PERSONAL.-We had the pleasure of a hearty
shake of the hand yesterday in our sanctum from
the well known enterprising young Banker and
Broker, ANDREW M. MORELAND, Esq., of No. 8
Broad street, who has just returned from a recrea?
tion trip North. Mr. MORELAND informs us that
he ha? induced Northern capitalists to invest their
capital in Southern securities, and has made
arrangement? by which our people may negotiate
loans upon Southern securities at reasonable
rates.
Parties having Southern securities of any kind
for sale will find it to their advantage to call and
consult with Mr. MORELAND, Banker, No. 8 Broad
atreet.
DUR TEA'S STARCH ANTJ MAIZENA.-Few inven?
tions have acquired more notoriety than DUR YEA'S
starch. Since it was finit presented to the public
it ha? gradually grown in favor, and is now con?
sidered an indispensables necessity by every house?
keeper. This starch is prepared by the Glen Cove
Manufacturing Company, and is admirably adapt?
ed for stiffening fine linens, laces-, etc. Mr. T. S.
KING is the agent for this starch and maizena,
and ha? opened an office at No. 189 East Bay, in
the store of Mr. B. O NELL. We have been made
the recipients of a package of the starch and mai?
zena, and can confidently recommend them to the
public as superior articles. Mr. KING is prepare d

BEOPENTNU OF SCHOOLS. Thc first of October
closes tho Fall vacation, and commences the
scholastic term for tho Winter. A reference to out?
advertising columns, wdl show a number of insti?
tutions of learning in this city, that will resume
their duties on this day. Charleston ia fortunate
in possessing so large-? number of schools and
seminaries where the youthful idea is trained by
minds stored with every useful knowledge. Among
the schools that will reopen on.the 1st proximo, is
that conducted by Mrs. JOHN A. BLUM, in Mary .
street, opposite Elizabeth. Tho situation is picas- '
ant, and the advantages offered ttie pupil are fully
equal to those of similar establishments. Mrs.
BLUM is an experienced teacher, and is assisted by
? competent corps of instructors.

BASE BALLING.-The. rage for base ball has at
length seized upon the African mind, and th
yoong ebons have it now heavy on the brain. In
the unfrequented street? small clubs of juvenile
darkies assemble, and, with extemporized bats,
formed from shingles and pieces of boards, they
bang the ball about with an ntter disregard to its
incomings ?md outgoings. A few days since we
were leisurely pursuing the even tenor of our way,
when we vere surprised at the appearance of a
ball which wa? skimming its way toward our left
optic. With great presence of mind, we threw up
.ur arm, caught it on the fly, and warded off the
intruder; but being an outsider, and ignorant of
the mles of the game, we did not change our
base, but simply bawled at the players. For the
safety of those persons who wish to preserve
ahemsel ves from bodily harm, and who ha fe no
desire to become balhsts, we would suggest
that the police be directed to act a? umpires,
and to declare *he street performances of the ju?
venile Africans ? foul play, subjecting the culprits
to be put in prisoner's base, there to remain until
lesson is learned that the streets ware never
intended as a play ground.
A DrjTTJtGUXSHXD VISITOR. - Oar friends and
neighbors, Messrs. H. H. BADENHOP & Co., have
received recently from the far West a noble sped
men of the Ursa Major. He is evidently one of
the aborigines, but possesses the happy faculty of
making himself at home under any-circumstances,
and is now thoroughly domioiled with Messrs
BADENHOP & Co. A pole has been erected lu their
yard, upon which Bruin exercises his gymnastio
powers and shows by the closeness of his hng
what strength exists ia his embrace. Fortunately
he is a civilized animal and ha? received the bone
fit of ? thorough education and is not disposed
to carry bis politeness to such extremes as
hagging his visitors. His trip from his
native soil hs? not affected his health; for though
only sixteen months old he is large and well de
developed, and in a wild state would prove sn
ugly customer. Ha rejoices in the name of Coffee,
probably on account of his black hide, and, like
many two-footed Coffees, likes to take a d op or
two. When this rare privilege is accorded him he
will seat himself with great gravity on his hind
legs, and, taking the bottle between his fore-paws,
empty the .contents down his throat. (Toffee is,
perhaps, the largest specimen of the black bear
that has ever been exhibited in Charleston, and is
far more tractable and docile than those seen in
travelling menageries. He is well worth a visit,
and we advise those who aie interested in zoology
to pay birr) & morning call at Messrs. H. H. BA?

