THE CHIFFOSTER.
BY W. W. s.
I am a-poor Chiffonier !
I neck what others cast away ! ~
In refuse heaps the world throws by, ~
Despised of man, my trade I ply ;
And oft I rake them o'er and o>r,
- Aud fragments broken, stained, and toro,
I gather up, and make my store
Of things that dogs and beggars scorn.
1 am the poor Chiffonle !
You see me in the dead of night
Peering along with pick and light.
And while the world in darkness sleeps
Waking to rake its refuse heaps;
I scare the dogs that round them prowl.
And light amid tho rubbish throw;
For precious things are hid bv foul,
Where lea.it wo heed and bast we know.
I am the poor Chiffonier 1
Ko wretched sud rejected pde.
No tinted mound oi offal vile.
No drain or guttir I despise.
For there may He tho richest prize;
And oft amid the Utter thrown
A silver cc4n-a golden ring,
Which boldeth still its precious stone.
Some happy chance to me miy bring.
I am the poor Chiffonier!
Thees tattered rage, so soiled and frayed,
Were in a loom of wonder made.
And beautiful and free from shame.
When from the master's hand they came.
The reckless world that threw them off
Now heeds them only to despise;
Yet, ah I despite its jeer and scoff.
What virtue still within them Hos 1
I am the poor Chiffonier I
Yes t all these ahrods so spoiled and torn.
These rained rags yon pas- tn scorn,
This refuse by the highway tost,
I seek tl-.at they may not bo lost ;
And, cleansed fro ai tUtb thal on them lies,
And purified and purged from stain.
Renewed in beauty they shall rise
To wear a spotless form agtdr.

BOSTON BOOT AND SHOE MAHKXT-For the wonk end?
ing September 13-The demand for Boots and .shoes bas
been brisk during the psst week. The Western jobbing
bouses are selUng a great miny goods to retailers, \\ ho
appear to feel confident of .a good trade at home, on ac?
count of the promising suite of the crops. Tho New Eng?
land trade is commencing to stir up, and buyers, while
oomplsixting et the high price?, are taking about t tn- nm
si quantity of goods. The only noticeable, teat tue in the
market is the heavy demand for Brogans at this time of
year, caused by thu south buying more shoes of this kind
than was expected. The stock of first qualitv is very
small, and dealers ail o.ners with great difficult)*. Thc
So otu are not jet buying many fine goods, but it is hoped
that tn tb* course of a year they wid bo enabled to work
off a higher class ol goods than heretofore.
At present it ls best they should buy what they eau
I pay for rather than cripple themselves and injure their
credit by purchasing goods beyond their means. The
\ manufacturers, while readily disposing of the goods they
oavs made, are cautious about making ahead of orders,
and buy a tock only as they ueed. ' This will prevent an
overstock at tho close of the season. The leither mar?
keta are quite dull, but prices are firm. In the principal
hide marketa.no movement of any import*n e. For
California the demand continues moderate. No ship?
ments from ???- port tho past neck, but from New York
124 esses have been forwarded. The quantity cleared at
the Custom House has been as follows:
