appearances but a few have
proved thus derelict to their first love. The ma?
jority of the old customers of Charleston are de?
termined to continue their purchases at this mar-.
ket, feeliw M?ured Chat, in the long run, if they

THE LITTLE GIANT,
THE BEST, MOST COMPLETE AND CHEAPEST
HORSE POWER MANUFACTURED.
In introducing this new Power into tho maiket, we
would state that the following are some of the advan?
tages possessed by tbe . LITTLE GIANT" over all other
Horse powers :
1. Tts (Teat strength on account ot being double-geared,
which not only doubles the streugtb by dividing the
?train on twice tho number of teeth, bnt hy gearing on
both aides of the wheel? it equalizes the wear on the
shafts, and materially lessens the friction, enabling the
horses to do ranch more work than with any other
Power
2. Its compactness and extreme portability, it weighing
about one-half a* much as other Horse Power?, and occu?
pying bnt one-third thc space, lt can be packed in small
boxes, thus saving nindi expense. It n so simple that
the moat ignora ut persou would have no difficulty in
putting it together.
a. Thc facility with* which it can be adjusted to any
kind of machinery at any angle, either on the ground or
over head, without moving it from Its foundation, will
be appreciated by farmer* and plantera as specially adapt?
ed for driving Cotton Gins.