THE CHARLESTON CBTFFQXTEBS. -The chiffon?
iers belong to the grand family of scavengers,
but are merely an humble branch as they pursue
their calling on foot, and toil early and late while
coUecting the rubbish thrown into the streets from
the different houses. In Charleston this business
has been conducted principally by old colored
women whose implements of trado were a huge
canvass bag and a piece of bent h on hoop, with
which they scratch the piles of dirt and refuse
matter before the scavenger's cart has made its
appearance. Many or these charac'tern are vete?
rans in the business, and have Rom lung service
become bent almost double; but they are still in?
defatigable, and tho early riser can seo them nt
their daily toil beforo sunrise. Nothing ia loo
mean for their clutches but bone?; iron and rags
are invaluable prizes that are instantly seized, and
during the day taken to sumo ot the numerous
junk shops in the city and sold for a few cents.
The citizen? of Charleston are too pur-' io throw
many valuables into tho street, and the chiffon?
ier toils for months, aud oven years, before tlreit
eearch is rewarded with the sight of any prue of
more importai co than old iron. No golden dust?
men bave ever been known in this city, and the
calling present s no attractions, to any except those
negroes tiho> are too decr?pid to engage in any
business, and who can make a few cents by crawl?
ing round the streets and collecting the trash and
garbage.
It is a difficult matter ior half of the-world to tell
how the ocher half exists, and tho chiffonier be?
longs to that class that Jaake their living while the
rest of the world is asleep. They are tho night
birds whose home is on the street, and who cou
sider all arri?les found ou that domain as their
property. As a class they are incidental to e very
large citv, but are generally quiet and weU behav*
ed; they flit about like evil spirits, but are one of
the necessary features of city life, and are never
molested in their groyelling pursuits.

won for itself an enviabloname among the interior
papers of the Stat*. The Press is published in a
ricli section of country, aud in our opinion, offers

merchants. Mr. LUCAS is staying at tho Mills
Ilouae, and will remain hero a few dare longor.

store tue equanimity and make the physical man
equal to the burdens of the day than a slight re?
fection about noon. This is so well known that a
rush is made to the different restaurants, where
refreshments are provided for the weary between
tho hours of eleven and one. Since the mandate
from headquarters, but few of these restaurants
have beou licensed, and it is only in certain locali?
ties that a ft oe lunch aud its concomitant, a good I
drink, can be obtained. Tho City Square Saloon is-,j
one of those pleasant resting places, and the
weary, dusty, foot-sore pedestrian, can there find
rest for his feet, and the choicest delicacies of the
market to tempt the palate. Messrs. WULBEBN
&. STELLING, the proprietors of thia saloon, ha^o
spared no pains to please their numerous guests,
and have always on hand a choioe suppl}' of j
liquors, which are, by a few magioal touches,
transformed into various fancy and fascinating
drinks. Their lunch is a spread consisting of J
every delicacy of tho season, prepared in a fault?
less style; and those who pay them one visit need
no inducements to make them repeat.

a great reputation for the excellence and durabiH
ty of their workmanship, and they allow no instru?
ment to go our of their factory which', through
any defect, would bo likely to injure thc "good re?
port" of them which now everywhere prevails.
They take equal pains with their small and their
large organs. All of them are warranted, and are
perfectly reliable. The variety and beauty of the
effects which can be produced with same of the
large instruments are truly surprising, and can be
properly understood and appreciated only by such
intell-gent persons as have heard these organs
fully and effectually displayed.

rtE PHILADELPHIA UNTVEBSITY OF MEDICINE
AND SURGERY was organised in 1848. Chartered
by the Legislature, February 28.1853. Name changed
by a legislative enactment to the Eclectic Jhedical Col?
lege, of Philadelphia, in 18C0. In 1863 it purchased the
Pennsylvania Medical College, established in 1842, am)
the Philadelphia Medical College, which bad previously
been merged into the Pennsylvania Medical College. In
1884 it purchased the Penn Medical University. The
Trustees of the separate schools united, petitioned and
obtained a special Act of the Legislature, consolidating
these institutions and cha. ging then-names to that of the
Philadelphia University of Medicine and Surgery,
March ld, 1865. All these various Acts are pnbH hod in
the statutes of Pennsylvania. The cost of the > uUding
and museum was ovor one hundred thousand dollars. It
will be observed that the University, as now organized, is
the legal representative of tho four Medical Colleges that
lt has absorbed. It is a bb eral school of medicine.- con?
fined to no dogma, nor attached to any medical clique
but embraces In lt? teaching everything of value to th"
profession.
Sessions.-It has two lull sessions each year, commenc?
ing on the 1st of October, and continuing until the 1st of
January, as its first session, and from the 1st of January
to the 1st of April, as its second; the two constituting one
full coarse of lectures. It has also a summer session,
commencing the 1st April and continuing until August,
for the preparatory branches, such as Latin., Greek,
Mathematics, Botany, Zoology, Chemistry, Anatomy
Physiology, etc ,
Tickets. - Ticke ts to the full course of lectures $120, or
$60 for each session. For the summer or preparatory
course $25. Graudadng fee $30. To aid young men of
moderate means, the University has issuedflve hundred
scholarships, which are sold to first-course students for
$76, and to secoad-conrse students and clergymen for
$50, etch constituting the holder a Ufe member, with the
perpetual privilege* of the lectures, and all the teachings
of th? school. The only additional fees ar? a yearly dis?
secting and ma trio ula ting ticket, each of which ls $5.
The Advantages <>f Scholarships.- Tho student holding a
scholarship can enter the College at any time during the
year, attend aa long as he chooses, and re-enter the Jns?i
tu ti on as frequently as de.! re?.
It requires no previous reading or study to enter the
University on scholarships, hence, all private tuition fees
are saved.
Students, by holding scholarship's, can prosecute other
business a part of the time.
The candidate for graduation can present bimsen' at
any time, and receive his degree ssaoon as qualified'.
. -4in cases stuoent should hold a scholarship and not be
able to attend lectures, it can be transferred to another,
thus preventing any loss.
Parents, guardians or friends of students wishing to
xeuvna&e scholarship for them a year or more before
.Heir attendance at the University, con secure them by
advancing one-half the price and paying the balance
when the student enters. Physicians and benevolent
men can bestow great benefit upon poor young 'men by
presenting them a scholarship, and thus enabling them
to obtain an honorable profession.
The Faculty embraces BOT en teen eminent physicians
and surgeons. The University has associate with ita
large hospital clinic, where every form of medical and
surgical disease is operated on and treated in the pres?
ence of the class. '" |
COLLIDE BUILDDTO.-The College bu?di?g, located In
Ninth street, south of Walnut, is the finest ?n the city.
Its front is collegiate gothic, ana bi .adorned with no
battlements and embrasures, presenting' a novel, bold,
and beautiful appearance. The facade h of brown atone,
ornamented by two towers, rising to the elevation of
eighty feeti and crowned with an embattled parap?t.
The building contains between fifty and atxty rooms, all
supplied with water, gas, and. every other convenience
that modern improvement can contribute to facilitate
medical instruction. Only five hundred scholarships
will be Issued, and as two hundred and fifty are now
sold, those who wish to secure una should do so at once.
Money can be remitted by expresa, or a draft or check
sent on any National Bank in the. United Slates, when
